Joe, great trip. We were just 24 hours too early on Sunday. ;)
I've been on the Dynafit TLT for years and I think they are great. With the lighter bindings, you'll be a great trail breaker for us senior citizens. :)

Thanks for the report! How was the Pamelia Lk. trail after last Novembers flood? It seems like most of the damage occured between the TH and the lake. Is that the case?
I think you must have skied some other chute, since there were no tracks (ski or boot) in or at the bottom of Nisqually chutes when we came down around 2pm'ish. ???
There was a boot pack we crossed, coming down from somewhere near Alta Vista... I think maybe people go out on the Nisqually for crevasse practise...

Why in the world were there so many boot tracks and snowshoe tracks at the base of the chutes running along the moraine? Confused the hell out of us....maybe it's a popular snowshoe trip?
Good News, the pollen problem at Pilchuck washed away with the snow during all the rain yesterday!
Yep, that was likely me. I said hello and wished you luck on your climb. I also added that I hoped the weather would improve for you. Too bad you carried all of that gear up. I did the same earlier this year 'cept it was with 5 days gear :(

IMHO, it is NOT worth touring outside the ski area of Crystal until the snow pack consolidates.
Unless they get 4 to 10 inches of new snow!
I went back the next day to Zap's land of Goo and it turned out to be quite good.
There were variable snow depths depending on wind transport and the low clouds moved in and out, good visibility, nothing got to hot yet...bu...
I was also up there Sunday. Planned on going up to Muir overnite and skiing the Beehive down to the major icefall on the Cowlitz today....but word of worsening weather lead us to call it at Anvil. Basically skinnned up to Anvil for a daytrip with overnite and glacier gear....oh well, good conditioning. Vis was non existant aroud 8500-9000 ft. Skiing was ok except for the vis. Pretty sure we were passed up by Jason H. and his crew around Pebble Creek and followed their skin track to the right of...
After Saturday's pollen fest on Goat Mountain I wiped the ski bases with alcohol, scrubbed the plush with dishwashing soap and a vegetable brush, ironed the glue-side of the skins through paper bag strips to lift off the top layer of contaminated glue, and then reglued with Gold Seal.
I'm ready for tomorrow!

I was up there on sunday as well. Yeah... that drive home yesterday was horrible!!! But well worth it.
A group of us skied the upper chutes (at 8300 ft) yesterday. We also had great snow above the chutes and wonderful skiing down into the chutes. Well worth the miasma and the drive.
Howdy. I emailed you direct, but then just saw this post. I'd recommend camping at Corrigan if you're feeling at all social. Should be a fine assortment of folks, with a number of us arriving Saturday. I prefer to ski the main steep bowl on the northern aspect, though this requires a pretty long traverse back around to Corrigan, or another climb up. There really are no bad aspects on Diamond right now until more melting happens. The scrambles up the...
Congrats on your year, Lee. It is really useful to have you topoint at when discussing, with the family, whether or not two hut trips per year is excessive! ;D
All the hikers up there this year is the problem !
Here in Zion the late-season snow surface crap is mostly desert dust, and molybdenum wax works surprisingly good for that. I've never tried it on pollen, but from the reports on here I might have that opportunity when I sample some Cascade corn next month.
Also this time of year I noticed that the skin glue can get warm & gooey and sticks to the ski base. I think it can start a chain reaction and even a little residue can collect more and more pollen slime the mor...

No specifics at this point. And there's no guarantee that we won't end up on the cutting room floor. Assuming that the show does air later in the summer, I expect to hear about it beforehand, and I'll post a note on TAY with the date and time.
Wickstad- The ski/walk up the road to the Schrieber Meadows TH was an hour for me. There are plenty of long dry stretches that could be driven. I stopped at the temporary sign posted by the F.S. that threatened the motorist who would proceed with a heavy fine.
I would say that you could skin non stop from 1/2 mile or more before the TH.
I took the Railroad approach but camped on the ridge just east of the RR.

I just did the bare stories but haven't put in any of the details yet zap. I got sidetracked this weekend by getting 15cms new up Duffy lake road.
Toby - i got a ton of trips in this year. Hope to continue the streak next year.

wow, it's great to hear that the producers of this program are approaching this subject seemingly unbiased. i'm interested in seeing this report when it airs this summer--any info on the specifics?
I picked up some pollen on Saturday at Stevens - rubbing alcohol took it right off as advertised. I'd never have dreamed that pollen would convert to such tarry stuff.
Nice work on the Fuhrer Thumb Sky - great job! Waiting on the weather to go finish the Finger.

I've never noticed a problem with pollen messing up the plush side of the skins. It seems like it could leave some residue and reduce your glide, but I've never noticed it.
On the other hand, after you have skied for a while with your skins off, the pollen can gum up your bases to the point where your skins...
Nice work man... Appears you dont mess around.

Does the pollen problem effect the skins?
my bases had a good coat on them but nothing on my skins. however, i booted the first half (the half in the trees). maybe that is why it didn't get on the skins??
I have a question about the pollen. I havn't came across this problem myself but it sounds like its no fun at all. Anyway my question is... Does the pollen problem effect the skins? Im assuming it doesnt or it would have been mention but thought I'd ask.
An awesome day! To sum it up in short: ;D
Thanks for taking me along and introducing me to Rainier skiing. I hope to have many more turns with all of you.

Hey guys,
How far is it from the car-camping to some of the main features or the closest summit? Are many of the features "generic" or is there better terrain than others there? Is it set up like a crater like cirque with skiing on the inside and outside...or...???
Where are ya'll comming from? Were here in Cornvalli'

Amar & I just encountered the worst-case I've ever experienced. It was on the S. side of Baker. Interestingly, our ski Thurs. evening out of camp presented no problems. However, on the descent yesterday, it began on the lower Easton Gl. Whatever you do, don't apply wax over the pollen. We tried that and back at the car, it had created almost a black tar type of coating on my skis.
Art, you animal. ;) I'm pleased to see that you returned intact, again. I was concerned that if I joined you and Jeff that I would have violated one of my major rules about walking on dirt to get to skiable terrain.

Am I seeing the USFS 21 south many miles past the reservoir to the 2149 at Pioneer Gulch to Scout Creekish????
Any more specifics would be great!
Yup. That be it. The main road is paved. The turn off the main road is just past Indigo Springs Campground and it is signed (Pioneer Gu...
The comment about wax and pollen is interesting. I waxed my skis before my recent trip to Mt Baker and it's possible (a little hard to tell looking at the skis) that the pollen did stick more readily to the waxed base. I'm making this judgment by looking at the tip and tail, where my hasty wax job didn't cover well. It would be interesting to test this directly, say by waxing one ski and not waxing the other.
It would also be interesting to get a better handle on when t...

Chrism,
Where were you skiing? Another report from last week at Baker said it was bad up there too.

Margaritas, yum yum. I'll have to be on the lookout for geezers next time I'm up there.
Should we stumble across you before they're consumed, we'll be delighted to share ;)

Note: BobDylan, Tom Petty, George Harrison, ....... ..........., and Jeff Lynn from old 10CC. I think?
....... ..............., = Roy Orbison :)
Them dudes cranked out some rockin' tunes. Too bad the lost Roy Orbison when they did or they'd of likely cranked out a bunch more.

We also skied last night, but none in our party of 3 ran into the pollen slow-down problem. I wonder if our lack of waxing for most of the season helped out?? I thought the skiing was fine.
I would not be surprised if you don't have something there. I felt like the end of our last trip skiing wise was better than the beginning (skis were fresh...
Nice Job, y'all.
And Very sweet viddy, Dan/Jer. You guys may be ready for the big time; Miller better look over his shoulder ;)
At first I was calling BS on Merk... but now I think he's right. I think Tom Petty was one of the Traveling Wilburys. He's also right that it was a perfect tune for that spot in the viddy... great mood control.

Way too cool.
The last time I was on that bridge there was a couple there with their child and dog. The man was on our side, and the dog, wife and child were on the other. He tried to call the dog over the bridge, but the dog tried to swim the creek. I thought I was going to see the death of a nice animal, but somehow the dog figured out there was no way he could swim across, turned around and about 50 yards downstream made it back to the original bank from which he...

Thanks for the heads up. We're going up tomorrow anyway. There is already pollen on our skis from our last trip East of the mountains. I'll bring the rubbing alchohol. I've found a brush sometimes can help as well.
Lisa. It is funny that Scott would assume you ascended via Heliotrope Ridge route because you never mentioned which route you took in you TR. I was trying to figure it out and maybe could have because I think I have a picture of the feature in your first posted picture from the other side that I took from the Squock Glacier.

Nice effort, Lisa.
I've experienced that "windchime crust" twice over the years, both times on Rainier. It was a very special experience with creamy smooth, musical skiing both times. Fun, eh?
I'm glad someone else got to enjoy it.

Nice one J, looks like everyone had a great time.
Wow Lee, how many heli hut trips is that this year? A month and a halfs worth? Good on you, I'm jealous!
Scotteryx- I went up the Easton, no info on the saddle if it's the one I'm thinking of on the Coleman/Deming.
Margaritas, yum yum. I'll have to be on the lookout for geezers next time I'm up there. Christophe and I had a nice day-trip outta Paradise on Sunday, too.
