Damn, conditions looked sweet up there for late August!
Jason, Jason, Jason....walked down? This coming from a guy who skied HUGE ICY RUNNELS on the Mt. FURY? ;)

I think those recent series of storms loaded the roman wall with several feet of new snow, I would have thought that the wind would have loaded the park headwall since the winds usually come from the west?, and there was a small new cornice, but nothing but ice deceptively covered with thin snow below, im glad I brought both axes for scopeing the conditions.
Nice to see you had good snow, better hope for me if I head up there this september. I was up a few weeks ago on the Easton and did a late day summit (around 8 or 9pm) and tried to ski down, only to find the snow in very poor condition. I walked...down....a first for me, but better safe than sorry. I still had a few thousand feet of good skiing up high and down low. It looks like we may get some more snow up there this coming week.
Cool....we walked out to the scholes yesterday and I was looking at the headwall wondering. From what I saw I'd say you made a good choice
You got it sista! The Bettys are a hoot.
Yup, never a dull moment, eh? He's pretty eager to go to the light (i.e. take up telemark skiing) if he can find folks who'll go with him.

I just have to post my favorite pebble creek pic of my pal choosing not to schlep his skis over the scree to the pebble patch last July.
Here's the rest of the Pebble Patch photos from last Saturday.

That third pic is crying out to be a telemarktips cover shot. Oughta submit that if you have not already.
I have written a note to the park rangers in one case, indicating that I forgot my pass at home. They never replied.
Thanks for the fantastic pics!!!!!!!!!
Stellar late August turns. We'll have to find a smaller patch for September; the 'joy-o-meter' score was much too high from lapping the patches (broke the single digit barrier) :) :
Joy-o-meter score:
vert. ft skied / vert. ft hiked = ~200 ft/~2,000 ft X 100 = 10%
I'll try to get some more photos posted later, but here's a couple pics for now:

Very Nice work! Sweet turns at the end of August, this place rocks!
The suncups we saw weren't very big for August, but I'm pretty sure most of that schmoove snow was fast-track MF metamorphism from last Sunday/Monday's snow.
Notice the mammoth crown on the NE Face in my dessert photo. I'm also attributing that to last week's cycle. The debris pile on the Weart Glacier was big, covering a significant width on a couple crevasses.

Way to knock out those August turns and have fun doing it :D.
Thanks for having me along guys. I had a great time and look forward to our return next year for a followup jump turn, cornice creek hopping and wand bashing clinic. This is the first tele-trip where my sides hurt more than my thighs from laughing so hard.
Here is my picture contribution:

And, Chris, you may remove the aster ix from your August turns record.

man that snow looks nice! amazing that its stayed so wonderfully un-suncupped all the way through summer.
Wow, sounds like an incredible discovery. Love to see pictures and your future tr of this area!!!!!!!!!!!
sounds like great trip- glad it worked out for you guys. pics?
Way to keep the streak going Jer ;D, I bet the goat took the picture ;). Glad you were able to find that "oasis" of good snow 8).

Not many have figured out how to get a still shot of themselves skiing on a solo trip, Jer.
Picture taken by God I'm sure, either that or Santa Claus. They both know all, right?
Thanks for the update Jerry. :D

Looks like you broke the code. This may very well be another first for the Jerman.
Can't wait to see the video ;)
Your post on the solo travel thread should be interesting, too :)

I was up on the Muir snowfield Sat Aug 18. Started partly sunny, then a later in day brought lite snow/freezing rain mix and rain lower down. As you gain elevation (skin up) from Pebble Creek, the suncup'ing gets worst, most nasty up above 9000'. My suggestion would be to find some boot tracks to skin up, staying on the tracks really made for a suprisingly quick ascent up to Muir. Coming down another matter, snow was hard & suncap'd up high, much like h...
Freshies in August---yowza! That photo looks like one time we did Muir In January, when blown pow filled in the hollows formed by waves of solid ice. That was 1000'+ of tele for the left turns, and grueling stem turns to the right. "Challenging but fun" can be had at any time of year....
For folks like me who were hoping to see a TR rather than a link, here's the useful info copy-and-pasted:
Run 1: I descended the glacier with an audience of onlooking hikers to a small glacial lake with an incredible view. The snow was too suncupped to be all that enjoyable, but the glacier water made it all worthwhile. Began again to downclimb.
Elevation: ~660'
Run 2: Found another stretch of snow to ski, this one was...
The headwall itself at least to/from top might be out, because there was a stripe of brown all across it, at perhaps 100-200vf under the top. Dirt or something poking through the ice/snow. Even if you could pick through, would probably introduce the risk of pieces of it melting out and falling on you. (Sorry the one pix I have is real lame, camera batteries went dead before I was at good vantage. Maybe see http://www.lumenation.com/trip/ptarmigan-ridge - not sure what date these really are becau...
Nice trip into rarely-worked-in-the-summer terrain! And, a great set of tracks, I'm sure!!
Who wrote the ticket? And what was the violation? If it was for the "Not Having A Trail Head Pass", I have found it effective to write to the Fed's and ask for a court date. I'm still waiting for my court date from 4 years ago! Otherwise, I would write to the agency issuing the ticket and tell them that were no parking violation warning signs in the area you parked, unle...

wolfs, did you get a look at the condition of the park headwall? sounds like bakers is where the best snows at.
I got my August hit off the Coleman Pinnacle yesterday (8/18) early AM. Because it was not warm, and early, I stuck to the south slopes, although the north slopes looked like they held more adventure. Cups were OK. Runnels were less OK but could choose lines to avoid. Best run was from highest snow on S pinnacle then slight jog skiers L and down amusing gully, might have totaled 600-700 vf right there and certainly made the requisite 1K with various shenanigans getting back. The snow patches tha...
Mad_Dog, Ronj -- Good on you for keeping the streaks alive.
Oh yes, I recognize that patch. It kept my fledgling streak alive in August 2005.
And as the Scotsman so wisely notes, I shall tell no one; no, not ever!! 8)
PS, loved the Slush Cup radio piece.

Hi Telemon, I did see some previous tracks. It might have been one of your trip reports that made fall off the wagon up there. Let me know if you need a partner in the fall.

Midweek, the only crowds we had were the buzzing biting kind. We didn't see anyone past Hannegan Pass on the way up and were an hour from the car on the way down before we saw anyone he second day.
Oddly, the parking lot was nearly full.
GREAT snow, I even had a little pre-dinner patch near the ridge camp to keep my twice a month (low standards) streak going. It has been a good summer!

Hi Rusty. My name is Telemon. I,too, get many of my fixes along the notorious Ptarmigan Ridge. In fact, some of my track marks might still be visible after getting my goods there. I will need another shot in the arm in September and October, the most difficult time to get a hit of the white stuff. Even during those prohibitional times, Ptarmigan Ridge stashes will feed my addiction.

So it gets worse you say? Great. The turns just below Muir reminded me of skiing mogul fields on a pair of 205 race planks. That is an excellent example of it not having to be fun to be fun but I have always felt that it tends to be more fun when it is.

I also ran some shorts laps on the Muir on Sun, 8/12. Visibility was marginal (low cloud deck, short clearing around 8K, then another band of higher level clouds). The suncups weren't as bad as other years, but the snow was dirty, inconsistent and not at all ideal. Well, Aug is in the bag, and the mantra for the day was "It doesn't have to be fun, to be fun." I suspect Sept will be challenging! Last year, there were huge (2' diameter) suncup-craters, with blue melt...
I liked your name for me so much I decided to become an official TAY'er. Thanks, everyone, for great company and a fun day to get August turns done!
Yes- Joe (snow bell), Don, Jeff and I skied the Muir Snowfield on Sat 8/11/07 and were greeted with the deepest suncups I had ever skied. The views were outstanding- Adams to the Southeastish and Helen's to the South made for a great backdrop and temps were perfectly warm for the descent and not too bad on the ascent. We did find that it was continuous snow to pebble creek and as long as you enjoy the suncup rodeo you would've had a good time. No complaints as snow is nowhere else to b...

August snow is dirty and I have a nice new base grind on my skis all at no charge. :)
If I were to do it again, I'd leave the skis, or ski somewhere else. What a silly addiction. ::)
I, not finding any ski partners for Saturday, went solo backpacking instead--but given the warnings, I am still undeterred and determined to get s...

I should add that I ran into three other TAYers at the takeout - real nice fellas, though names escape me at the moment. From the sounds of things, they found unfavorable conditions on the uppermost reaches of the Snowfield near Camp Muir. Given Snowfield suncups are visible from the Paradise parking lot, I'm inclined to believe them.
Guilty as charged (nice gu...
I also found myself in the Pardise area in search of August turns.
Nice day out, not so nice skiing. Weather was great, mostly clear, typical winds above 8000'.
I was up there about 4 weeks ago and things were pretty good, nice corn snow, few exposed crevasses. Now the route is sun cupped in most sections and heavily crevassed above Muir. The DC route is so meandering (going UNDER and around the cleaver) this late in the year that it adds an hour to your trip. ...

I, too, made my way to the south side of the mountain this weekend. Rather than Sunday fog, however, I chose Saturday sun. We delicate types prefer fairer weather given the opportunity.
My paltry effort to round up partners this week was duly rewarded with no partners this week. No matter, though, as there were no fewer than 2700 park guests on the Muir snowfield. Consistent with expectations, I hit snow somewhere in the Pebble Creek vicinity and continu...

It was nice meeting you Chris and sharing some of our "secrets", but then again, we talked and pointed all day long and with the visibility like it was, did we really give up many "secrets" ;) 8).
