That's what I was looking for; thank you all.
The most informative response, by Randy, was about the Visitors Center and needed fuel supply. It rings a bell that I've heard this story before and likewise scares the crap out of me that they will close winter access in a couple years when all the construction is done. That will teach us! I too love The Park and prefer at this point in time to bitch than never go there. It isn't the price I complain about, though I...

I will confess that I am a lazy govt employee. I will stop reading tay at work now and give you citizens the service you need. Please vote better in the future. Thanks.
I get a lot more worried having non-government enities running anything in a national park or any other state lands (although they already do in many cases). Mainly I don't want to see for-profit companies running our lands! The bottom line doesn't always balance the user and the lands fairly. Look at saint helens...what is it? 25 bucks per person, per day or some such, 10 dollars of which go to the company charges the fee for the forest service. This is a derivative of the forest serv...

The park rangers are government workers. When they have had enough morning coffee and feel like putting their boots on, then ,,,,,,,,,,,,, maybe the gate will get opened. Alot of the park rangers I have come in contact with, frankly just don't give a damn.
Until we can change their attitude , nothing will change.
As I always tell people who ran...
Did you drop in from the Muir side or did you climb up Paradise?
I was up there on the 8th and I know it is frustrating to get up at 4:30AM just to get to the park and have to wait an hour or so for the gate to open. It is what it is. The road needs to be safe for the tourists that have no business driving in the snow. They spend much more money at the park than the majority of us. What sucks is being stuck behind one of then once the gate does open.
I would also love to see the White Rive open as well but I just don’t think...

OK, I'm really holding back here and surprised to not get any fired-up responses. I'm hacked off to have to buy a yearly pass so I can access one road in OUR PARK for a few hours on some days in the winter. I have no problem with a closed road or late opening on bad weather days, but there is no reasonable reason to open so late on nice days. All other m...
That's what I suspect as well, but why is it? What happens to these guys? I would think before becoming gov't employees the're like you and me; what makes them not give a crap?
Thanks for the pic compliments, Bandit and Robie. I do love to take em and have been using a Fuji F-700 as my first and only digital for about 4 yrs now. It's very sturdy, fits in my pockets, and only weighs 4 or 5 oz. So far I've had no problems with it.

Thanks for the great pics. What kind of camera?

The shadow picture is really cool.
Word up...there could be some snow up there soon. Did you stay around the thumb tack or did you get a look at the north side?
i toured a little around the base of chair peak today on snoqualmie, nice base, a few inches of fresh, and dumping, but still to thin to really get nice turns in (i dont really know where to look) and most of the small sustained snowslopes where all debried out; really cool area though.
cool looking mountain... looks like good fall lines and plenty of vert.. With new snow and STABEL CONDITIONS, that has to be a hoot. Some day.......
Nice pics, Pete. Makes me feel not so bad for missing the tour (although the sun looks great). There was plenty of debris from the previous night to keep me busy on Saturday. BW
It's always like that as I recall... We'll be back there on President's weekend, or maybe earlier.
I still don't have your email, just PM it to me.

Assuming you didn't start skiing at age 6, we sound like a match (especially the part about the gym membership). ::)
This is my 6th yr of skiing if you don't count a couple yrs in CO in the 60's and it's all a joy: groomed, b/c, touring. We should get out together sometime.

Breathing the essence of winter are you.... nice.
What andre said. I've been touring the Whistler Blackcomb sidecountry for about 10 years now and still haven't knocked off every possible tour or pitch on that map
It was a good day to be out on Ptarmigan Ridge for sure.

They're really not that far. Just a ridge over from the Blackcomb Glacier so very close to inbounds. Taking our time got there in about 2 hours from bottom of Showcase T-bar. This might help - http://john_baldwin.bivouac.com/whistler.htm

We were snowboarding in moonlight bowl on Sunday and encountered the same predicament with the brush toward the pct. I have been there late season also and I can vouch it is usually a very nice ride out.
Burgdorfer describs this area as excellent when there is a heavy snow coverage. I glazed over that part too in an effort to grab some quick turns.
We saw the snowshoers coming out. It was a large group that camped by the lake.

Oface, you were in moonlight bowl, my wife and I must not have been too far behind you and followed your tracks down through all the brush. I think as we get further into winter the brush will bow over and get covered up. We skied through there last January and made it the PCT without any bushwhacking at all. Last year we may have been a little further over (skiers left), but it all looked bad this weekend.
Great, sharp photos. And I like surface hoar---when it's on the surface.
Mac,
nice recon!
I'd like to join that after holiday too
Merry xmas to you and Lisa! ;D

zap - its a Google earth thing - they're places where people took pictures. You have to load up a google earth file to see it.
really, you sleep? when?
and BTW, when I'm on the slopes, every day is epic. when the snowgods see me coming, they bow and promptly puke.

You can sleep all you want when your d e d. Yup dead. ;)
Otherwise sleep is only necessary when conditions are epic. Add another 2 feet of pow with that bluebird, it would have been epic.
You might not have known but sleeping is my other hobby.

We were there on Saturday. The fluffy stuff was a treat...lol, and as far as the drunk, you gotta laugh at the way those kinds of things play out.
dustif2 - Thx, glad you liked the movie.

Lee, thanks for the TR and Sharon's Google Earth image. What are the light blue circles ?
Hello Ron & Maddog-
Great report! Looks like a bad setup for the future with ugly stepdown possibilities. Looks like about 40" then @ 5900'?

Lucky for me, my partner did not ski Saturday, so was highly motivated to go Sunday. I would have turned around if he had not insisted on going for it!
Yep, the photo is below the nose. Without local guides, we needed to stay within sight of the parking lot. ;)

Check out this cool Google Earth thing sharon put together

Thanks for the pit data. Not what this tyro would've expected.
Good info Ron!
We (Justin, Michael L. and myself) ventured up to Muir on the 8th and found highly variable wind-affected snow up high (wind- scoured to bare water-ice in some spots, but mostly covered with several inches of soft snow for fun turns, though occassionally bottoming-out on surprise ice chunks below). The runnels weren't too noticeble above Pebble Creek, though it seemed rather boney for this time of year around Pebble Creek.

We were also up in the Paradise vicinity yesterday.....flat light and flurries in the morning kept us from going high...so once we reached the base on pan point we decided to drop down into Edith creek. This run was a couple inches of dust on crust....and very vertigo inducing as we couldn't decipher terrain features or if we were moving or not for that matter. We traversed across hoping to find better conditions on Bundy's. No such luck.....more dust on crust. ...
Oh, Yeah, I forget to mention that, Mack.
It snowed all day and it was dumping when we left, mid afternoon.

Trust me on this. Go when the weather's good - so if its good weather in February then take the opportunity.
