Jeremy and Mike. Did I see you Sat at Backpacker's Supply?
No, I don't think so. I don't get to Tacoma much these days....I used to frequent BPS when I lived there though.

Lee,
Should have known the huts would be crazy since it was Easter weekend.
As usual, from your tr's, it looks like you guys and gals killed it up there in your neck of the woods.
I've noticed myself gravitating north (for obvious reasons) during the winter. Won't be long (next winter) before Eli and I are crossing the border every other weekend. Maybe we can join forces?
Eli,
Heard from Jcocci that your pics didn't turn out for...

I'm a topozone fan myself! ;) Copy and paste in Word, then print and laminate = waterproof mapping.
That sucker hole looked prophetic - you gotta have faith. Here's a couple pics to show what we found when the skies parted.
Thanks for the great TR iluka.

Great report, great pictures -- sure need to get back up to the pass soon. Thanks for sharing.
Yeah Charles, we really did hit the right day. Any boulders are way deep below the snow. There are a lot of rock slabs where the creek drops down from the lake and along lookers right of the creek, so we followed the slightly less steep tree edge to the left. This seemed the safest and maybe only reasonable way up to Goat Basin. We did have to cross some avy debrise that had come off the steep cliffs to the east of the cirque, so like I said it would be pretty sketchy on a warm day.
I don't think the summit of Mt Hood has high enough cliffs for a BASE jump. By this I mean a jump in which the chute is deployed AFTER leaving the ground, not before. On the other hand, Hood has been flown by paragliders a number of times. With a paraglider, you lay out the chute ahead of time and inflate it before leaving the ground. The first known paragliding descent from the summit of Hood was in June 1988 by Michael Koerner of Everett. That flight and many more are documented in the fo...
A little late, but I add my "great job" as well! It looks like you picked just the right day for this trip. I've also had my eye on Lennox and this does seem like a good year to try it. I'm wondering about the bottom slope - from the Goat Creek valley bottom up to the ridge beside Goat Basin/Crystal Lakes - and how the coverage was? I did a Sept. hike up there a few years ago and that bottom slope was a major boulder field, not much fun with too little snow I would guess. Tha...
Sorry, no picture. But the gully climbs from just south of the lake to the obvious saddle SE of pt 6304. I say obvious, but it is out of sight from the bottom of the 'main' bowl. We happen to approach that way, so we knew it was there.

wow, that is one crowded hut. Baker was pretty awsome - here is snoslut's report:

Orion- Do happen to have a picture of the shallow gully that you used to access the ridge?
good for you. I heard Phelix was a shitshow http://bb.nsmb.com/showthread.php?t=108858
Yeah the skiing back there is super sweet and there is hardly anyone there, one good thing about the road being closed. Yeah I hope to get back up there and ski the northern bowl off the summit of pilchuck. With any luck my av beacon won't crap out on me this time.

Oops. Here's a pic of the slide that swept my ski buddy Eli. He pulled a whoodini in the trees and resurfaced midway down the slope. He opted to ski out in the runout. Barely visible are my tracks next to the runout. I didn't turn to much after that.

Eli breaking trail in some deep shit...
Wow, nice going! That looks like a really fun line! I have yet to explore in the cascades south of WA...
After scoping your other pics, I see we used a shallower and shorter gully further north to skin out of the basin; it starts north of the flats. We then followed the ridge to the top of the bowls and chutes.
Nice TR John! Looks like you guys ripped Table Mtn. a new one...good lines! I like the pic of Eric's board almost shooting right out of the snow! Good stuff!
here is a link to the trip with way more photos

Thanks for posting the report, Lisa. It was nice to ski with you again, and have some company on what would have otherwise been a solo day for me.
It looks like we skied down just in time, the winds totally went nuts after that:

You forgot (?) to mention the amazingly crafted igloo at Reflection Lake...tell Regine that tomato juice is reputed to absorb the aroma...I'd thought I'd about seen it all, but a skunk in an igloo was a new one ;)
Canine faceshots...lol...gotta love it!
lol...true that about East Peak! Yeah, the gully on the north end sure is steep though! Saturday held for good turns, and we got back to our camp (lake basin) by Sat. night. Late Saturday night though and into Sunday the storm picked up and we found ourselves needing to access a ridge via a loaded slope and continually getting worse. Our decision to ski the one line we did during the short sun break we got on Sunday was questionable, and the av on the skin up kind of put...
Ha ha, I wouldn't worry too much about letting the secret out. The majority of people rarely seem to get past East Peak for most of the year.
As far as skinning out of goat basin, it sounds like you chose the same route we did. The gully on the North end of the basing that gained the saddle on the ridge. The summer trail gains the same saddle from the West side of the ridge. We thought the summer trail looked like the most direct route and the day we did...

sounds like a close call, glad you guys made it out ok.
We decided not to post pics that were TOO revealing as most people probably wouldn't recognize it, but yeah, that's goat lake basin aka "valley of the titans". We made our way up east peak and then dropped into lake basin. From there we traversed N over the ridge E of norse peak which is an incredibly easy saddle. We then traveled over to the little crow basin to access the ridge at an easier grade and shorter climb. This set us up for great access to...
Very, Very NICE!!!

hey Jpark,
I know what you mean about a slog down the road. I went up there on 3/6/08. Unfortunately I had to start skinning about 1/2 a mile below the Heatherlake trailhead, due to a wall of snow built up from the snowplow.
The avie conditions were great on that day... so I went up and over the summit and skied the gun-sight and down the Larrison ridge. After I arrived at the upper parking lot I was ravishly hungry and looking forward to a nice meal in Granite Falls... pretty m...

I bet Saturday was good out there. Is that Goat Basin? I have only been there once, but we approached from the Crystal access road and roughly followed the summer trail - pretty amazing terrain in there. Did you approach from the East Peak ridge and follow the ridge over Norse Peak, or did you take Lake and Crow Basin Runs? If you followed the ridge, how was that? Did you lose much elevation following the ridge?

Nice job Boot and Schu-
Quite a climb and unique location, never heard of this place before today.
Great spot, would love to see more pics.

That's a great area, the corn skiing must be really awesome right now!
Keep up the good work, nice report!

I was pretty certain it was a complement; thanks again. I actually get as much enjoyment out of the planning and execution of a trip like this as I do the riding; and I love to ride ;D .
The Weather was a huge factor when choosing a basecamp. At first we were going to camp up on the ridge but the wind was way to strong. We decided on going into the valley both for wind protection and also because the skin out was on rather flat slopes. If the conditions got any worse I was prepared to stay another night to let the storm calm down.

The other Jim,
If that's a complement, the recognition is greatly appreciated. The truth is I'm a total map freak and many/most of my trips are based on different/better/more aesthetic approaches and lines gleaned from map study.
It is indeed a complement (writing often fails to adequately convey tone), covering not only your work studying options...
What a day, couldn't believe the terrain and snow amt/quality at 2500-3000'elevations.

yeah we did it again today but the conditions were highly variable ... but fun ...
Nice. Your reports have a way of inspiring me to seriously ponder your approach strategy...
Jim,
The road is plowed about 3 miles up; I have no idea why, but no complaints ;) .

I agree, the times I've been up there have always been great. That W. slope of Rock Mtn. looks tastey!
jw - glad you like the pics, check out the new ones I just added. I was the first one up to the ridge east of the summit so I got a nice shot (both photo and ski) down the untracked snow at the top. Jim Hill is a bit of a slog, but the views and snow almost always are a good value IMHO.
I love the panorama! I've been seeing that view of Stuart all year after a few tours. Jim Hill is a lot of fun, and the west side of the Chiwaukum range is so impressive from that perspective on JH's summit. Nice tour and photos!
Looks like you are making the most of your trip. Good on ya! Thanks for your reports.
rippy - I have some pics of you guys dropping into the smaller bowl N of cement (that was us hooting and hollering at your lines!) and yeah, that was us setting up camp in the basin. I also have a cool panoramic of you guys skinning back up that saddle. Sunday we dropped the same lines that you guys did on Saturday. Some sweet lines for sure! We ended up travelling 3 basins N from our camp for turns on Sat. I'll try to post those pics...

And one more, this one from Skip, to hopefully up the utility ;) of this report:

I was out in this "area" on friday. Stability wasn't bad but I could see how things could have worsened with more snow and warmer temps. Glad y'all are ok...thanks for the report Stugie
