Glad you got out touring this morning....2 or 3 laps?
Hey Dan - wake me up next time!
Brad and I are talking about an afternoon trip after work up there midweek sometime. Maybe the crustiness will be softened up by then. Let me know if you're up for that, too. Your pup must be getting big now!
No pictures - still haven't replaced your lost camera eh? We looked for it at Yodelin last month. At cruising speed... 8)

The last photo is priceless! Presume you finished with a handstand on the railing & a backflip onto the snow? 8)

Ha - we wore Ari out the day before. He was supposed to talk you into a trip to the Tatoosh and instead slept in! Sorry I couldn't join you--sounded as good a trip as the day before. Too bad summer is coming. We too avoided the waterfall, but skiing around it in the trees was not much fun.
Sorry to cause you such pain Vogtski; well, not really ;). We crossed well before the Falls at about the 3300' level. This was our first time up, so no haven't crossed the saddle from Eagle. I think the travel and turns are much better staying on the north side, but if the gate was closed and you wanted a real early start, that would be a good option, but you'ld miss the chance on the way out to jib the bridge over the Nisqually ;D!
We were the three plus dog group. Great skinning and skiing with your group. Thanks to Pete for setting track on the top portion of the Phantom.
We toured part-way up the New York Gully--I think that is what it is called--skiers left of Slot. The top 500' was narrow and steep so we left it for others, but the snow was untouched by others and the sun crust missing due to the high cliffs so it didn't suck.

Looks like corn season down there Zap! Nice TR, thanks.
However, with some of those place names somebody with an evil mind could rearrange and edit some of your sentences to make it sound almost pornographic. ;D

Oct 5th was rather epic but I wish that the conditions on Rainier this weekend was alittle bit more stable. Vis was crappy.
Just great, Boot...now every drive down the road below Canyon Rim, i'll see yur bodacious line and feel even older :) Did you cross the Paradise River below Carter Falls? Ever dropped north from the col at the top of Eagle Pk trail?

...Tom thought it was his best powder this year, even better than Canada heliskiing.
Couldn't resist adding that little tidbit, eh? ;)
Now when that becomes a bankable sort of event in Europe, there will indeed be little reason to ponder the whole "BC huts versus eurotour?" question.
But seriously, are you ever coming back!?
awful, huh :D Although the slot has INFINITE pics and tr's, I really enjoyed your photos, some of the best I've seen of slot and crooked. Nice!
Nice line and nice read! Thanks for sharing and way to nab it.
I was up there as well...one of the splitters...great day indeed. I keep running into brenda and md2020 everywhere I go...there stealing all the lines out there ;)
What a day. We found way more snow than we had anticipated and it skied great everywhere that we went. The Tatoosh delivered again.
I was prepared three weeks ago to accept the end of the powder for the season but now, (six great powder days later) I just can't get enough. I think that the prolonged season is more diffult to let go of. Yesterday marked six months of powder skiing for me this season.

Yes, it was avy debris free. I too had noted the line from various peaks and was excited to finally get after it. Trying to be vague in a post with such a line is not easy, I figured many folks have seen and skied it, but it's always fun to add a little mystery.
The only surprise on the trip was the buzzing of 2 stroke engines high marking around Mirror and Cottonwood lakes. We even saw a sled on the road to Windy Pass while atop the chute. I didn't know that area...

Hi, Ross. My wife Jo and I were up there this weekend too, and ran into you and Lisa a number of times. Nice meeting you. We didn't really get too involved in the social side of the place this time around. That was our first visit to high camp, but we'll definitely be back. We both loved it. Thanks for the report on the Sunday morning tour. We thought about joining, but Jo's a bit of a late riser and we weren't sure we were up for the...
Was it av debris free? I've never done the line but have looked at it longingly many times. Often by the time you can drive 9070 to at least past the sewage field (or beyond to near Windy Pass), the couloir visibly has big chunks in it from wet spring slides, and thus is less compelling from a distance.
Russ, I was up there last Monday on a recon and we did go up over Hyak and followed the road down to Cold Creek which I felt took more time and covered more distance, although it was fun to ski the road down to Cold Creek.
I had read your report and referenced it in my trip plans which was very helpful. :) By the way, nice work doing it in much less snow coverage, your photo made it look really narrow.

Zap,
Must be nice having a few months down there. Where are you going down south? We're planning a trip to the Bishop area for a week of ski touring during the first week of May.

Having done the road slog as well, I thought going over Hyak and Nordic Pass was more interesting....
Not knowing the "official" name last year, we called in Mother's Day chute, in that thread some else called it "Twin Lakes Couloir". No matter what you call it, it's fun ski!

Thanks for the nice comments. Not sure why it is called the Zipper but I like the name. Yes, it was a great trip and worth the effort.

Nice job. I ski that in early December of 06 and it is a very fun line. The approach it well worth it. On our approach we wrapped around from the SW side instead. Anyone know why it’s called the Zipper?
There's very little out there that can top a chicken fried steak after a long hard day. Jan's, in Buena Vista, CO, makes an excellent one.
As for corn, I'm ready for it. The variable stability I encountered didn't make me a happy camper. April is thought provoking. We'll have plenty of corn for you when you get back!

Those chicken fried steaks certainly fueled your adventure. I was addicted to those while attending college in Texas. I'm skiing corn and you're still skiing powder. ;)
Scott, You had a great week in Tahoe. Jill and I are in Tahoe and have been downhill and backcountry touring during the past couple of weeks. You're right about Kirkwood and Alpine. We have a midweek pass at Kirkwood and a spring pass at Alpine. Both ski areas have backcountry access gates and are backcountry friendly with lots of complex expert terrain available outside the area boundary. Tallac is a classic and you skied a great line. Elephants Ba...
Nice work - I'd thought about heading that way Saturday. Glad someone did! :).
After the last time we saw Robie, we went down ridge and skied some glades, upper slopes had nice powdere but totally unbonded to a slick ice layer; cause us to avoid the steepest & tree-less; I had my skis slip out from under me in the trees and had a hard time getting up, because as I would rise slightly, me & the skis would simply slide down further. Mid slopes had a crust about a foot or so down that could catch and edge and send skis in different direction, not much of a probl...
We saw your trackage as we drove out during a moment of visibilty.Good job!
That was a great day! Thanks for the Pics, Pete. Sorry you couldn't make it, Marcus. The Slot crew found conditions similar to the Crooked -- deep, reasonably light snow in the couloir, very sloughy, and the snow spray tended to catch in my whiskers. It was awful. Visibility was better for us though. Below the exit, in the runout apron, there was a pretty noticeable sun crust below the 5 or 6 inches of new. Here are a few more pics. I'll...

It was cold and truly like a mid-January day.
except that we're skiing out at 5:00 pm and I'm not worried about driving home in the dark. :)
great weekend in the Tatoosh. Every weekend should be like that.
We did have fun, thanks!
Yep, that's me in the first pic, with the black dog behind.
We came in from the granite TH today, although I did this trip from the Talapus TH a month ago as well (longer).

Hope you guys had fun too - from your downtrack, it looked like not enough of you ran down/snowshoe teled the powder! :). I liked your route up from the backside to the ridge - it was safer than mine today. Did you come in from the Talapus trailhead or Granite's?
If a quick analysis of your flickr account is correct, then I believe you're in the first photo above.

Nice to have (briefly) met you up there today!
I was the slowshoer jealous of your skis, and wishing I had brought mine.
Glad you enjoyed your day.

I was in the Tattosh today with Snowbell, Skierlyles and Dave. Unbelievable powder, very deep on the north facing slopes and stability fairly good but some worrisome windloading and potential slab near the top of the Pinnacle/Plummer col( we backed off near the top).
Dave and MD2020 dug a couple of pits and there was a fairly easy shear at 18".
Ski pen was at least 10-12" at times .Visibility was a problem at times so we went lower and skied steep trees . There was loose sno...

Nice! Way to get high and avoid lower elevation wetness.

Ya, but Sping is OK. At least in the Kokanee area. I was going to send a picture, but you can see the same thing as we are seeing -- take a clean sheet of paper, hold it close to your face. There. Then say, "I think I see a line down there".

awsome picture of jeff! too bad you can't see what his skis say :)
Summer sucks, doesn't it?

Sounds like you are having loads of fun. Great to get your trip reports!
Great skiing with you guys and thanks for the excellent introduction to the whistler backcountry. Managed another good day yesterday though you had to be a bit more thoughtful to find that awesome fluff after a windy night.
