Great trip and more photo's here:

http://gallery.me.com/climberdave#100386

Really fun day, despite the "Smile, youre developing hypothermia" conditions.  It rained so much that even the glacier ice was soft enough to carve on.  Best snow was from about 6900-6300'.

Travertine's basement made for a great skiers' bunkhouse!  Thanks for inviting us all up, and buena suerte on your caving adventure.

I'm ready for a few tours that don't start with hours of boots on the back.
Nice pic, good snow info.
I assume your trip was on the 18th, not today?  ???
Otherwise a 1:30 posting for a PM trip equals a REALLY fast ascent to Muir!

A couple photos to follow...

Let me know when you have them ready and I will delete my full sized photos.

Bob
I was about to post my trip report when I noticed that Travertine had beat me to it, so I'll just add my bit on.

With the prospect of a drying trend after a deposit of new snow, I had decided to join forces with Travertine's crew. There were encouraging signs as we left the trail head; however, we had a mostly moist day on the Ridge and on the return trip down to the car. Along the way we briefly linked up with Kyle and Monty. There was also a trio of young snowboarders ahea...
A BIG thank you is in order for the gentlemen who assisted me with my binding "problem."  Also, apologies for the sketchy audio/video on the slide show I hyped up.  I'm sending out links to a proper version.  Despite the rain, it was great to get out with everyone and nice to meet Climberdave for the first time too!  A couple photos to follow...
Skiing MRG in Oct? Hopefully this bodes well for the '09/'01 Winter. Give my best to Andrew Rorabach. Most of my skis became 'rock skis' on Paradise. I can also say that the single chair is not that much faster than skinning up...and a whole lot colder - blanket or not. Love the early season report.
Thanks for these posts, Jonathan.  Brings back fond memories of floating through six inches of powder for six turns before suddenly driving my tips into an unseen rock or root at Bolton or Mansfield in October or November.
Ski it if you can . . . get yourself up to the top without a chairlift!

I counted at least nine skiers there that day (a midweek), and probably were even more I didn't see.  A couple trails were even pretty tracked out by the end of the day!  MRG skiers definitely live up to their hardcore image.
Great reports from Vermont, JS.  Great.

Indeed, season started for me here in Colorado October 10th - very fine for so early.

Let's hope CO and NE fare well with El Nino this year.  Looks like you've got a good pattern forming but November can be a killer for snow in NE...fingers crossed.
mammoth says FREE lift tickets for Friday. i will be on business in san fran sun-thur but there are no flights to mammoth lakes available! blasted!

hope you cats can make it for a free lift serviced turns for a change. god it will be nice to bump a chair again!

off to build my splitter... cheers!

Alpine-Earth - yeah, hiked the spray park trail to the observation rock trail which takes you right up to the flett/russell.  Pretty straightforward.  I usually hike it all in my ski boots.

Great, thanks for the info.  I've not been to that corner of the mountain, only looked over the map and wasn't aware of a trail to observation rock, though I'...

Thanks Dan!  As always, keep on bringing the good stuff man!  You rip some good stoke bro!
Nice post--kick ass extended report too on your website.  Did you hike the Spray Park trail the entire time before venturing "uphill"?
LUV your tr kyle -- mr poster boy  ;) ... not soooo boring ... a really great read!

btw .. i've always loved that pic of you boarding at white pass with the glacier lilies .. one of my favorite hummel shots

fawk yeah!

that cave pic is unreal
sweet! - saw your tracks up there -- i was wondering if it was you guys

Telemack, there are definetly scary hidden crevasses up there now...
Not a weather expert, but if I had my pick I'd give Mammoth a shot. The town is at 8k and you can get above 9k (predicted snowline) pretty fast. Plus the terrain is less open overall than Shasta is above 9k, which might give more options for staying in the best spots with the best accumulation, clean ground cover, etc..

Or maybe spots with the least avy hazzard. In October. That would be a high class problem...

Maybe you've seen this:

http://forecast.w...
you think the Sierras are a better bet than Shasta for the coming storm? Im thinking of heading that way (Shasta) thurs, but Sierras are an option to. Having never been there, do either of you have any recommendations?
Hi, yeah, I wasn't really referring to ski areas. But Mammoth may get enough due to elevation. I was referring to the 13 14'000 foot peaks in the Sierra and generally the high Sierra on the East side... Boreal (aka boring hill) will probably close their ribbon of death after the rain event. We'll see...
yaa, hey there - I know there is somethin' out there. I'm starting to look at the forecast. Last year, Mammoth got 3 - 5 ' the first wk. of Nov. That opened it up.
it's kinda hard to believe it could get slammed in Oct. I have skied all months there, just not in a row. Oct. openings are pretty rare, but they do happen.
believe it or not, Boreal on I 80, (Truckee) was able to open Fri.
Dude, looks like you might have a 4 foot base on Thursday above 9,000' Enjoy the East side if you do!! I'll be jealous...
It was nice running into all of you. It really was a amazing day of sunshine and pow.
At one point I counted 15 seprate peeps tracking out the area.

Click here for a long boring version of the trip
Nice!  Looks like there was untracked-if not fresh, then at least stale untracked.

Seems like broad coverage but not very deep.  What would you say about the hidden-crevasse danger?

That is a long drive for you Gary.  Glad it panned out.
Brian's first BC ski trip?  Seems a little overdue.  I look forward to meeting him on the hill.  I hope that he has Jan's gift for trail breaking.  ;D

Brian is going to the UW and this year has his own apartment, so we have a place to stay. It makes trips to the Cascades more practical. We have been...
that's FABULOUS!

great work early in year.  ;D
Nice work! We must've just missed you. Nice to see ya gettin' the youngin' out. I don't see enough of that. A nice day, eh. BTW, nice pictures. Hopefully see you guys out there in the future.

My Heliotrope Pics.
Great photos. Dana, Abe and I were there late sunday, and more then likely past you guys coming down on our way up.

Here are some of our photos from the day.

Thanks for the stoke Scott.  It's just about time to toss some kindling on the embers that are my ski ambitions.
I identify with your prologue entirely.  We must have began streaking at about the same time.  I have concluded that my love affair with the mountains is perfect as it is, no need to marry her.   ;D

But more importantly I had to realize that was okay
Great snaps!!!.....TAY-Poser! ;)

I confess, I don't do Augusts...

Glad to hear you had a good time Sunday Gary!

I was up there Friday, and it was definitely nice to be in fresh snow.  Can't wait for actual winter.
Thanks Merk and vogtski.  flexitarian, I like it.  I'll also have to make it up to the Burke soon, that looks like a great exibit. Yeah Kyle, nice work on the page, I'm glad you came with.  We have some pretty damn good trips!  Marcus - Friday work? (weather permitting?)

Nice job!  A new candidate for father of the year, and son of the year!  Good looking form on those turns.

Looks like Heliotrope is the place to be for October...Let's go, fellow lemmings!
Thanks Scott I had a blast! For the long boring version of the trip check out my TR
Nice work Scott -- welcome to the TA(lmost)AY club.  It's okay to have other things going on :)

Still want to check out that area you're cleaning up -- maybe in the next few weeks?
Thanks for sharing. Stugie.  It sounds like your priorities are just about right to this flexitarian.

Cool photo inside the ice cave; reminds me of the skiing thru the waning Paradise Glacier cave in the 80's.   I don't have the cajones, but glacier spelunkers should check out the Nisqually terminus during a cold spell.  With the rapid ice recession, the cave entrance is huge!

Today's Seattle Times also has a great ice cave shot from the Burke Museum Antartic...
Awesome pics!  Way to get some.  Sorry to hear the streak is over, but glad you're content with it.
I knew the weather would be dicey, but we were pumped to go regardless!

With patience in the whiteout we got lucky with the on and off weather.

Take care!
Sick, I knew I shoulda went up there.
Nice pics, Matt. And good work on the splitter project. Glad to hear that it worked well for you.

We went up in the afternoon on Saturday and got some freshies, too. Your tracks must have been covered over by the mid-day snow. We were able to ski back to the car after leaving from the Palmer top station for a 2,500 vf continuous run.  Completed my 5th year and Dan's 14th.

I was the unnamed TAYer getting the late start -- beautiful day.  I managed to crampon up to the little pinnacle before 5 and get back to the car before dark.  Some photos here.  http://rossmac.smugmug.com/Skiing/2009-09-27-Heliotrope/9781528_bSNfH#663340707_QXG69

“My goal,” Lofgren said, “is to professionalize even further the direction Mike (Gauthier) was taking the program and get the absolutely best mountaineers and rescuers on the hill.”

I have great respect for the work Mike Gauthier has done to build the climb...
Rain check accepted. See photo from last weekend for affirmation.  8)
I'm unable to log on TGR, the slowest site on the internet, from GVA, so I would like to register my inane commentary here.  Nice pics, sorry about the you-row job: I know the feeling.

Thanks for the note, fraid my schrund hucking is limited to powder landings these days. See you're headed to Nipponville, any interest in you and/or some mates joining us in the Burnie Glacier mid Feb for a week?

Damn, love to but can't . Going to Japan Feb12-24th. Rain check!
author=silaswild link=topic=14129.msg59167#msg59167 date=1254510291]So the MX20s are your rock skis now?  Got 800g Dynafits with the new boot for racing this year?

The MX20 is the choice for tours that have a high slog:ski ratio.  Well, okay, the hike was only 1650' up, but the ski was only 370' down, so might as well make the hike more enjoyable with such a lightweight setup.  The trail is very grassy, so as I expected, just a...
