any how, the top 100' or so had some nice powder like snow on low angle grass that you could turn in. After that is was kind of just survival sliding on what is kind of a road or trail. Made it back to the skid road pct junction without having to unstrap. tried to tele ski the trail back for bit, but that was asking for disaster, so I just booted back to the car ...
Oh yeah, there was one lift.
Tye rock not quite ready.

Nice work Gary, glad to see the ski season is now uderway for you guys.
I was in Anchorage yesterday and the Chugach where starting to look very snowy. Only a couple of weeks away I should think from some real skiing for our northern bretheren.
You shoulda hucked the "shcrund as well. ;D

For what its worth, the Palmer snow field was 163 feet thick at its deepest point, in the summer of 1981. It would be interesting to remeasure its depth today.

Nope. They salt the snowfield to keep it from melting. Salt melts the top layer of the snowfield, which refreezes upon melting due to the very large, and cold, volume of snow and ice beneath it.
That area is used mostly by the race training concessionaires that train hundreds of racers each day during the summer. All ages.

Do you think the salting will deplete the snowfield faster than if it sat by itself? Looks like it's getting smaller and smaller...

Wow, it must have been a perfect day to get up there. I like your picture number 2, a classic view of the way to the little pinnacle. The right edge is really cracked up this year, isn't it?
Instead of the snow bridge near the top, on Friday I elected to dodge skier's right into the bowl and then back up on to the ridge, that worked well, but the snow bridge looked fine as well.

Thanks Joe -- Andy edited and I narrated. Good fun...
We hadn't planned on heading that far south, but it worked out perfectly when we got there.

Magnificent documentary Marcus!
Thanks for sharing, what a view and the snow looked fantastic.
I did not realize that you were so far south!

- I find that snow field to be such a trip!!, just sittin there all by itself. In all reality, it should be called: Snow[man] field, because it is there due to the daily grooming, and salting
Also did a quick blitz up the ridge this afternoon (Sunday). Probably was a half hour late on the snow, since I didn't top out until 4:45, so pretty bumpy and hard. But incredibly beautiful. Some pictures later. Thanks for the beta.
After mid-July, always take that ridge climbers right. Tempting as the snow straight up looks, it's really not that far to go and it's always better to the right....
I'm looking forward to looking at it next month! Thanks for the TR.

Nice !!!!!!!!!!!! Might have to head up that way............
Oh yes, I'd say it's the place to go for October. Maybe even hope for some new. I'd better get a day on the calendar soon because I'll be away caving from October 22-31. Let me know if you have a specific day or weekend in mind.
Good one, James. The view down your run looks like reasonable snow.
Well-framed shots of the Cascade mountain goat, red-bearded variety! ::)
Think it'll be worth shooting for in a couple of weeks?

- nice pics - the deer with its "little set". you never quite know what you're gonna find. I think the snow could have gotten better as it"absorbed" the fresh. I typically yo-yo that way - I'll find a decent section and I'll put a few laps on. You might be interested in my "little secret" of using Salomon Snowblades. They work very well for the summer snow. Good Report Mac,
Since Mt Rainier is a "National Park", doesn't this make everyone "Locals" ???
Try to make it up our way some this winter, the vibe is a lot more "customer friendly" in the Olympics.

Good post and antics. 8) Skiing in warm sun can be habit-forming.
Yeah, hello, Troll-io. I think there is a snap or 2 of you guys but I'm not sure if they are in Mosetick's or cmj's. Enjoy. Might run into you again in October....but not before....
Hey Guys, Nice to meet you, SplitBrdr and I were headed down as you were going up....glad the vodka worked and and it wasn't ruined by the scotch....ahhhh...skiiing in september.

Thanks. I didn't have skins to use either trip...coming from the East I don't have the gear yet. Skins for my last couple hikes would've been nice though, maybe next spring..
Great trip guys!! Despite the less than ideal Muir snowfield conditions, I still had a great time!! Hopefully I will never have to see the snow field so bare again, EVER!! Looking forward to deep powder this winter!!
Nice pics, I got the same 'customer service' on Monday getting my Sept turns, though socked in all day and no pics.
I love the "are you local" question--If you're a 'local' enjoying the park, it must mean you're only contributing small $'s and not worth better treatment. I wondered where that same vigilance was later in the day when I passed 12+ different folks hiking up in the full on clouded white-out in jeans and sneaks at 4pm asking if...

Thanks for moving the TR, Charles. It's interesting how many more views it gets when it's in the right place! ::)
- the title of your turns sounds quite the opposite of snow, but way cool !
good metaphor. I'm down by Reno/ Tahoe, Burning man would like you

That's the real art of ski photography. :)

It was over our boots, and more, in a couple of places, and still smeared across the brown slopes like a patchwork quilt, but our first view was a bit disheartening. Coulda shoulda woulda been there Tuesday.
First lap down: Skiers right ended with a lot of frozen rockfall peeking through the fresh. We angled over to the left. The left ended in scratchy ice.&nb...

Nice work, lads. 1st photo looks like a father-and son-duo from the hair color!
Where was that puddle?---oops; to tell would be a Stash-crashin' hint.
Sounds as if we'll find something tomorrow.

Thanks, Silas. The soft, new, white patches were still holding up today. Pretty nice for run # 1 (11:30), a little sticky for run # 2 (12:30)
One more shot. Didn't want Jimmy to feel slighted. :-)
That's the smart money, for sure :)
waiting for deep powder over a good base. Should have sent them south with you! :-)
thanks for the info.... sad but i guess not unexpected about the snowpack in the cirque receding away to almost nuthin
Pete - there are 3 or 4 remnant neve patches spread out along the upper wall. I doubt if any are more than 200 VF long. There are a few minor patches down in the flats, but no vertical there! I guess there is only about 20% of the "permanent" snow shown on the USGS map left. Similar melting to that which I observed on the White Chuck Glacier on Glacier Peak last month.
Scotsman & Marcus - thanks!

Wife shaking her head in disbelief!
She should know you by now.
Itchy asked me if I was supprised when I saw you skinning up the snowfield.
I told him that I should have been shocked but really I wasn't. Your like a child who never wants to miss out.
It was nice to see some other familiar faces yesterday. I anticipated seeing...
from your picture it kinda looks like goat cirque is completely melted out...is there any neve still clinging to the steeps in the cirque or is it down to bare rock walls now? i remember doing some fun yoyoing in that cirque maybe nine years ago in october...wondering if those slopes are toast now.
Indeed -- hopefully you'll reap some rewards for your work.
Good effort.

Scotsman, Snowbell, Amar: great seeing you yesterday enroute on the snowfield.
The snow was initially hard and icy while hiking up to Pebble Creek, but softened up wonderfully for the skinning to Muir and the ski back down.

You guys hit it right. Nice work.
Andrew - ended up at the beach near Anacortes with the fam. It was sunny and about 70. But my littlest was talking about skiing, so we were there in spirit.

I went up today, Tuesday although I wasn't planning on it as I had a medical procedure in the early morning that required sedation and a day of fasting beforehand( although Snow Bell was advising me not to take the sedation so I could go skiing) Anyway after the procedure my wife drove me home and I looked at the Paradise Web Cams. Bad idea.
It was too much for me :-[ so I threw my ski gear in the car and hot footed it to Paradise to try and see if I could find Snowbell and his...

Great day out on the snowfield with all the new snow!
Given the recent reports of crevasses below muir, dirty snow, and suncups galore, I was excited about the prospect of as much as 2 feet of new to smooth it all out. As we climbed higher and higher the snow got better and better, and deeper and deeper, my grin further widening...

I'm betting most of it will be melted off by the wkend, though some of it up high on the glaciers may linger enough to keep things smoothed out. The mountain sure looked beautiful today from town; wishing all day I still had Tuesday's off :(.
I have great confidence that vogtski or acarey or one of the other fortunate, retired ashford skiiers will tonight post a report of todays blue on new... please, for tomorrow, it rains at 11 k and my only thoughts will be i SHGY..
this is so refreshing (i know, it's what everyone is thinking, but i had to state the obvious)
i'll return to my sweet dreams of knee deep pow now. thanks.
