Well, if you could average 140km/hr.....
Come on man 23 hours!? Doesn't the young Scotsman have his DL yet?
Thanks for the good wishes Scottie it's a bit of a cluster at the moment, as you may or may not know. We'll keep on plodding along though! Have a good one mate.
Beautiful! Great photos, looks like amazing snow too. Well done, maybe I could get photos like that if I could just get someone to ski with me :'(
Oh Gary, you're making me homesick!
Let see it's only 23 hrs away by car..... If I left now I could be skiing by...???
Thanks.
Hoping for the best with the local initiative to turn it into a co-op.
Thats a fantastic picture of Sherpa Peak.
Looks very nice snow conditions out there.
thanks

I usually think of slackcountry as lift-accessed backcountry.

Yep, it's purely semantics, but for me, sidecountry and slackcountry are virtually synonymous. I have a contextual sense that sidecountry involves some amount of hazard mitigation/trivial return to the lift.

Good job staying alive, please don't live up to your username.
Boo (split boarder) and myself were also in the area above Bullion Basin.  I set off a pretty good size soft slab that flowed around me as I stood still on the slope.  I would say it was a soft slab just over one foot thick.  that definately was my first time seeing the obvouus cracking split ahead of me on the snow.  I was able to work my way our of the snow, and we headed home!  Great power day!

both agreed caution was the order of day.

Better late than never I guess?

(FYI I don't mind if you think I'm judging)
Rock on guys!  Great to see a pic of Squeak enjoying the snow.  Looks like a good snowpack is taking form in Tahoe ...
That was an " ambitious" choice for a day like yesterday.
Going into a new area in bad visibilty on a high avy danger day may have been pushing the envelope and trust me I'm trying really hard not to judge. ;)
I am sincerely glad you are OK. ;D
I don't really know either, just guessing.  Proper terms for the next few days might be slushcountry or slabcountry!
Mack

There is a non-backcountry posting section : )
I was one of the '30' who slogged through the lumpy mess.  Worth 1 run and didn't go for seconds.  I have some photos but will save other readers from reliving their memories of the tracked out run.  I am guessing there was a good run there around 8 am.  Had to carry my dog across the creek which was almost filled in.
great tr ... entertaining to say the least esp fm my perspective as a newbie .. thx for taking the time .. looking forward to more ..
Yes, it's a new a blog, and I don't know how to use the blogging software very well. Working out technical details. Bookmark and share if you feel the information is valuable - it's a totally non-commercial blog.

Rather than starting a new topic, I wanted to add this post to Kyle Miller's discussion of Crystal Mountain backcountry but ended up creating a new topic by accident. Seems I can't use this software very well either!
It was a great day up there!

I'm sure we saw you guys, we started out around 10:30 and leapfrogged up with at least 10 others...

Everyone we met was stoked on the way down!
Mac, I think yer right, slack-country would fit better so I'll change it.
Nice work, glad you dodged the bullet on the slide.

Of course, the JOM is a quantitative measure, so if you skied to the car then 2861/2861 = 100% JOM.  See?  More joy than you expected!

:)
Is this a new blog for you, Cookie?  Bookmarked!
Kam - your daughter has your eyes and nose!  Don't let her get on AT gear.  It will ruin her.

Holly, thanks for your first Tay post!  I'm homesick for north lake country, hope to get back soon. The hourglass bowl is nice!  Kam, sweet shots as always!
We had a natural go off a couple hundred feet above us in Pickhandle basin minutes after we decided to turn around. Scary stuff out there.
Actually it was my boyfriend's 'goat starring' eyes that set it off.  No seriously, we believe it was skier triggered, 2 of 'em with a dog and as they were turning right above a rocky area.  We skied down similar aspect further skiers right and no movement to be found. Powder was beautiful and blower but that wind sure was cold. On the ski back out a small slide had released from cliff band above and covered the skin track...yikes.
It was great skiing with you yesterday.  Let's do it again!
Giddy up, Silas.  Pac NW sounds like the place to be, although we had fun with Kam and Allyson yesterday in our backyard. Holly
Nice pic as usual, Jim.

I thought that:
Frontcountry = lift sking
Sidecountry = open boundaries accessed from a lift, maybe including booting or skinning
Slackcountry = easily accessible backcountry, like Heather Ridge, Artist Point or Chinook
Backcountry = longer tours.

Discussion welcome.  Where is that darn TAY glossary when we want it???  ::)

all i can say is weeeeeeeee!  fun day, even if there were a few boobie traps.  keep sending those pnw storms our way!! :)
Squeak skiing tele? No poodling, now!

by the occasional grinding noise between skis  ... and rodents.

What? Turn, turn, turn, turn, turn, squeak, turn, turn, turn?

Looks like a great family day in the sunshine!
Great skiing with you guys today!!  So much fun out there!!  Nice meeting you, Murray and Todd. Zora the Labrador mix will be a great ski dog.  Some photos coming soon.

Well what skis did you use?

my skis(voelkl mountain) were narrower in their widest dimension (104mm) than Charlie's (g3 el hombre) at their narrowest (105mm)!!

Happy to see good coverage so early. Still nervous to bring out my pristine Bows. May try the used Manaslus tomorrow.  Then the Bows at Baker soon for comparison?
Apparently Silas' boots are bigger than mine. Fine day with fine friends, new and old.

Alas, the better skiing photos from the day were slightly out of focus. I've salvaged them about as best I can.

Also of note - I caused a 10'x10' windlip near the top of the ridgeline to fail as a soft slab about 10-18" down on the uppermost crust layer.  Tiny windslab evident along the ridgeline, nothing but sluffs everywhere else. Got a test slope to fail at an...
Hey Jim,

Wondering how it would be up there today.  Got out to Baker instead.  Good to see the coverage.  We going to ride this season???

Scott

Hey  - thanks for putting that skin track in. I went up later in the day...never saw you guys.  Also noticed some windslab near the top. Not complaining for november!
Fun day! Here are a couple of photos. Thank for breaking trail most of the way Dave.
Hi Dan---where did you ski on the ridge?

... -  yes, that is on mt herman facing the ski area.  It was just up valley from the main parking lot.  Any idea on a name?

Jeez, that must be one of the "Death Chutes"!!
fantastic early season trip report from east of the crest!
I am not positive, but one of the patrollers at Stevens Pass told me that you are not allowed to bring dogs into ski resorts as per permit agreements between the S.R.'s and the NFS. But I do know that they (patrollers) don't like it because it is dangerous and they interfere with the patrol dogs.
National Parks (like MRNP and North Cascades) -- all NFS land is fine.  Not sure about ski resorts, but most are on NFS land.  More likely you'll get crap for skiing there at all, regardless of the pooch behind you.

Anyone know the rules with dogs up at the ski resorts? I took my pup up there last weekend and tried to stay out of sight. I know you can't bring dogs in the National Forests (like MRNP), but am unsure about other areas. Any idea?

I guess it's all legal 'til you get caught. LOL.

I thought dogs were only not allowed in National Parks. Isn&#...

Nice -- he looks to be at least 83% now, but it's hard to say without a good look at his feet. :)  Looks like he had a grand time.
Shadow didn't make the cut. But here he is... ~4, boarder collie lab mix, was about 4% cute when I got him from the pound (scrawny with beady eyes).
Nice pics -- disappointed at the lack of doggy shots.
To the east of Crystal Mtn Resort -- the topographic maps of the area have it labeled.
