RuSki, yes I was all by my lonesome on this trip. :)
Great shots, Sharon and Lee!  Eak!
Great trip and a good read. Well done.

The coolest, greatest thing I will take from this thread is the quote from Joeda:

"...That is why the skins stayed in the car, all avy gear on and skied upper and lower bull run all day checking frequently with friends. Tree wells are just as dangerous on a day like that, what I think is solid snow around a tree can liquefy in seconds and end up in a hole head first..."
Would you believe I accidentally left my camera at home?  Doh!
The horse is dead...(I'm a thread killer).
Stability seemed pretty rock solid.  We dug a pit about 6000 ft on a NE aspect just off Pea Gravel ridge yesterday and got basically nothing shearing with hard shoulder taps, except for the top inch of wind affected new snow.  It looked like there's an old rain layer about 2.5 ft down, but seemed pretty well bonded.

As nice of a day it was up there yesterday, I'm ready for more snow...
Great shots of Pea Gravel ridge, and what an epic day!  Takes me back to my days in Hood River.  Gary, great to hear that the road to HR is open, anything to report on snow condition, stability, etc?
Excellent thread, nice of you gents for not dropping the gloves on the martyr and sweater-ing him (think NHL)...
But the "We are both well trained in avalanche safety" comment raised my eyebrows as I did not detect anything in any of martyr's posts to back this up. Not slamming you here man, I just didn't come away with that impression.

The coolest, greatest thing I will take from this thread is the quote from Joeda:

Ben, I hope the posts answered your questions. Maybe in the spring, with longer days and the ability to drive a portion of the road you might try it? Thanks for the photo comments...
tx james - Sharon put up the photos.  Video is up too now

really shows the sled=access potential.  would take way too long with human power.  Nice views btw

This is beautiful, is this in washington?
Thanks,
Ben

No, it is in B.C. http://www.th.gov.bc.ca/coquihalla/index.htm The area around #8 on the map is one of the 2 or 3 best back country skiing locations near Vancouver...less than 2 hours drive after you cross the border.
Nice work you guys, looks like conditions were much better there than in Port Angeles. While I was at work today  :(  Jan and Jeff skied Hurricane Ridge. Temps were around freezing, clouds blocked all the views, but at least the road was open.  :)  !

Gary and Jan
This is beautiful, is this in washington? how long does this tour take/would you recommend it to someone just getting into touring or is this more advanced,
Thanks,
Ben
Since I drove the three of you there and drove the three of you back I can confirm that you all engaged in good discussions about your objective , the avy danger, weather conditions and wind directions , protocol and logging in with Patrol. I was involved in the discussion also.

I wouldn't have gone that day but I respect the reasons you made in going although I was a bit worried about you all for the rest of the day and relieved when you called in.
Joe and I have a wee bit...
Thanks for your inspiring report...now maybe I should head there too!!!!!  Tough to leave when 2800' vert. is only 20 miles away.
Any photo's Matt?  ;)
We chose to go with the full lift ticket for the most flexibility.  So I think it was $69 on my Edge card.  This morning we were a little early so we took an extra lap on Jersey Cream, which you can't do with te BC pass.

Another time (last Thanksgiving) OB was so dismal that we bailed back in bounds.
Did you make use of a back country pass (if available) or pay the full lift ticket price? Sure sounds like a decent November day, either way.
Kneel Turner; is Rafmax going to hell for calling Jesus A.T.?
I knew that that guy was Telemark! I'll bet he's still three pinning in leather boots and wool.

Robie; Eeeeeew! But I'll bet that the beers were still delicious.
Great discussion.  This is an excellent example of how the BC ski community comes together here for the benefit of all involved.

I have a thing or two to add.
Scotty and Joeda (and others) seem to take issue with anyone choosing to tour out of Crystal on Sunday:

Nice trip.  We were up skiing the resort on Sunday in wild weather.  Good call on the day.

All this trail poo and pee got me to thinking back. Many years ago Ron ,Mad Dog ,Myself and others were climbing up MT St Helens. I was ahead as we neared treeline on the way up. I stopped behind some trees and buried 3 suprise beers for our return. Kinda relaxes one for the trail ski out you know. Well we had a good ski back down and darn if Ron doesn't ski right up to my stash and take a leak! " I saw you take a leak here so I thought it was a good place"  Of couse he was p...

Gonna go to Scottish Lakes this year Kneeler?
SkiPrince, the video you shot is awesome!! Nice tunes on the post production too!!

I believe the initial rating was a 3 but this changed when I looked again on Monday.  The Monday rating also included Sunday which was increased to a 4 - obviously a more representative rating of the Crystal conditions but of no use being a day later.  No substitute for field observations as Joe states.
Ahh Ha!  The TGR Troll has revealed himself!
-It's Eric

Joe, Don't forget (as I often do) NWAC has a phone # 206-526-6677.

I think if you own more than 5 pairs of skis, you're not to cheap to have a cell phone.  Right?

...and I always make an effort to peek in at CM Patrol to sign out, check the forecast, and chat about conditions.  These guys are equipped and trained to save yo' ass if you need help.  The least you can do is let em know...
Rafmax,

You're going to hell.  Which sucks, because I'm pretty sure it doesn't snow there.

The only real avalanche incident I remember being mentioned in any of the reports from this locale seems to have been within the resort (waist-deep burial in Powder Bowl?).  If you want a heuristic trap to talk about, how about the unquestionable brilliance of the decision to stay within the safe confines of the ski area?

Even worse, That was Lucky Shot!

But...
well Emily did sidestep it because it wasn't very wide, and I was considering staying fall line after the crux, but luckily decided not to go over those cliffs lurking below...

We were going to head more towards Table, but we rerouted due to the "scene".

FWIW  I came back to Seattle and told everyone how AMAZING mt baker was!  ;)

That's right Rafmax;
I hate America (that's why I like Obama- he's not from here. Just ask the "birthers") and I hate freedom (that's why I stopped telemarking and picked up A.T.).
;-)

Thats ok, jesus still loves you.... he A.T.s too.

Good stuff Joe, but I think the avy danger that day was rated 4= high, not 3= considerable.
I could be wrong but if it was a 4 I think that's significant to this discussion.

The report that I read, (at least I thought) was that the danger was considerable or a 3.
That was Saturday. The problem with avy reports is that they are usually issued later...

Now you're just being silly! Hows that for thread drift. ::)

I'm ready for some thread drift, I think hypermartyr gets the point.

I like many others will tour on a 3 day as usually that's the best snow. I personally will not tour on a 4 day, not just because of the danger but mainly because the terrain I would have to choose to feel comfortable on a day like that would be low angle wallowing. Now I know there's always mic...
Great report!
I would have loved to join you on that tour!
Ironically, I just used the name Tilly Jane the other day describing a Jane Doe. ...Like some Tilly Jane you know...
I just love that name.
The disturbing thing to me was that there were multiple visitors from the same area, not just Hyper's.

Nice work!  Looks like fun.  I need to get up to that area in the winter!
OK.  I 'fess up.  Guilty as charged.

To be more straighforward, that particular chute, is called by the locals, (in hushed tones), "that patch of snow between two rocks".

But the chutes above it, between that "chute" and the upper parking lot, are, indeed, called "the death chutes".

Hey!  To put the record straight, we Baker locals welcome the Seattle throngs in that brief early season period where we have the sno...
Slack-country would be lift accessed if we go by Wikopedia's def.: "The term slacker is commonly used to refer to a person who avoids work (especially British English), or (primarily in North American English) an educated person who is viewed as an underachiever. Slackers, understood mostly as males in their twenties and thirties, may be regarded as belonging to an antimaterialistic counterculture, though in many cases their behavior may merely be due to apathy or laziness.&quo...

Much more helpful than PNWBrit's advice about not going into the mountains.

That's not what I was saying at all  ::)

How, when, where, why, with who and being able to do so again.

But obviously you'd know that being "well trained in avy safety"?

Thanks for wading back into the thread and taking some lickings along with the advice.  The thing that stuck out for me in your follow-up was this:

We are both well trained in avalanche safety

It sound like heuristics played a big role here:  being in the area, skiing with a buddy for the first time in a long while, the excitement over lots of new snow.  As others have mentioned, the human factor of the avalanche triangle is perhaps the hardest to get...
