Where is cement basin?
I'm guessing the answer is either:
a) the oddly magnetic attraction of the dog poo topic, much like other attractive nuisances such as flagging off-trail routes with surveyor's tape, global warming, and thread photo limits

or

b) because you  want to poke fun at those us who were pulled in by "a"

or

c) all of the above

All of this "spring fields full of poo" talk- this is starting to remind me of the Republicans talking about "death panels" and commie Democrats using a swine flu scare to make people get vaccines which is actually socialist mind control....

Why did i even write any of this?
Heh -- thanks Scott.  She's an incredibly easy puppy to take care of...
Marcus, if you need a dog sitter ever just holler.  Seriously. ;)
Either way, that thing ran for a distance.  Glad the rest of the snow was fine!
Yeah, just me and the fuzzy buddy.
Did you do this tour solo?
Yes that's it. I would say the bowl has a more easterly aspect than southern.
Is that the 6" slab release in your first photo?  Looks to be southerly exposed terrain based on the shadows in the photos.
Yep!  plan to do a whole lot of b/c skiing!
Let's get out soon........
Those fences are buried as of 11 am thursday. I found out the hard way, but fortunately didn't find the metal poles.  Super heavy, but on a board it was pretty fun once you go moving, oddly smooth until you hit a fence.  :)

Yeah, it is amazing how a "big backcountry crowd" still ends up feeling a whole lot smaller when spread across the whole ski area, and to be honest, I'm used to lift-served crowds when there, which is a different on multiple fronts, including how quickly slopes get tracked out.

I must confess, having left a boot at home, I sat in the lodge for the e...
Hey Teresa! Great hearing you're getting out too.  Maybe a little less skate skiing and more b/c shredding this year?  ;)
Then this guy comes flying out over double-diamond lift...
She's an aussie shepherd/terrier/who-knows-what mix.  About 99.2% cute. :)

Right on, and thanks for the heads up about the fences!
What kind of pup is that?
Hey John,
I was up at Steven's on Friday getting some nice turns, so am glad to see you and Kyle got out for some turns.
Nice coverage above 5K with some good lighter snow.
Great start to the season!
Nope. No lost camera this tour. That makes three tours in a row without loosing a camera!!!! Just lazy and left it at home. Gilbert might have a few pics though.
Did you loose your camera on the tour again? way to get after it mid week...
Dear Authors,

It is a pleasure to inform you that manuscript number JTIR111209 entitled "EARLY ASSESSMENT OF SNOW CONDITIONS IN THE CASCADES FOLLOWING RECENT SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL" which you submitted to the Journal of Trivial Inconclusive Results has completed the review process and has received a sufficiently high priority to be published in JTIR when appropriate revisions are made.  The comments of the referee(s) are provided at the bottom of this letter to aid you i...

Urine is sterile.  Poop is not.  Urine also doesn't resurface in the spring.

Fantastic snow today.

Actually, if one buries thier poo in the snow it will be gone by spring.  The melt freeze action of the snow throughout the spring breaks apart poo very effectively, leaving no visible trace when the snow is gone.  This doesn't mean i...
Here's a quote from (http://www.greenlivingtips.com/articles/43/1/Dealing-with-dog-poop.html)
"Until recently, dog poop wasn't considered a huge biological hazard, except for in rare cases causing a disease called Toxicarias.

Scientists are now reconsidering that notion after having made disturbing discoveries such as bacteria levels being so high at some beaches that people have to stay out of the water. One of the culprits that has been found to significantly rai...
If not for the job, I think I've have moved to Bellingham years ago...
I was the solo skier doing shovel runs  on 7th Heaven on Saturday.  With all the activity here I was surprised to feel mostly alone during the day.  I saw several of the people in the pictures from a distance.   I traversed left rather than going to the top of the lift and skied the first three runs down skiers left of Seventh Heaven. My track out next to the lift is in picture two.  Once the line got tracked I traversed out under the lift and cliffs for four more fantastic tree runs skier'...
Between 28-40 inches predicted at baker over the next day and a half.... with an already restored base...

Baker rawks. I wish Alpental got that much snow.

Well, at least any rocks and holes that aren't uncovered in the current weather will now be covered with significantly more dense and hard snow once the cold returns...
Those damn people feeding the fox! Last winter I was camped by Reflection Lakes and was harassed all night long by a fox that had no fear of humans. The fox would stand about 5 feet away just staring me in the face. As soon as I went in my tent I'd hear him clawing and gnawing at my backpack.

Anyways, good looking pics and nice turns! I love skiing the Tatoosh!
Here is the long picture heavy version.
Great to see everyone up there on Saturday!  Wow, we were surprised when we pulled into the lot at how many other skiers were already there.  Amazingly a hour later and it felt like we had the place to ourselves.  After our initial run down 7th Heaven, Brandon and I took two beautiful runs down the backside of Cowboy Mountain in the sun then a final run down the front side.  Great start to the season.
Nice creative TR!  Good to meet you guys up there and thanks for the skin tracks  :)
no unintentional rocks  ;)
Actually, coverage was pretty good.  I punched out a big hole through to the ground while I was waiting past the crux of the chute (doing a little coaching...)  But didn't hit any rocks along the way.
All bets are off after the latest cycle...  I saw Baker had lost 15" of base by last night.

is that one of the 3 (ish) chutes of mt. herman? facing the ski area?
Here are our pics from the 14th.

You can see that we optimized for Pabst and Miller High Life.

Congrat's Ben and Kristin!  Nick and I talked to you two just as the Trekkers were coming off.  Glad you made it to the top and had a nice ski down... conditions were fun, that's for sure.  Way to go.

>>Quick compression test @ 4450', N aspect, CT6 found faceted snow, buried hoar (Q1-2) at approx 8".

Curious ( if you remember any extra details ):

How did you identify the faceted snow?
How did you identify the hoar?
What hardness was the slab on which you performed the compression test?
Did you find faceted snow and buried hoar at the same place?
Glad you two had some fun out there!  I too had wondered why reports might be absent from the Alpental area.  However, my main reason for being out there was to try to "break in" new boots I picked up over the summer.  On my my last trip with them they spent more time on my backpack than on my feet!!  ;)  The amazingly horizontal skin out to the lake and back has broken them in for sure.

Great report and Pics Greg.  It certainly was a great way to start the season.
OK, one more pic . . .

On the skin up yesterday I was thinking, "I should have been here Saturday".  From all of the tracks on Tye Mill you might have thought the lifts were running.  We did find good snow skiers left of Southern Cross, not quite to Polaris Bowl.  Took that and Andromeda all the way to the base and we were quite happy with it.  I was surprised to see snowmobiles tearing up Lower Gemini.  Returned to find the base area a zoo with all manner of folks enjoying the snow.  All in all it was a goo...
Good work, all!

We were across the road on Heather Ridge.  Got only one 400' vert run on the N side due to inadequate coverage.  Thanks to an early start, we got good freshie turns on the S (front) side.  We saw several ascending parties during our descent, so it probably got all tracked up by the end of the day.  Fun day.  Nice start to the season.
One of our party members posted a few photos and videos - here's a link to one of the vidoes from his eentsy point-and-shoot, showing the fun of my first turns of this season, at the top of Aquarius.
