Stoked, finally skied the line from the summitt.
Here's a few more pictures to go with Rusty Knees:

Thanks for the photos and turns Kam! After splitting from you we lapped Hourglass in the fog until our third trip to the top of Tamarack ended in a gigantic sucker hole. We started chatting with Craig and KT on the summit about their custom made skis. Of course I thought "home built skis + Reno = Kam" but no, they have their own operation. Must be something about the Sierra that inspires ski building? We ended up joining them on their traverse of Mt Rose -...
Hey Doug,
Thanks for the Beta, another friend was up that way last Sunday, similar report. Was considering that as an option for this weekend, but was recruited to help with an avy course in the Cascades.

I had my class of 9 year olds on Silver Fir Wednesday. You should have come over and lent a hand with them. Hoping to get a shadow in for the telemark class next Wednesday.
I live at the bottom of the hill,I just came back from a quick lap up there!
They had about three or four centimeters of new snow on top of the ice layer,it was pretty good!
Hey it is not the bottom of La Grave, but this is where I work and live so getting out there is always worth it.
There is more than a few hidden steep 1200ft runs, that when the conditions are right are pretty good for being so close to a city.
Nice photos thanks for sharing!

Always nice to see pictures...thanks so much...
He operated at senior citizen pace until lunchtime, then did 3400' more in the afternoon on our set uptrack and farming the down slope while I recovered and fueled up for Rando class at Summit West in the evening. He said the DyNAs saved him only 2lbs over my setup, my response was that my boots weigh 50% more than his. My boss, a former ski racer, said they are almost too stiff! They may not be good looking, but they sure can cook.
Of course the guy eats almost no...

Sorry I was stuck at work! Did you chase him all day, Silas, or did Jonathan throw in a couple laps on Silver Fir to keep his boots from feeling lonely?
Nice one guys!
By the way Silas, are you planning to come down in Feb.? We're expecting a big group from Seattle (Cass, Kelvin, etc.) during President's Weekend. Last year we had 13 people stay at the house. I had to refill the hot tub a few times over that weekend, but it was fun.
What's your plan?

Details later.
Jonathan ended up with 6850' up for the day on his new DyNA boots. The down was fun too.
Very nice! If you skied Hourglass, conditions must have been quite safe. I'm jealous of course, but luckily we finally have our own powder to be skiing for a while at least. Hoping too for a powder storm in late February for my turn at Sierra cement and the breezy weather.
Good to see you carrying on the UNR ski manufacturing tradition.

That SKi_photomatt gets around. He's like a lucky penny. Stay close to that guy, good things happen when he's on the tour.
Great to see Tamarack Peak in powder conditions. Jill and I have enjoyed the terrain in the spring. Wonderful conditions to breakin the DIY.
Well, somebody's got to be out there testing conditions for all 'ya all. Unlike Red Mtn.; however, we weren't pushing our luck! Point release Spring slides may be wet & slushy, but believe me, you want not part of a slab!
Being there for my first avalanche last season must have prompted you to seek out your own advent...and a slab no less....way to one up me partner.
So glad you guys are alright!
Not at all surprised to hear Amar is out there again today ;)

Don, thanks for a great day of touring, the cup of coffee and digging out my snow saw. I still don't know if the BD flintlock failed or if it was user error. Anyone else ever lose as BD saw while cutting a block?
Nice trip report. I would only add that the south facing slope (dropping into fourth crossing) we skied contained some pretty rotten snow about three and a half feet down: lots of sugar with dense snow on top. Nothing moved that far down, but it may be something wa...

..... and I believe that was Amar I saw in the parking lot ready to go looking for another slab today! :=)
Nice trip and gesture to the Scotsman. He will always be a hero to me for his role in finding the lost boys over in Union Creek.
Good luck with the fusion thingamajig.

Thanks for the great day,to everyone on the trip!!!!
And thanks Sky and Andy for the extra spark, putting down a mean pace to beat the weather and reach the Summit....
Take care and enjoy your day on the Duffey today.....
Cheers!

It was a fantastic day, the snow was falling hard and light as a feather. In fact you almost thought it was the middle of winter ;). Finally, finally some fantastic much needed new snow. Jibber, nice to have you out with us on the mountain again, as usual it's always a laugh a minute :).

Another party skied the other side of Rainbow Mountain earlier on this day. The party came from Whistler via helicopter.
Shaun White just may build his next "private practice halfpipe with a foam pit in the backcountry" there. ;)

Nice read Don, glad to hear you're out enjoying the freshies. Thanks for the beta on pit results. Cool also that you did an RB...a bit more time, but so much more fun to do! Like the pics, and thanks for the gear swap! ;) We'll see you soon.
Glad to hear that your working the rust off of that ankle Don. I was hoping to hear a report of you skiing soon.
The rain crust you found was the same layer our group was wrestling with the day or two before.(were you out there the 24th or 25th?) Our compression test didn't fail exceptionally easily but the sheer tests on isolated columns were less than inspiring. Hopefully things will be all settled in nicely tomorrow for anyone lucky and handsome enough...

It was a mansion and quite fun to build. We had just hoped to build it later in the day and much further west.
But you clearly dug an awesome snow cave, which usually qualifies as worth the trip for me :)
Hey ebeam, It's a long drive especially from the lower 48. Got some skiing shots from my bro'. My camera battery packed it in on the summit so I didn't have any.

Well done, gentlemen! Great pics and style.
I've been touched in so many ways by the Peacock myself over the years, words cannot explain. Thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks for the report Mike. Our group has been wondering how the Tatoosh is filling in. We saw your skin track or a snow shoe track up there and were wondering if it was a crown line. Good to know it wasn't.
Thanks for the trip report Randy. Way to go flexing with the changing conditions/human factors and generating interest for a group that's already good sized.
Thanks for the report Jibber. Definitely a good time had by all. I think we poached your Saturday lines, Robie. Thanks for the heads up-you're always welcome!
sky you are tho thpecial. Can i touch you? and i mean that in a purely platonic way. andy put up some whiteout pictures of fitz btw - crevasse dodging is teh gnar
Thanks again, Randy, for a great outing! Glad you liked the two pics I snapped. ;D
I respect your commitment to the animals, you little peacock. Wish I could have joined you.....
I projected myself to the Rockies through meditation and right mindfulness, Toby.
The snowmobile companies actually want first rights to our cold fusion source. But I can't abide it; I believe the animals need places where they can exist in peace. I'm afraid the world isn't ready to ride the 99 bus packed in there like a bunch of sardines every morning. Cold fusion will just have to wait.

Cool trip.
I like Toby's idea of powering snomos with your new discovery.
Were it me with such a discovery I'd go HERE to get my continued research funded.
Nice of you to dedicate the TR, Sky. It shows no hard feelings and open forgiveness.
I think he'll be ok with it. He must be back on his meds now; what we've heard from him has been quite kindly. It's nice when we can all get...

But I'm totally serious. We were doing some astrophysical research at the lab and a byproduct of our low energy fusion cross section studies was a portable cold fusion source. The design is quite compact and light; ideal to power a small car.
Wait, your missing something here! Ideal to power a snowmobile!!!!!
Did you all pack into a Prius when you went to t...
Ha! Awesome... thanks Sky. Very amusing. Too bad about the snomo track use... you'll have to go back and do it all over again.
Hmmm ,I'd better change to sundays!
Tyler,
Excellent pictures, if you ever get tired of engineering, it looks like you have a bright future as a photographer. ;)
Jeff,
When you start looking for recruits for that trip, keep us in mind. We also have hiked that route several times in the summer and I agree it would make an excellent ski tour. There are endless options in that area.

Nice pics Ron, thanks.
Oh, and thanks for offering to kick me in the testicles yesterday as a ploy to divert my attention away from foot pain. Simply brilliant!
On another topic, when can I expect the chia 'fro to sprout and reach its full, green glory?
Never a dull moment with the ronimal heading the group.

Patchy snow started at 3000' and was continuous above 3500'
What a difference a year makes! This time last year I started skinning at the closed gate at the overlook above Lake Mills (I think that's ~1800'), and there was 3 feet of snow at the hot springs.
Thanks for the TR and pics. Someday I want to recruit people for a midwinter...

Great job on the recon. It looks like the HR closure may spur some new exploration from you peninsula prisioners. ;)
I would love to see some more pictures. The Baileys wisper my name.
I'm usually too focused on the destination to do any good recon, but here're a few more pics. A ski trip in the Baileys looks pretty ambitious!
