Ah, members of the silver lining club, I like it ; )
Surprised we missed you guys. As Splitgirl mentioned, we spent most of the weekend slogging around the area doing an avalanche course. It was incredibly fun and a great learning experience. The bright spot out of this last week of miserable weather seems to be that the warm, wet cycle has done an effective job of breaking down a couple pretty reactive layers that were present in our snowpack at Hurricane. All of the pits we dug showed much less evidence of the two major crusts and adjacent weak...
Looking good, David, and looking like you picked the right time to be there!
was up there that day taking an Avy class, we roved about in the rain and wind for the weekend, but was at least thankful for what I learned up there. I was going to take the run you spoke of but it doesn't sound like I missed anything! I have a great idea though that I think might work; do a simultaneous snow dance
This just in: Mucho snow @ Paradise today. and FL below 5500'.

Way to go Monika!! You are the studliest Lange Girl Ever!
All the best to Ryan for a strong comeback - hang in there, patience buddy!
I can report no crust on all aspects and elevations around Baker ski area - Artist Point, Swift Creek, Mt Ann, Mt Herman, Herman Saddle, Table Mountain, Mazama Bowl, Coleman Pinnacle as of Sunday. Rain on Friday and Saturday to high elevations obliterated the crust. Sunday was spring "water logged corn like" condit...

Some shots were with a Canon G10. Some with a CAnon SLR - T1i with a Sigma lens
whoops -= higher FLs only to the end of the trip
Day 1 - was 5% water content snow (moderate density for the Pass) and yeah - I'd say about 30 - 40cms ski pen so your guess is about right. Ie knee to hip-deep powder
Day 2 - was actually deeper due to aspect and windloading but substantially less stable. Scary actually with slides starting on 20 - 25 deg slopes
Day 3 was when FL's went sky high

The FLs have gone through the roof north of the border, too, buddy. Let's go to the Alps.
Yeah.. Those conditions look terrible... From the looks of it, the first part of the video only has 8-12" rideable pow.
Did it turn to muck after that or did it maintain?

Unfortunately, it's time to start hauling in snow making machines into the bc. Unless, you happen to be one of the more fortunate ones (Lani) benefitting from this split in the jet.
Thanks for the report, it's so sad to see what has happened to the snowpack in the PNW. Way to get what you can!
Time to go find some snow.
Do the Volcanoes have good ski conditions above x feet?
Where would one go out of state?

We did a short tour up to the base of Snoqualmie Mt via (S-SW of) Cave Ridge on Sunday and as expected the crust was terrible! I guess we didn't get enough elevation (above 5k ft) to get the softer snow :(
We actually considered Granite Mt on the way out to the pass, but it looked a bit boney... anyone have any conditions on Granite's S-SW face (... haven't seen any TRs this season) ?

No crust at Cougar Mountain last weekend. But now snow either (pretty light and nice hike for the lucky dog, though). Recent reports are reminding me of New England rain crusts of the variety where one hazard was cutting my face if I fell...
Nice job making the hard core sound casual!

Thanks! I usually round up when calculating my mileage, so I'm sticking with 20 miles!
Of course, in the planning stage I usually round down significantly.

The territorial view of Romeo's Slot....Toby's first pic.
Awesome tour and great photos! Now I need to go ski Roosevelt and see it for myself ...

A few of us did Jolly on Sunday. The crust was everywhere. Very sucky. East of the crest is no better.
thanks Scottk.
guess next time i'll yo-yo the top 1000' of the phantom ;)
mine are 187s, and they've done fine in all kinds of crap including ski- and snowshoe rutted snow and even frozen boot, ski, and snowhoe tracks.
Mother bear and cub passed this way on their way to Stevens Canyon, evidently a little after we went this direction to Stevens Canyon yesterday.

Hi Rando -
For the full-on party, moonlight skiing at Loveland Pass is my favorite. Car laps at 2 am? Check. Bonfires? Check. Fireworks? Check. Fun stuff.
But no, we weren't at the passes. That's why it was so quiet!

Andy--I'd like to know more about the bear tracks--will you be around today for a call?
Strong performance -- I calculate about 19 miles of distance and 6000ft of elevation gain on that route.
Where were you guys? Loveland? Berthoud? I lived in Vail for a few years and we'd ride Loveland every full moon. Classic.
Dang, looks fun! I'd like to get some snow down here like that! Nice pictures too - I should know this, but are you using a point and shoot or a DSLR?
Monika, ski pen was 6" I am guessing. Stability was good, especially up higher. Stacy and I were planning on only skiing low angle slopes when we left the sleds because there were obvious instability clues down low (huge settlement of snowpack). Big change with elevation.
Scotsman, very nice use of the language. I wish I could write like that!
Lee, I hope it never happens...I've seen the plans and there would be a lodge on the top of Romeo, a stew nazi inside ser...

Perfect; I used them in ice and breakable crust and crude today. Best ski I've every had; lighter and more crud-busting than my Atomic R:EX, Volkl Snowwolfs, and Dynafit 7 Summits (all these are very good skis).

Hell of a nice place to put a ski hill toby
This report doth sooth my savage beast. For sure thou hast posted stoke of immersurable beauty and the stap of jealousy is but like the pang of an icy knife that cutteth through my desires. ( My attempt at Shakesperian)
looks like you had a lot of fun! cool to ski something different.
what was the ski penetration and the stability?
Great effort guys! So cool that you guys are out out exploring this area in January. My touring resume lacks trips in this area which I hope to change sometime soon.
Although I may have reflected moments of despair, conditions surpassed expectations, and we were rewarded with some novel lines that get hit with little to no frequency. Thanks for all of your reconnaissance efforts in making this adventure happen on short notice.
Tidbit- not to be confused with Timbit. Andrew McCulloch, who engineered the complex series of bridges and tunnels through Coquihalla Canyon was an avid reader of Shakespeare and would often recite passages from the plays to his workers around the evening campfires. As a result, many of the areas in the Coquihalla Region are named after characters in Shakespearean literature, such as Iago, Romeo, Juliet, Lear, Jessica, Shylock and Portia.
Ha.
No worries. The good far out weighed the bad. It wasn't really that bad. I probably could have done parts of that a little more efficantly. It was cool to get a tour of the area you know so well, and worth it for the views alone. Has me inspired to go and check out the area a little more. Thanks for the solid lead!

How do you like the manaslus? Do you think they are a good NW ski?

Thanks for the TR. On January 5, we stopped by the XC Center to get information about the Lodge. Nice photos of the terrain.

did you have any epic table tennis matches at the lodge? that sure is a nice spot.
Nope. Too many Australians playing table tennis the first night we were there. Then we were too tired the 2nd night. Yes, nice spot and closer than Golden!
Your photo shows the top of Heather point and its SE face. Happy Face is on the North side and runs down to a flat open basin that the crest trail runs through. Looking at the lower half of the run from the basin there is a group of rock outcrops that can look like a Happy Face when filled in on a big snow year. I first skied it about 30 years ago and gave it the name that has stuck at least with Stevens locals. Both the face you show and Happy Face are prone to being wind swept and or wind...

Nice work...
Blewett's been pretty bony for a while and I don't think they've gotten much more new snow in the last few weeks. Larry_R posted a Sasse ridge TR which might give you some ideas for Jolly...

Hmm, are you telling me it may be time to consider retiring my first-gen FR100's Silas?
