Yes, very cool you got up there. Christy and I skied that just after Dan did it (link). It was my 3rd time up the route with skis and the second time skiing it. Sky and I certainly had an awesome time wallowing up that route. Good times.
Nice Nick.
He ain't lying, the snow was extremely consistent for all the vert - never too heavy, never grabby - although I think we could all agree that it was the best for the first 100' right off the top of the col.
It was tempting to just head back up and do it again - it would definitively be worth it for someone who was there a couple days.
Oh yeah, stop the glop. Bring something to minimize it. If Ethan didn't have some of his stuff I don't think I...

aah, so you were the ones with a green truck that we were hoping would come back to give us a jump! we were eyeing it from accross the way. looked nice!
It's all about the skiing and it sounds like you nailed that part! Must've been a fun solo. That Helmstadter character soloed it last year.

I knew I needed the exercise, so forced myself to go, and was happily rewarded.
Hmm, 'opted out'? .... for a much burlier choice you might add. Congrats on your excellent tour in Johannesburg couloir.
Thanks, but I wouldn't have had to drive as far! I was actually consdering the other side of the white pine somewhere.

Wow, I wasn't aware. I guess I never dove deep enough into your patient history. I was researching some recent mild symptoms of my own, but I was focusing more on acute colchukitis. I thought getting away for the day would help. I guess it's progressing... Thanks for the infection... and for the added richness.
I drooled from across the way too. It is pretty mesmorizing...

Cool images! Looking pretty sweet up there.
It was a beautiful day up there yesterday! You must have had the brown car. We pulled in at 7:30 and left at 1:30. How was the crevasse action above the black buttes? Enough coverage? It looked like you made the right call on the clouds. By the time we drove out of the parking lot at 2 the visibility up high seemed like it was probably nil. We talked all day about how perfect the window was for the summit push! Good work

Awesome!!! Conditons look like they are getting better and better.
I think I met that say paraglider guy up there last May. He was not able to fly that day due to winds. Where did he end up landing?
The winds were basically non-existent, which I'm guessing is a good situation for flying. He took off about half-way up the glacier, and touched down...
I have had two cougar sittings in 09 and a bear mother/ cubs run in, all while trail running. These occurred in the Enumclaw area. Usually I will go years in between these types of sitings. My awareness has been raised lately with similar encounters from non- touring folks. Speaking with a friend who is in law enforcement this week. Last month two men hiking in the area, shot and killed a cougar that had been making a full run at both men. They thought it was an elk crashing th...
Awesome. That is a beautiful line on an intimidating peak. I've had several trips to the Boston Basin during warm spring and summer days, when the C-J coulior looks like certain death due to all the ice coming down. Fun to watch from camp, though. Looks like winter is the time to be there.
Nice job fellas! Looks like some pretty decent conditions.

Thanks for sharing. I have talked to a couple of people that have skied there but I bet that it is far and few between these days.
Quite a pair that road approach and the hike to the lake. I was up there a few years ago in the spring and the path of destruction coming down Avi Canyon was amazing. I believe that it was the largest scale debris path I have seen yet. Hundreds of full sized trees laying down like toothpicks.

Good call Scott. I recall that line looking good from across the way. I'd take that and a good breakfast anyday!
Excellent TR, nice to hear about others getting off the beaten path tours up there.
Great report and pics Jim! Looked like a spectacular way to spend a weekend.
Nice work! That line had me mesmerized on El D every time I turned my head around. I've heard it's called the CJ couloir (Cascade/Johan).
Nicely done, way to get it in safe conditions. Pure ski tour, as opposed to the 'shwack of your other choice. Thanks for the report and great photos!
ajjenkin: that ribbon looks tantalizing from above, but is some serious ski theory down low where it dumps into BYS--v. steep, probable loose snow on rock. the line we skied is something i intend to repeat (so good!), maybe someday that ribbon will come into some kinda 'shape.'
Ryan: all work and no play makes jack a dull boy...looking forward to when you can join us again.

Wondered what ya'll were up to this weekend. Nice work. No sluffy, scary, slabby stuff this time! Eric, how did that little feeder colouir look?
Nice, Silas - good call. We were looking at Arrowhead Sunday afternoon from Heather Ridge. That is one beautiful pyramid. Looks like fabulous weather!

Appreciate the info. I'll have to check out the rest of those pics.
We went out there to check out your tracks today and to ski the opposing N-facing slopes. Great day.
Awesome trip report and great pictures Jim!!
thanks for posting this as it really made my day watching and gets me excited to go ski. looked really fun.
Awesome!
Congragulations to the crew!
I remember skiing Baker as a kid and looking up towards Mt Shucksan, wandering if that could be skied!
Well you guys proved it can.....
I am always happy the crew and my brother make it back safely.....

Thanks...I posted a full tr over at splitboard with more info and pictures. There are two washouts on the river road. The first one is about 6.5 miles from the lake constance trailhead and is passible with high clearance 4wd. We parked at the major washout 4.5 miles from the trail and biked it with splits on our backs. There are about 20 blowdowns across the road and 50 on the trail. The trail is horrid and you can''t skin till you get to the lake. I did not know of the fire last summe...
yeah, I'm envious too. I'm gonna quit looking at this site......
BTW- Eric, you're supposed to be holed up writing, aren't you? Come on dude, share the pain ;-)

Nice work guys. Watching you from our camp on Saturday, great timing and great conditions it seems. Envious!
The camera is pretty easy to use.
After a few days around the resort I had it figured out.
What I've found to be the most important is sunshine and smooth snow.
If you wear a helmet this would also help.
I've found that the best footage are lines with a lot of exposure vs in the trees.
And it helps to have somebody else in the video to give better perspective.
My favorite part is that you don't have to stop and take out a camera.
You just put you...

That vid is very good for non-edited, and fun in any event. Also, leaving the cam on during your short midrun break is a nice touch. Actually, I think you're on to something here by shooting and posting a start to finish "one take" , unedited POV vid.
Your vids (saw the ones from Nisqually chutes last week) are remarkably steady, given the activity. Have you had a learning curve to get the shots right, composure etc. ? The equ...

Hey that is our friend and his dog's lunch sack. He would love to get it back if someone could drop it by the Alp patrol or just leave it there.
We got to the bottom of the coulior and realized it was still hanging on...
Holy smokes, great use of the day! Such a nasty approach and a beautiful area, I'd love to see more pictures. Never been a fan of being followed by wildlife...
Quite the slog up there from the Whiskey Bend lot! Must be a little surreal being on the HH road with nobody around...normally packed with snowshoers. Thanks for the report!

From the trailhead, how long before conditions allow skinning?
On Saturday, we parked about 200 m below the trailhead at the snowpark sign (~3600 ft) and booted up Grouse Cr until ~4100ft where we started skinning. The timber between the outhouse and where it opens up along Grouse Creek is devoid of snow. The first part along Grouse Creek wasn't worth s...
