The Jibber don't lie.
Best skiing I've had since the snow started in early November... and I've skied 8 Sundays since that epic "rightside up" dump.
Here's a couple of shots to give you an idea...

Haven't been there in a while, so I looked at your pictures with some interest. It looks like the slash piles in that clearcut are finally sort of working down into the ground, and some new little trees are starting to grow up. There were a few lines worth skiing on that slope soon after the cutting, but it at least looks like the situation has improved in the last bunch of years. Still, it was much more fun (and scenic) when that was a nice glade ski through the mature open forest...
Wow that's a big group! My girlfriend and I are Mounties and we were looking at your trip. Glad it all worked out. I think I might recognize the person in the bright blue jacket from the Ski Mountaineering class, which we are students in as well. We may be asking you if we can register for one of your trips soon ;)
I see you have a trip planned for Wallowa's. We can't do it this year but it's definitely on the list. Have fun!

The ridge was pretty wind swept once we were getting above treeline (~6000'). No cornices, the winds didn't seem to be able to make up there mind, so there was a distinct peak along much of the ridge top.
We couldn't see more than 50', so we gave up above treeline. I would suspect that the ridge was pretty windswept higher. There were some very steep lines to the NE leading to Lost lake, but I never felt exposed... maybe higher up.
cappy, that should be great if the weather works out this week. Talked with some guys that went up there a week ago (to C-Lk) and had the place all to themselves... when does that happen?!
Okay, good -- I thought I was losing my mind. I'm going to call you Scon.
"Al, just curious where are you planning on camping next weekend?"
This coming weekend, maybe somewhere 'enchanting'... Not sure yet. I have a couple leads, but at the very least I hope to camp at 8 mile.
Ok, I peeked on your map. Was the ridge pretty wind worked with cornices and stuff? I heard that route can be a bit tough if you don't enjoy ridge line exposure.
Funny Marcus,
I go by either. You must have heard s...

Well that'd be a good break-in test for the group! ~8-mile ridge traverse from Rainy Pass...
There's a lot of good stuff in that area, I'm sure you'll find something fun closer to Rainy Pass.

Wow, that's a great trip! I'll have to keep that area in mind next time the Olympics are calling. The webz had said that you could drive to the Upper Dungeness TH, so we almost went over there... but the thought of a long hike with skis/boots on my back deterred me.
What elev did you find skin/ski -able snow at?

Nice, thanks for the link. Lots of good looking stuff up there.
The camping is actually for a Mountain Travel & Rescue course that John (why did I call you Scott -- I'm having a day) and I will be helping teach later in March, for the BC ski patrol that we're on. It's usually in the Smithbrook area, so Mastiff would indeed be a haul from there in the afternoon.

I'd be game for touring any where in the general vicinity on that Sunday. There are some good options that we can pour over once the time gets near. Getting to the eastern side of nason ridge from camp would be a haul though.
Ahhh! No wonder it sounded familiar. Maybe we can get up there after the MTR that Sunday. I'd love to explore that area more.
Nason ridge Marcus!
We had talked about doing the same thing thursday morning. Then I noticed you beat your way into teh merrit lake tr road on the way to leavenworth yesterday morning.
Where you climbing mastiff's east ridge, or the south ridge in between howard and mastiff?
Thanks for the report.

Nice -- how many folks did you have in your group? Where's Merritt Lake? Don't think I've heard of it...
chmnyboy: Where did you park? Where can you start skinning?

so...what's the story here? as i understand it, you cannot access the hurricane ridge area via the hurricane ridge road...are they saying it's okay to be up there if you don't go via that route ONLY? I'm planning on trying the Wolf Creek trail next week to access the Hurricane Hill area...
Joe- nice job on the TR. An amazing day out in the Tatoosh, I look forward to many more.

Brad lies...he told me he just lost $50K gambling in Vegas. That could have gotten a lot of new ski gear Brad, or a few new MOSS tents!
Wow, sorry again guys, thanks for understanding. I am proud to announce I am no longer bowing to the inadequacies of my immune system to fight off some dumb flu bug. This week is going to be difficult to get through knowing that there's some snow to be had. Glad you guys got goods! Nice pics and great read Joe!

According to the newspaper, the park rangers are hiking around the slide to access the ridge road with vehicles parked on the far side. Sure seems like they could do the same thing for the rest of us with a bus or two until the road is repaired. I'm not sure who's calling the shots up there at the washout site, but if anyone's trying to hike it, it might be useful to know that the Lake Dawn Road on the west side of the lake is shown on county maps as county owned right...
Amen my friend -- a little powder will often cure what ails you.

It snowed hard all day; at points the snow blew sideways. Ample amounts of powder better than telemetry would lead one to believe. ...
Seems like it's been that way all this winter--telemetry says 1 inch and 5 mph winds and reality is 8 inches and 25 mph winds!
Great job you guys, sounds like "plan B" turned out to be a good choice. Wish it would have worked out for us to join in on the adventure. We are looking forward to hearing more details.
We made an effort to get to the Ridge today. Hiked up the Little River Trail. We made it to elev. 3,800 ft (6+ trail miles) before getting turned around by increasing wind and snow. Here is a link to a few pictures from our day.

Great to see that the flurry of moderating and administering responsibilities did not take away a great ski day for you today! More skiing, less posting, good advice for us all.
Thanks for the report!
I have a feeling I am going to miss access to the high country via my car! I hope that sink hole on the Ridge Road gets filled long before the predicted 6 weeks!
I was interrogated by the flaggers and turned away by the Ranger yesterday as I made my way to the Lake Angeles trailhead via the Klahanne Club access rd. She told me one of the neighbors was pretty ticked off at all the cars using the road since the washout and that they were thinki...

Sounds like a good time at the power lines yesterday. I bet it was even better at the radio towers, although that's just from observations. The wind was sure wild on outback today.

I was up messing around the power lines above Grand Junction today, and I was kind of surprised to find around 5" of new snow that I was actually able to have a good time on.
I was out there too. Great to be skiing some fresh snow again, and yes it was good!

Looks like a "serious" ly good time. Way 2 b.
Mr. Joe Bell,
I'm amazed to come home to your post, it's inspiring to start writing more of mine again. Wish I could've joined you all today, but had good AVI search practice in lieu of skiing in the BC. Next weekend hopefully is spent in the Enchantments, hope you're game. Stugie better get back on his! Cheers.

Thanks, it was an unexpected grab from the video. I just liked it because it showed motion :)
Love seeing all these Olympics TRs -- great stuff.
Great job on the recon. It looks like the HR closure may spur some new exploration from you peninsula prisioners. ;)
I would love to see some more pictures. The Baileys wisper my name.

Excellent TR and photos ! Welcome back ! Keep writing TR's. You brought back a storm cycle. ;)
Glad you got some turns in. A lot quicker up when your not towing an anchor, huh?
Thanks for sharing guys. I hope to have a chance to ski there one of these days.
Excellent write up and photos as usual Jason. I felt a little like I was along for the ride. :)

Nice trip report.
We stumbled into that same mountain last week when trying to find fresh snow coming up from the lower 48. It was pouring rain at Baker and the lower environs of Whistler/Garibaldi, so we just kept driving because no one wanted to climb 2hrs in the rain to reach the snow level with zero visibility. We reached snow on the Duffey Lake Road, parked at the weather station with a bunch of other cars, and followed someone’s skin track not knowing what to expect. It turned i...

Robie sorry I missed you. We were out to Mazama ridge and I agree, wow oh so good to just ski some powder. Best runs in what seems like a long time.
When I grow up I want to be like you guys... Impressive... Now I see where Prior gets the name for their "Spearhead" splitboard...
The terrain up there, during high pressure, is incredible. The playground you have, while maybe not AS accessible as Roger's pass, is pretty awesome. Keep it up Lee.
Yeah! Snoqualmie skied way better than I was expecting today, and it should only get better tomorrow and Monday.
Heads up: north aspect snowpack up high is much different than warmer aspects. The multiple, supportable crusts are absent and things seemed not to have stabilized much. We skinned to the top of the Chair Peak bowl and dug a pit on a 38 degree slope, 330 degrees aspect, 5400 feet. We got CT12 Q2 in the old snow, several inches below the new snow-old snow interface, and...

Looks like decent coverage up high. They can always move the start of the DH to the top of Pattison. That would be good TV.
Great pics. Thanks!
Great pics. Thanks!
Awesome pix, Lee! It looks the big crevasse has filled in some.
When I first tried the link, there was an extra %22 at the end of the link which I had to chop off to get to the good stuff.

I know that I am critical of conditions, the Wasatch will do that to you. MLK day was great fun in fresh snow, especially in one of the most spectacular spots to ski in America you simply cannot beat the scenery and vibe of Paradise. It is something that is truly special (especially in colder pow which does happen there )
Nice pics Lee. Looks like Whistler's in decent shape for the Olympics.
