Silas,
were you the guy who showed me his 5 lb skis? (about 12?). I was the solo guy with the red climbing boots. The wind was nasty on the ridge, but I crossed over and there was much less wind on the west side. There was even less wind on the top!

Thanks for the link. I'm shooting for an ascent Sunday morning on splitboard. Welcome the company if anyone would like to join in.
If only ski area could put their fuel/energy into something more constructive, like grooming nordic ski trails (instead of destroying them). To a paying nordic skier, it seems like a major waste of resources for a closed hill.
Beware snowshoe races at Hyak on Saturday too ("Romp-and-Stomp"). I still can't figure how to drive the car with my snowshoes on. :)

For anybody else interested, directions for the shortcut (again, appreciation to the folks from Bellingham Mountain Rescue who were kind enough to lead):
Starting from the Heliotrope parking lot, skin up the road until you hit the outhouse on the left hand side. From there it's a relatively modest bushwhack about a 1/4 mile SSE to the creek/wash, which you follow south and up. Turn more uphill at the second gulley to the east (best seen in google earth shots), gain the ridge,...

My estimate is nice dry tennis shoe hike up to about 3600' and then we followed the boot pack up to the SW rib around 4600-4800' where the wind speed drained my enthusiasm and caused me concern about a ski blowing away. Probably < 35mph, but no fun for a geezer.
A fun morning out, and a quick drive back to town to enjoy the balmy afternoon.

Thanks for the cheery snow report, John. :'(
Since I hate to be the teller of bad news, Steve, here's some good:
Rumor has it there was "perfect corn' on Granite today, so turn that frown upside down, partner!

this scares the whoomphin heck outta me ...
btw .. great pix

I'm really glad we didn't go up the SE ridge which was where we were heading. It just looked slabby and we'd have to cut switchbacks on exposed terrain. It was more of a feeling to reverse our course from that direction.
Then up higher, I'm really glad I stuck to tight switchbacks in the trees. I was tempted to just make them longer and go out on the open slopes. I would have been toast if I did that too. The main clue was the heat. Next time I'd get an alpine start...

Great job with awareness and navigation choices. Anything you'd do differently?
Did you get a look at what it was sliding on?

Paintball war games? Oh man, that sounds fantastic. Thanks for the update Tim.
way to go Amar. I have alot of respect for your streak. For you. Keep it going- and keep me in mind come July when the snow lies further from the trailhead. I should have more than enough motivation saved up by then to get us to wherever it may be....
Hi John,
Wow, what a small world. Allyson and I met Chris at the beginning of the season at Mt. Rose ski area. We've been skiing together quite a bit since then.
He's coming over again tomorrow night to finish making a pair of skis. I'll be sure to let him know you said hello.

We found similar variable conditions today near Catherine and towards Silver Peak. I was hoping the sun would warm up the snow better than it actually did. The daffodils are blooming in my yard, after all!
The better turns were had on the spindrift dust on rain crust in the lower Silver Peak bowl up from Windy Pass. Neither of us busted through the crust. It was slick and quick on the Nordic trails back to the Silver Fir ski area, where there was some dreamy creamy bumps up top I jus...

Great TR and photos. We've visited the Moab area and Arches a few times in the Fall. Your winter photos were beautiful.
Glad to see a big Roadtrip in a short timeframe. Jill and I are waiting until after the Olympics to start our annual Ski Roadtrip. Your TR gets me enthused to "get out of the PNW" for awhile.

Hello Kam,
I see a rare appearance of the elusive Chris T. on this here forum in a couple of photos. He seems to be settling in down there just fine.
Tell him I say hello.
Thanks,
John

Damn, that report has me crying in my beer!
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad you had a great trip, it's just killing me that I wasn't there also...
After posting last week (and mistakenly thinking my sweetie had monday off) I went and bought a new topo, started packing, and mentally started getting ready for some killer backcountry turns and a nice camp near Hoffer lakes. Yeah Amar, Happy 100!!
I added a photo of Clint near the bottom of the chute.

Great to see everyone enjoying the sunshine and powder! Close friends, sunshine, powder, and gorgeous summit views, not much better than that!
Here's the info. I also posted a request on TGR, and got some info regarding lodging, etc. If you have any additional questions shoot me a PM.
I could not find the beta post you are referring to. I am headed that way soon, and would like to check out the beta post... could you post the link or the beta?

Great to see an area I know little about. Wow, touring a-plenty.
We experienced the same conditions about ten ago, days including the flat light with no fog or snow and barely survived the ski back to the parking lot. Actually thought about putting skins back on to ski down. Glad things stablized after last week's snowfall.
Man that looks nice. Are y'all returning later in the spring to ski the395 corridor? Seems like a really good bet this year.
Ck out Coon Creek Canyon on the NE shoulder of Castle Peak when you get tired of Peter Grubb/Round Valley. A good close to the road option with steeper lines on the N side and a nice open corn slope on the S side for the trip back home.
Thanks for the TR!

Solid.
I'm hiring you as my CFO. Way to keep the shred/expense ratio high.

On the way up we skinned across the burn section on the closed road and followed a skin track up. On the way down, since the snow below 6,200 feet was crappy, we just traversed the burn section back to the trailhead, thus avoiding the alder chocked closed road. If the snow was better, I would have gone more fall line down to the road and then traverse back.
Machine assist? I could do that tour on one leg!!!
Just kidding. I was up there with JWPlotz on saturday. I aggrivated my hip on the road, and did most of the trip pulling my left leg uphill. Kinda brutal, but worth it.
Did not ride the CNC though. Snow looked like it was pretty nice in there.
You traveled the closed section of road on skis in both directions?

...which is why we went to the nearby Snowy Mountains....
i see, hope you had fun..
Road trips are as good as it gets ! Looks like you got it ! :D
it might be Lolo...if not it's right next door!
We hit those same chutes a few years ago. Did you ask for beta on TGR as well? What a great place for touring
Hope you enjoy the second 100 even more! Congrats.
Congrads on your 100th
That is quite a impressive streak.

You never know - great report!
Thanks for the reports from MT, snow looks good, if not plentiful. I regret not getting out more from my time in Missoula, is that first pic of Lolo?
Nice work Dave. We were up on Chair peak basin the day before doing Avy 2 class & the skiing kind of sucked. Looks like killer terrain on the right day.
What a great broventure! Thanks for the video.
As usual, great report and photos Amar!
You've got to love those guys who insist on laying a skin track for another run at the goods.
100 months, excellent! So what is the gestation period of your guide book? Or did I miss its release?

Nice centennial TR, Amar! Congratulations on your perseverance.
Way to go on 100 months Amar. I enjoy reading your TRs.
"good to great snow conditions up high far outweighing the crust down low"
Your description fits the Mt. Hood skiing conditions lately as well.

We went up on Saturday the 13th and conditions were not that great periodic white outs and several inches of new followed by rain and sleet. Spent Sat. and Sun nights on top. About midnight on Sun it cleared up and we had a great day Monday http://www.nwhikers.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7981342link to TR on nwhikers

Id reccomend checking out SHOWDOWN, Mt, if you are in the area. They have the most snow in Mt. The terrain is pretty mellow but there is plenty of steeps.. some backcountry.. Cheap tickets and a great atmosphere.. Showdown is about an hour north of Bridger and dont forget to stop in White Sulphur Springs for a soak in the hot springs..
...which is why we went to...
Glad to hear from some of you who appreciate that a good adventure doesn't need to be good. You just need to come back from it...hopefully whole and, hopefully, without swollen ankles (or other busted parts).
