Can't wait to get up there!
Good to have you back Zap.
It's amazing how much the summit of Dege has melted in just one week!
Good to know you can still skin from the hairpin.
Definitely get back there on a clear day.

Didn't get around to posting photos from my trip there a couple of weeks ago, but will do so now so that you can see some of the scenery that you will encounter.

The snow depths seem remarkably similar to that found by my son and I when we were there.  Certainly has not melted as would be expected this time of year.  That is likely to change this week however.

Alan
Get it guys! Been wanting to hit that zone for sure. Heading up to the Baker area next weekend and would be good to see you guys up there.
Maybe I talked to you, too, up near Frozen Lake where I was finding some nice smooth but fairly short runs on north and northeast faces, if you were the couple coming up from Sunrise Camp area, and over via Frozen Lk to Burroughs. I saw a group of 4 guys and 2 guys down in the bowl N side of Sourdough Ridge, too. Looked decent there but foggier and windier. Great to be there and to ski all the way down to the lot at Sunrise, with some nice visibility and even some sunshine by the time I got back...
Tony -

It was great meeting you!!! You forgot one thing in your TR:  "sticks."  ;D ;D

Real nice meeting you in the parking lot. Turned out to be a great day in the mountains.

When I went up there Friday to scope out the road there was trail crew with a chain saw cutting perpendicular slits in the snow to speed up the process.

Geeze...
I think a run with a front loader would pretty much solve the problem...must not be in the budget?
Maybe they can make some snow sculptures in the snow with the chainsaws!  :D
A few Quotes from the day :)

Epic day out...  ~7,000 ft of perfect consistent Hero snow.  Amazing group dynamic on the route finding way out.  Not to mention getting dinner in the most happening place in Trout Lake. :)

Best tour of the year!

Jess-what a lovely day it was!!! Thank you again for sharing the NINE years with me.  I couldn't have done it without the support of my friends, and especially my husband who broke his own streak of 4 years last year to let me continue.  Our 16 month old little girl can't wait to ski herself!  Aiming for TEN years....it will be a party July 2011!!!!
Next heat wave would do the trick. If we ever get a heat wave! I was freezing last night in Portland watching the fireworks.

that was my first BC ski trip in washington in 1981

Crater lake in Washington???

Great pictures Zap, I've always wanted to ski there. The only time I was there it was raining cats and dogs for days as I was doing business in Kalamath Falls (brought skis in case). It looks like a virtual Chute Fest with an abrupt terminus at the lake edge.
Nice TR.
Gotta love the chutes with corn.

Road is now clear to within 1/2 mile of Cold Springs CG. Road is narrow and difficult to turn around in especially big rigs. Rangers are requesting people not park closer than 1 mile and also asking that you turn around before parking.

It's interesting that you have to hike on the trail, but vehicles a...
I read that TR Gary, and was inspired by it. Thanks!
I did manage to skin all the way up except for the last 100 ft of the false summit. It was firm snow most of the way up. I couldn't have done it without my ski crampons. Skied all the way back from the chutes but wound up ascending a few hundred ft. We nailed it pretty good. Snow on lower mountain beginning to form sun cups and runnels but still skiable.

Did we do an avalanche training together in Port Angeles? You seem fa...
Nice Lowell,
Great to see you are getting your son out into the backcountry at a young age.
We have been encouraging our older son to join us in the backcountry. It is a great to experience time together as a family in the mountains.
Thanks for the reminder of the original Slush Cup, I have some hazy memories of this event.

Gary
Great TR Tony,
I like your adaptation of the title to match the route and the conditions.
Sounds like a replay of our trip last Saturday.  :)
The south west chutes are a great ski. We also saw evidence of wet slides and slab releases.
How were the snow conditions after exiting the chutes?
Were you able to ski all the way back around to the climbing route?
Glad to hear the snow bank that stopped us just past Morrison Creek Campground has melted out, less hiking, mo...
Went up again today, Sunday, July 4 with my buddy. Snow was still great on the steep parts, bumpier on the not so steep...

Some pictures here..
Several skied within 100' of Cold Springs. Still 1/2 mile walk down to the cars
Great report and great pictures!  Happy that you all had such a great time.  This is inspiring, for sure!  Did you manager to ski all the way back to the cars?
Nice report Jessica and CONGRATULATIONS Lara on 9 years of stitching up turns!
The backcountry fashion police would have been proud.
Looked like you made good as I hung pictures and worked on ski related stuff instead of doing it.
Happy 4th too!
Road open to w/in 1/3 mile of TH. A few snow patches impeding lower-hanging vehicles at 1/3 mi. Plenty of parking, except, I imagine, this weekend. Good Luck!
Doug,  Glad to see your TR and photos.  The first photo provides a nice perspective of the sun cups on the flats and the mountain.  Nice smooth turns on the third photo.

Welcome to TAY.  Hope to see you at Snowbasin.   ;)
How was the road? Open to the trailhead? Parking spots at the trailhead?
Zap - Glad to hear you're enjoying your trip to Lassen and other points south.  It was good to meet you at Bachelor.  Just put in my first turns-all-year post from today on south sister.  I'll be posting as "DesertSnowDoug"  Happy 4th!
Cool Lowell - skiing with your boy must be rewarding.  My two boys are 3 years old and 5 days old (just had one) and I can't wait for them to tag along with dad for some summer skiing (if they are interested).  I'm glad you had a good time.
We had half a day to spend so took the bikes up the west side road and then hoofed it up to Gobblers knob.  The view was as thick as it gets so I guess that was you we couldn't see..    ;D
Thanks for the report - I'm thinking of heading up there next weekend.  Sounds like a good time even though you didn't summit.
i called down there yesterday and the hard opening date/time is 7/9 at noon, due to road repairs.

I plan to follow your lead and do some patriotic turns on the 4th.  Per our conversation, do you think there is an easier spot to make my transition?  Should I boot or ski?

A young guy,like you,
should be able to boot Hillman much quicker than a senior citizen.  ;D
last week had the opening as today 7/2, but as of Tuesday "Tentatively scheduled to open July 9."
Yes...in and out thru knapsack pass. I'd bet they are going to open that road soon.

Good pix, and great to camp with you 2.  I didn't know you left the boarders so far behind!

Needed a mellow day out to get my legs back under me.

Right on! So that pretty much means your idea of a mellow day is 8 miles biking, 14+ miles hiking, at least 5K gain (and probably more). Sound pretty mellow to me  ;D Looks like you picked a good day for it. Knapsack pass for approach, or main trail?
Awesome!  Jonathon, you are getting after it at the moment.  I had to call off a very similar route on M. Sister a couple of weeks ago due to weather.  I wanted to ride the next snowfield to the west.  Nice to see you made it even if it was a bit soft.  Here is a photo of the line from a couple of days ago taken from Broken Top.

Thanks for the report.  I am planning on heading to the Wy'east next week.  Hopefully it consolidates a bit.

What a year!
Totally agree with freebird that the best was on the northeast aspect. Really smooth. I'm planning on heading up there Sunday and ski off the top of Dege or the NE face of Antler.

Here are some more pictures at my website showing the conditions.
We planned on just skiing the run in the video...  Once we saw the slopes on the backside of the lookout (Northeast) there was no choice but to ski them.  By far the smoothest corn we've found up at Sunrise this week.  The steeper slopes skiers right of the lookout were the best.  No sun cups to groom just smooth corn. 8)

Here are a few pics from the day...

I wonder about those couloirs between the Needles in your telephoto shot.  Does the snow extend all the way to the base of them, or do they cliff out?  I was thinking the second couloir, between Keeler and Day, although a quick glance at the map makes the one between Whitney and Keeler look more realistic (I think the upper reaches are hidden in your photo.)  Could be an "interesting" variation to the mountaineer's route.

Cool trip to a beautiful area.
Keith, I'm counting on you and the other PNW skiers to groom the sun cups before I return next week.   ;)

Please shaveMMMMM down for a senior citizen.
Great TR and photos.  Jill and I love the Eastern Sierra.  ;)
We skied Barrett Spur last Thursday with similar conditions.

Our approach was via the Elk Cove Trail #631. I believe it is a little longer but puts you in Elk Cove and sets you up for an easy exit.

This was our first visit to Berrett Spur and I don't think I've had such an interesting experience on Mt Hood, Barrett Spur gives you the feeling of being on a completely different mountain, no where else on Hood do you get this feeling. Plus the views of the north si...
Thanks, I've tried to post more TRs this year...  It's a great community we have here in the PNW/TAY.

Snowbell, the main tracks all went via Curtis.  People had skied the Interglacier side of steamboat prow, but i didn't really notice many tracks (any ppl?) going that way to Schurman.  There was only one crevasse beginning to open that we noticed b/n curtis and schurman, but more to come as (if) it (ever) warms up.
That definitely counts!

I'm confident the skiing will remain stellar through the weekend.

On your word Keith!
I'll hope to see you up there.
Thanks for the TR Trees.  Congratulations on your first summit.

I am curious if you gained Sherman via Camp Curtis or a down climb from Steamboat Prow?
Sounds like a great trip.  You seem to have timed it right.  I was hoping to get down there this past week but the unseasonably low FL's have stymied my plans.

I would have loved to join your group but we had two kids birthday parties last weekend.  My consolation prize was an hour in the "bouncy castle".  Strangely enough, it seemed like good training after a half hour or so.  You might be supprise at how much cardio is required to throw kids around in one of those thi...
Nice video, Freebird.  Which aspects of the lookout did you ski?  We're hoping the northwest slopes are still in good shape for this weekend.
