Hi alpenho,
Nice report and pictures - I like that place.  Was the Scatter Creek ford drivable in a low-clearance car (sedan)?  How was the traverse on the W side of Cathedral Rock?
Thanks,
Pavel
Great pics! Sorry I couldn't make this one Brian, we'll get at it soon enough.
Peter and I skied the Unicorn on Sunday. We got a late start so didn't get to Snow Lake until 1:00. Were the only skiers/ climbers on Unicorn Sunday afternoon - I imagine that Muir was a little busier?
We booted all the way to the top from Snow Lake. We did have skins with us but for the most part, the slopes are too steep and the booting went pretty well. I have to say that the most difficult part of the climb was getting through the melting snow and rocks around Snow Lake. I stepped...
The road is open from both sides of the park.  The NE side is skiable but thin with a traverse and estimated 45 minute hike back to road and a hitch hike back to the main parking lot.  Looks like an amazing line with a some steep sections for the brave ones.

The road's been open to the Devastated Area for quite a while; I think they generally open it pretty early in the season.

True for N access.  About a week ago it had not been open from the Dev. Area to the south side TH.  Just curious; I probably did my SoCascades jaunt for the summer.
Ski boots work fine on rappel...I can bail in any ol' footwear.

What did the NE face look like?  Is the road open all the way to the Devastated Area?

A week ago, it was great (see the TR from July 3). The road's been open to the Devastated Area for quite a while; I think they generally open it pretty early in the season.
Cool! I had a similar fun challenge soloing up Pinnacle a few years ago in my rando boots. Going up was fine, but I took extra care on the steep "3rd class" on the way down.
Very nice Mack and Keith!

Thanks for the invite Mack. Sorry I couldn't join you. Looks like a fun day for sure.
Nice.  :)

Thanks jerm - I was suckered by the handy address they provided for me along with the image data (which ended in .jpg, leading ot my confusion), rather than going my usual route of right-click to properties.

[edited to add: not sure what's up with the red x's where the images should be - I used the image tag and proper image URLs, maybe it just takes a few minutes for TAY servers to do their thing?]

You used URLs to a page that your images live on, not the images themselves. Right click the images on live.com to get the url to the image, they look like this:

Sam, great meeting up and finally making some turns.  Looks like the weather should be favorable to get at it again later this week.

What's with the winter ski pants Brian? I was expecting to see a couple shots of you in your Daisy Dukes, or at least the blue, flowered shorts!  ;)

C'mon Gary, I can't bare-all all the time; lucky for you Sl...

A new version of mixed climbing, Mack.  Nice work.  We were dodging wet slides on the Flett.

Can't wait to see your TR, Michael-you report inspired me to get in to the Mowich area w/Snowbell.
Glad you didn't have to stand on the pedals for 5 miles!   ::)
The snow was great in the mornings.  As the days temperatures built up the snow would get mushy.  Not really sloppy, but it was harder to hold an edge on a traverse in the afternoons.  I considered moving camp to White Pass after climbing Glacier, but I'm glad I waited till the next morning.

A few pictures here.  http://rossmac.smugmug.com/Skiing/Sahale-July-2010/12899409_ehGxb#931664855_8xH4T

Looks like you guys had a good day and made a smart choice based on snow conditions and the 11 person rope team to play leap frog with.

Glad to see you and Tyler had a good day at Elk Mountain last Monday, we were thinking of you as we hit the trail that day.

Great photos Sam, hope we get the chance to meet you...
that morning alpinglow is awesome!

It's a real difference in just one week.  on the 5th the entire east aspect of heather canyon had 100% cover.
perhaps a few were mister bugs, and some hanky panky was going on.......?
"Did you do any roped skiing? "

we were prepared, but never felt the need.
Nice!  I love that first photo.  We looked across at the Newton Clark from Cooper Spur on Saturday and it looked like it would be an excellent ride.  Pretty amazing to get 4000 feet of such good snow this late in the year on that aspect of Hood.  Nice work!
nice report..
i have climbed up LR twice & down it once.  thinking skis would have been a nicer option than crampons on the way down...

well done
Thanks for the report.  I'm thinking of trying this trip the weekend of the 24th.  What was snowpack like once it became skiable?  Any thoughts on what another 10 days of summer will do to skiability.
Great reports - it looks like you guys chose well going for the north-side during this heat spell!  It is weird with the lady bugs clustering up that high - we were backpacking in the Siskiyous a couple of months ago and opened up a climber's register can at the top of a summit to find it full of a couple hundred lady bugs.
Nice - that's quite a feat!  The last picture deserves to be on a magazine cover.
Looks like a really nice trip!  I'd imagine you were spent by the end of the day.  Did you do any roped skiing?  Thanks for the report!
Nice Kurt!  Way to take advantage of the weather window...
Thanks for the link to the photos from the 7/10 trip.

Thanks Zap - the snow was really good, but is starting to deterioate a little with the hotter weather.  The road is in good shape with new gravel through the burn.  The last two miles or so are pretty rough due to numerous cross ditches though.
Nice TR and photos.  The snow on Snowdome looks excellent. How's the road to Cloud Cap ?
It was enjoyable reading your TR and traveling in a counterclockwise direction.  Looong day.  Nice photos.
Nice traverse.

Hey Keith, It had to be enjoyable watching Mack with his duckbills and hand brace be "on lead".   ;)

Great day. Highlights:

Climbing the rock face with running water above the deep moat at the top of the Unicorn Saddle.

Watching Mack lead the summit block in Teleboots

Didn't use skins. Was able to climb in my skis really well without them, booted on the great snowpack, and took advantage of skiing the traverses without skins to make good time and use less energy

Mighty fine! If I could've gotten off the couch this weekend, I'd have been back there too - glad you got it! Once that road starts melting out, it melts fast!
yup, those 2 adventurous souls going through Knapsack Pass were me and Brenda. Good to meet up with someone back there who kind of knew the way, as it was our first time taking that route. I am confident it will be our last. The Spray Park trail is so much more direct. That's a nice tour you did dropping into Mist Park then over to the Russel. We ended up skiing directly up to the back side of Observation Rock between it and Echo Rock.

I took an embarrassing ride on a slide that...
Thanks for the beta -- the diagonal ramp to the avalanche apron is mostly still there, although it won't last much longer.  Great trip up Sahale!
What an awesome way to finish up the season, although I didn't feel so awesome when finished.

Ron, it's been pleasure to skis with you. I feel incredibly fortunate that I found such an accomplished and motivated partner....and who didn't mind sharing his secret spots.

Looking forward to when you can visit us and I can share my secret stashes.
It was cool to run into to you on the way home...  Wish I could have hopped into your truck for another day on Adams...I went on a 20 mile loop hike the next day, which was much harder than climbing to the top of Adams.  And I had to ski on my hiking shoes...   Glad you guys had a good day.  The SW Chute was one of my best runs ever...  Could be the first time thing...

Here are a few pics from our trip...

July 9th: better than expected also.  Headed down by 10:45 AM.  Decent at the top, then got worse maybe ~ 8500-9500, but then it improved into sort a "slurpy-lite" which if you stayed light on your feet, was quite skiable.  Even the bottom was not too atrocious. One carry-over on the way up and 3 short carry-overs on the way down, but just barely skiable to the parking lot...that will probably change in the next few days.  North facing Tatoosh still looked decent!
Cool stuff Amar, thanks for the report.

Anyone ever call you Amar Animalkar? You are a climbing and skiing animal- meant in a complementary way... It must be nice to be at a level of fitness that allows you to do what you do.

I passed you on the way down. You looked like you were in a hurry , so we just exchanged quick hellos.

Going up the Interglacier, the boot pack was superb. It is very annoying trying to follow numerous boot packs on snow. Sometimes people just don't have a clue.
I was thinking we missed it too but it sounds like we had a much better time of it. Basically we stayed high, well above timber line. We dropped into the big almost flat basin at the bottom and slightly skiers left of the chutes. At the end of that basin was an obvious square shaped notch. We began traversing just above and left of that notch which was above 7000'. We descended as much as possible while traversing SE but had to ascend a few hundred ft total to get over certain terrain which...
Skied the Interglacier on July 8. I'd call it an anti-alpine start. Late to rise that day. All said I found good conditions as was noted in the earlier post. It may have a few good days left. Enjoy.
The couple I talked to didn't say anything about being technical.  Even after I said that I'd like to ski it but "wasn't too interested in significant exposure".  Its been 35 years since I climbed the Kautz so with my foggy recollection of those much snowier years I just assumed that they descended the entire thing with out removing skis.  But I really can't be sure.  Any way this report is moot as the temps and weather are changing and the skii...
very cool. I'd like to get down there.
