It was quite the scene last night.  Fun to see so many familiar faces and a few new ones. Spectacular views and colors of sunset.  Great skiing.  Bummed I missed the in to the taller col, and was too lazy to walk back up.  Enough to find the entry to the one on the left in the picture.  A sweet ride in that col as the sunset : )

Hey BigSteve... nice pn on the ring...  BTW, if anyone finds a Windows 7 HTC smartphone on the saddle (right side of bowl), plea...
Looks great Holly!

What a night... fun stuff.
nice Zap!  glad to hear you and Jill are out road tripping again.
The last picture of Trevor says it all. Hell of a solstice.

Hey, was this is May or June?

Doh!  June.  I've corrected the topic - thanks.  :-[
you guys missed the druids that came out and started dancing on the summit after the sunset. great fun indeed.

fun evening, lovely sunset, great way to ring in the summer

Nice!  So glad you guys are on the move and on the mend.  Have a great trip and keep us updated.
The skiing is usually bragged about too much any way.

Great work!

Sounds like I missed a good one... Or did I (6/22/11)?
LOL

nice... guess you celebrated too... you lost a day this year btw.
I love everything about this trip report! Great, just great.

Not bad for a old fart !
Then you got on your adventure touring bike and rode to Packwood  for two beers and back home in time to grill some unfortunate beast.
Gotta love a day like that.

You almost got the beer part right--it was 3 beers and no driving!  I was pretty parched after that 1,052 watts/m2 of sunshine by the time I got to 9-1-1!
here are a few images from the day

it was good for the spirit to be up there
Thanks for the post & the pics Lowell!  We really had good Fortune with the snow & the weather.  Too bad Debbie had to sit this one out.

The kids are getting big...

...though on the plus side, they're carrying more and can break trail - and don't require new boots every year anymore  ;D

I'm from Texas, too, and also owe much to Amar's penchant for thorough chronicles. Be careful if you transfer to Seattle. You may end up loving it and never going back...
Awesome TR, you guys. It's always nice to hear the climber's perspective for a change-- loads of photos and details of the ascent, few of the descent.  ;)

That Jeremy Park looks so svelte in those cirque pants. Someone should pick him up for an ad campaign.

Did you notice if the White River Glacier still has coverage down to highway 26 ?

Not much snow below 5,000'.  Best to traverse out at 6,500' to Timberline Parking lot.  Great run to there.
Your route was down West Crater Rim, under Hawkins Cliffs.  You can ski down Castle Crags/Reid Headwall on the west side of that ridge.  Leutholds would have to be accessed early off the summit ridge.  Variable conditions last week, but good where it was good!  <<<<<<<<<<<<<==========~~~~~~~~~~~
I might beat Charlie to the top of a climb, but I will never, ever beat him to TAY-posting for a trip. :)

Adding a couple more pics.
I think we actually parked at 2700', taking a close look at the map now.  We parked on a curve, and the road above us took a sharp left with snow, and looking at the terrain and map on Google it looks like we got to the more southern 180 degree hairpin, at about 2700'.

The slide path would have probab...
It's great seeing all those kids sharing your passion.  What a great way to celebrate Father's Day.
Missed you guys but saw quite a few others on my first trip to this area.  Thanks Skip and Greg and the skier and boarder I talked to.  Without your input I would have spent a lot more time waiting around for visibility to improve.  Fun lines!
If anyone knows the name of the rock outcrop (above Illumination Rock) that I skied next to please let me know.  I talked to someone who said they thought it was called Leuthold Cliffs, but he wasn't sure.  I can't find them named on any of my maps.

i think that may just be considered an extension of the west crater rim.  The Leuthold Couloir in on the opposite side of that ridge, west facing, above and lookers-left of the Reid gla...
Yeah, it was awesome when we were climbing up, but as soon as that sun went down it set up like concrete.
what a difference a few hours makes.. skiing down @ 3pm the upper section was fantastic, got really deep & mushy - i detoured over to the lift served area for somewhat firmer conditions.

"Windy Pass" isn't a USGS designation -- but it is the moniker used by the Summit Nordic Center (and it is an accurate description)

It also is a Green Trails Map designation (Map # 207 and Map #207S), which combined with the USGS Quad mentioned above (my personal choice) provides excellent navigation and location tools for the area.

Nice TR.  Any idea what elevation you had to park at?  On June 4 we had to throw in the towel at ~3100 feet in a similar "mountain vehicle" before getting too much chassis to ground interaction from the whoops on the trail.  Was the slide path still a good looking approach option aside from not being familiar with it?  Made for quick, traverse free work to ~6300' a few weeks ago

The high res forecast can be found at the following link.  Its accessible from the  WRF...
Three cheers to you Lowell and Dave. Happy Father's Day! Those "kids" are hardly kids anymore, look at Heidi rip it up!

This tricky part this time of year is finding the start of the road -- here is a hint -- follow your nose -- you'll pass by something very stinky right after you leave the pavement and hit the gravel.
Great people, great skiing, great weather, and tasty candy bacon!  What a day!
Looks like an awesome day. Was up at Steamboat Prow yesterday and could see the top of Stuart poking through the clouds. Looks like it was clearer there than it looked from our view.

Thanks for the replies.

Sometimes we all have to get after it any which way we can.  :)

made it to the summit and took a dump in the crater!!! WOOWOO talk about steam jets!

You are an inspiration to us all.
Thanks for the replies. I've tagged the Summit 2x on Rainier now, my 2nd and 4th time on the mountain (this was my 5th)
First time I was wicked out of shape
2nd Time I was wicked out of shape but sucked it up made it to the summit and took a dump in the crater!!! WOOWOO talk about steam jets!
3rd time I got hit by a blizzard -20 degree weather and a white out (scarest moment of my life)
4th I rocked the summit
5th (this trip report)
Excellent read.
If it's any consolation it took me 4 tries to get to the summit before I succeeded when I first moved to WA.
Additionally, the first time I went to Muir with skis , I actually skied down with my climbing skins ON not because I didn't know that you were supposed to take them off , but because I was like a giraffe on a skating rink and I figured that the skins would slow me down.
Good effort.... keep going!
I had spoken with somebody at Meadows on a previous trip and he told us it was best to park on the shoulder outside of the gate.  The gate was closed when we pulled up and when we got back down.
The winter approach would be about 3.5 miles on the road.  I think you'd want to feel out the snow above the gully before getting into it instead of coming up from the bottom if there was any question about stability.  If the snowpack was fat enough that you weren't worried about the line being filled in, then maybe you could take the south side summer trail-ish route through the woods and up to the ridge, see how the snow looks, ski the col and ski the Perry Creek trail out....
Did you park in Meadow's lot?  Gate was open?
Thanks for sharing your adventure.  I enjoyed your recap of the events as you travelled up and down the mountain.  We've all been beginners and most folks don't share their early adventures.
Thanks y'all.  It was good to get back up there and clean up some of our mess.  Looks like we have 3 poles up there still, somewhere.  May have to wait until all the snow's gone for that...  Mmmm, 35 degree bushwhacking...
