Killer report, Marcus!
What do you mean "last big ski trip of the year"?  :-[
Nice - I dig the 3rd summit photo!  Wonder if it is possible to ski Scott w/o mosquitoes and runnels?  Seems like you'd have to time it early, but then probably be faced w/ a long road hike.

Was there any snow at the Trail Creek TH? I'm itching to loop from the Cathedral Rock TH over to the Waptus River while the weather is nice, but my backpacking friends are wusses when it comes to hiking in continuous snow.

That loop's a favorite.  Just for info, the river crossings (Waptus 2x) are running about to the base of my crotch and swift.  And a...
Great pictures John!  Mae's a cute pooch, glad she came out of her spelunking adventure unscathed.

Thanks Ryan -- it was super fun.  Lots of relaxing time and some great turns.

Pipedream, from looking at the map the junction with the Trail Creek trail is almost exactly where we started the continuous snow.  We didn't see the junction as we passed through, but I'll bet you wouldn't be on continuous snow for more than a mile before it was to...
We started from Buck Creek, via Dollar Lake and across the Sourdough ridge. As you noted it was awesome snow coverage.
I'm happy that you boys are getting out in that direction! Early access is the key.
Dogs on Daniel- I love it!! Looks like a super fun trip Marcus.

Sorry Boys...
Unfortunately you guys missed the big hits off the backside of the Palisades.
Nice trip thanks for the enthusiastic TR, a couple years ago did it while Sunrise was still closed and it's much simpler when they open the road with snow! Hint...hint Park Service ;)

May of 2009, says the photo.  That's some decent snow coverage....

Another prominent aspect of NPS culture is their seige mentality.  Underfunded and often over-extended, they tend to see the visitor as the source of many, if not most of their problems.  This can result in management taking the easy way out with closures & blanket prohibitions, for example:

If Vogtski is correct about the temp/seasonal status, then I believe the "quaking" is indeed an emotional reaction to having to confront someone; that does invoke the "fight or flight" physiological syndrome, with release of adrenaline, etc.; similarly the "hand-slapping."  While I am quite critical of park policies and actions in a number of areas, I have met (and even skied with) a number of the experienced LEOs and climbing rangers.  All have treated me...

The drama from the very beginning was that the Rangers were on the prowl for a specific party THAT WASN'T US.  From the beginning Ranger Rick I had assumed my party was that other party and began accusing me/us of not listening to the rangers warnings and instructions....which again did not apply to us.  Best I can piece together is that the Rangers were looking for a party who had sto...
I could be wrong, but I'd guess Ranger Sue is probably a seasonal with a LE commission.  The average odds of one of these types of seasonals eventually ending up with a permanent job is probably less than one in ten.  Those odds can improve a bit if one shows they are really serious about law enforcement, traditionally the main path to career advancement in the Park Service.  It has been changing a bit nationally in recent years, but historically, superintendents came from LE backgrounds an...
The route through the forest along Lodi creek was very easy and straight forward affording a little cool shade for a while.  We looked for a shelter (one or two seen on different maps), but saw none.  Wonder if they have been hit by avalanches in the past and never rebuilt?

I have to believe that MNRP policy is set by someone and that 'someone' usually isn't the ranger who's being jerk-faced

I'm Uberauagaed.  Probably not a skier at all.  Watch the plants, ya'll or we all suffer.
I'm afraid I just don't like these responses even though they are very similar to what I was already thinking.  I have to believe that MNRP policy is set by someone and that 'someone' usually isn't the ranger who's being jerk-faced.  I also suspect they are severely understaffed which may contribute to their poor attitude?  Anyone know anything about whether this might be true?

Still, I have to also believe that Ranger Sue could have...
I can imagine the canopy being a little thick at the bottom there and just going in one directions in the bearing of Frozen Lake/ Burroughs 2 or such to get out of there.

I learned a long time ago that it never pays to offer info to the authorities, especially if you have any inkling you may have broken the law.  It is unfortunate, but being open and honest with the man can often lead to some pretty harsh consequences.  Consider it a cheap lesson.

Agreed and the Park Rangers up there just buddy up to you for ulterior motives....

Although Alta Snob Lake sounds catchy, I resent that you are calling Joedabaker Lake another name. You gotta at least swim in it once before you can claim it!  ;D
I'll give you the Raw Dog though. That has always been an enticing line, must have been an interesting down cli...
Summer pic of the Palisades got me interested in sniffing around for some lines

Even with our enormous snowpack this year, it's already too late. But if anyone wants to come up here in the winter, it offers Sierra like slots

I detect slight exaggeration in my kick&glide performance as I was just keeping up with them for change.  The original goal of reaching the Curtis Ridge was a little too ambitious, by about 3 hours.  Nonetheless, it was a beautiful tour as usual.  Glad they had some good skiing while the snow was a bit too bumpy for my soft fish-scale skis.
Crater Lake has great roadside cornfields, and it's fun to do the ski mountaineer's swagger/stagger in front of the tourons.
Sounds like a good time in a beautiful setting!
Nice work!  Scott is fun, especially if you can hit it right, but the mosquitoes are hideous!  We rode Garfield for the first time this year (west face) in powder and it was a blast!  Crater Lake is a fun area!
Sounds like a great loop Rich.

FYI, I tried to fix your images but you're not using the image URL that ends in .JPG from your host.  The other problem is that you're using the thumbnail feature, which still needs to be fixed.  If you can find that .JPG address for the images, just post them with the IMG tag next to the thumbnail button.  Sorry for the hassle!
Wow, looks really nice in there.  We almost did the Jeff Park Glacier but elected to do Broken Top instead.  It looks like you couldn't go wrong with either choice.  The second picture is $.  I like the idea of camping at Jeff Park, especially for three nights :)
Thanks Joe.  My only regret was not getting "that picture from the bottom looking back up".  By the time we stopped we were under some cliffs and trees and part way around to the east such that you couldn't see anything but our lower tracks.  Wish I had hiked out a ways to get that shot.  I mapped it out tonight on Natnl Geo Topo and was just over 8 miles RT, so not that way out there and we were back to the car in 8hrs.
Hey Marcus, nice to meet you and your crew!  Definitely a great and very uncrowded weekend up there.

Here are a few more pictures:

Coverage at Cathedral Rock

Marcus's group skinning up

Hit Dege with a good crew on Saturday.
More bikers then skiers up there.

That second shot is spot on.
Great to hear that you were able to ski Lassen.  ;)
An enjoyable TR with some great photos.  Once you post the dog images, they steal the show.  ;) The image with the canine wind vanes provides a clear description of the wind velocity.
Very nice TR and photos.  It's been awhile since I've seen a TR on the circumnavigation.  I assume the coverage on Snowdome is excellent.  Figuring out where to go does make a trip enjoyable and each season the routes change based on the weather and snow pack.
Awesome photos!  I really want to ski Broken Top one of these days...
Who are you going to trust? TAY or the Forest Service?
I thought it was mountain bike season.... oops, better clean the pollen off the skis and get after it.

sounds like fun, you broken 80 days yet?
We fasley believed the Forest Service's automatic message saying FR 23 was open.  As of 7/3  9:00pm around mp 30, it is snowbound and didn't look to be opening anytime soon.

This had me rolling on the floor!  Fun to climb through the night with you guys, I won't forget the trip any time soon.
Leeeeather booots!  Kudos!
Great first post/TR.
Welcome to TAY. gfunk.
not sure about the traverse but didn't craig kelly ride both in 24 hrs?
nice try,
i'd love to do this but with some shut eye in between.
Excellent photos.  That part of Oregon is out of this world.  8)

Thanks for the Broken Top update..Nice to have so a great snowpack to start the up-coming winter season!

Looks like fun.  Nice shot of the Sparks and Mr. Chomps too!

Was thinking the same thing.

Was up there a few weeks ago and we saw 3 small-ish bears on the drive out. One just as we were leaving the parking lot, one about a mile later and then another about mile after that.
That was good fun - much better frankly than I was expecting as I succumbed to "volcano slog stupor" on the fairly and depressingly horizontal slog across the tops of 1 and 2 on our way out. There was definitely a point where I was regretting not having pushed to play on the slopes much closer to the parking lot.

Yes, views were awesome the whole way to be sure, but returning the way we'd come would not have yielded much in the way of interesting turns. I'm glad w...
Man that looks good!
Thanks for the recap.
We headed out to Burroughs 3 for the views then came back via the bowl between B3 & B2 (does it have a name?)

We call it Burroughs 2 1/2, a small pocket glacier that hangs in there. The route you did is my favorite.
it was somewhat cool! until we sat in the snow.. and then it was cold
