Marcus... the man! Thanks for the tip!
A great day to be in exploring the hills with blue skies and a sustained cool breeze.  Glad to have joined you, Boot.  By the way, those burgers looked tasty!
Nice one Boot and Brian.
I've been eying that one for some time. Looking at the many options, but man that is a long way out of the hole once you get down there. It would be cool to see those pictures from the bottom looking back up. Great day of hard work! Always wanted to do that thanks for the beta. Yeah the trip from Eleanor side seems like good idea, maybe if you left a car there and went from Sunrise, Skyscraper to Eleanor?

Pic 8: The upper north face/bowl down to the meadow goes.
Pic 9: Beautiful Lodi Creek and the way home.

Twas a beautiful day!
Looks like fun.  Nice shot of the Sparks and Mr. Chomps too!
Pic 4: Third Burroughs and Big R.
Pic 5: North ridge to Grand Park.
Pic 6: Little down climb always fun with a board on the back!
Lowell, nice seeing you and your lovely family on the ridge yesterday. It's great seeing the passion of backcountry skiing being passed down to the younger generation, your son Tom. I think the park now realizes what we where talking about when we said, "get it open" by the 4th of July weekend. It was great seeing all the people enjoying the snow and the beauty of Sunrise at Mt Rainier Naitonal Park. And yes as the snow melts we must be careful of the resource as we also enjoy the...
Thanks Joe.

I understand the Park's concern about resource damage as the snow melts at Sunrise. Right now there's lots of snow, but as it melts (and it will happen soon), skiers and hikers will need to be careful to follow designated routes and avoid damaging the meadows.  I'm confident that the TAY community can help spread the word and model good behavior. If you or anybody else has ideas on how we can help and how we can increase Park Service support, I'm e...
Oh BTW....
We did have a great conversation about the Firnspiegel zone on the mountain too. It was quite the interesting sight, thanks for posting the picture!

You're welcome! 8)

By the time we hit it small moguls were starting to form on the upper ridge side of the half pipe.

Sorry Lowell to digress on your thread...

Such a fine day to be on the Mountain. After a short lunch, just down the aisle from the Skoog family at the Sourdough Ridge Cafe, LR and I decided to extend things over to Third Burroughs. The second shot is heading into the valley (Berkely Park?) paralleling Burroughs Ridge just to north. We ascended the bowl just to right of Second after getting an extra run and avoiding ups and downs of the Ridge.
Encountered some folks heading out to Third after 6pm!

Thanks to the sticky snow sweepers who cleaned out Dege before we skied it.

You're welcome! 8)
Walked the road. It didn't suck that bad thanks to tennis shoes. We talked to a pair who went directly down the creek drainage from the chutes, and they said route finding was difficult, but they were able to stay on skis just below 5k. They also didn't beat us to the car by much.
So did you hike the road up to Cold Springs or bust a move through the trees as a direct approach?
Yes a very nice day indeed! Thanks to the sticky snow sweepers who cleaned out Dege before we skied it. I thought it to be fantastic!
It's nice to be able to skin right from the parking area.

Last year and this season the park has had to open Sunrise without facilities and portable johns. Based on the number of visitors (nearly full upper lot) yesterday there is no reason that they should not have it open when the upper lot is clear. Granted the weather was perfect so there...
well earned turns for June, David
author=Jeff Huber link=topic=21335.msg91305#msg91305 date=1309497419]Jonathan was able to skin from Bunnny Flat the entire way to the summit except for a small portion near the top of the summit pinnacle while I ended up cramponing most of the route.

And excluding the rather substantial portion from about 1k above Helen to Red Banks!
(Still can't believe I even skinned that portion once...)

Some additional pictures here:...
Definitely snow covered, and as I recall the remains of cornices made the top prety steep.
I would have loved to but that one will have to wait until Monday. How did the north face of Fremont look?

I887 people have viewed this thread. I can't wait til 1887 people bump out these chutes. Thanks a lot.

...the # of curious that have read the thread is now up to 2497...an unknown # would know how to get to norse peak in winter or summer...an unknown # would know how to find the gnar chutes #1-5...the first time i strolled through was during a routine summer hike...
That's funny Marcus, I was expecting the same from Silas.  ;)  Thanks for sharing some photos Zap, wondering what the area looked like. Enjoy the rest of your adventurous vacation!
Awesome -- here I was expecting Silas to get the first TR of July and you went and scooped him. :)
Oh yeah, thanks for asking Tobae. This trip was my first time skiing on the new Volkl Amaruq, which I'd just purchased two days earlier (link to older thread with info). I guess I forgot to mention them in this TR, since almost two weeks have passed since the trip before I wrote the TR, and I now have 8 days skiing on them. The new Amaruq certainly started off in style, with...
amazing place, and lucky you.  How do you like your new skis?
Rad dudes!

Sounds like some fun climbing.
Wow! That's some pro level stuff right there. Impressive.
Ripper!

Nicely written Jessie.
AMAZING! I cant believe how much snow is down there still! I made the trip the 2nd week of May and it still looks the same.
I'm ready to go back!!!
Such a good day - super casual start at 7:30 but hey, you need a truckload of faith to get by, and sure enough, we still soc'd for an hour on the summit (thanks to Dave B's girls for the PBR) before heading down a now empty Roman Wall and Coleman G at 4:30 and finding it -- perfect!
Beautiful!

Congrats on the hero corn.

;D
Nicely done and glad you missed the wind too. Two days earlier at Helen Lake I recorded wind gusts on a handheld wind meter of 46MPH. All climbing parties were turning back (including us).
Wild line. That traverse looks scary.Photos I'm sure don't even do justice on the steepness.
Great trip Amar!  Glad we got such great turns & visited Mud Creek Canyon.
- from a firsthand rpt a couple wks back, before the road opened. they said it was 23 miles of skinnin'. talk about a great slog ! Mammoth closes the Fourth; so its b/c for more turns. Saddlebag Lk has good access (if the road's open).
HA!  And, people still don't believe me when I say it is possible to ski/board during the summer in the lower 48, now there's proof!
cool!

Ok.  What is up with your kid having braces?  You and your wife have perfect teeth!!
TT uses the same IMG code that TAY does, FYI.  I quoted your post on TT and copied the first chunk of it.  I also changed the contents of the brackets to this "img width=800" instead of this "img width=1000 height=750", which allows you to control the size of the img you're hotlinking.

Sounds like a good time, with some adventurous equipment shenanigans.  Bummer about the ski!

Three days and two nights on the snow on the flank...
Thanks for sharing Lowell. I'll have to see those two in the mountains, now that they are out of the halls!
Some photos of the blessed event.

Real men wear shorts with boots. Everyone knows this.

Maybe, if I look uphill at the photographer enough, I'll end up being taller:

Stunning gentlemen & congratulations!  Your skill, strength, & will are impressive.  Not that we didn’t know that already!
We were up on Little T the 25th-26th; since others have already described conditions well, I'll just add that the summit was in good condition; we were almost completely on snow until the last 20 vertical feet or so.  We saw a couple of guys scramble the summit in socks; another party of 4 did the whole trip in trail running shoes/light hikers.  Ski boots made the last bit more sporting.  :)

Congratulations Radka!!

Glad to hear you are back out in the mountains on snow!
very cool!  enjoying the circularity
nice overview in that last pic Will
nice one y'all!

I always enjoy your visual documentations too Eric - good eye.
thanks Gregg - like yr stylin' shirt, fit the day well!  Gotta grab religion when you can. And judging by the tracks, looks like a successful deprogramming...
