I like the gloomy summer chute in the third picture.
Impressive amount of skill and commitment. Glad the two of you made it down safely. Loved your write up.
Thanks all it was a great trip! No problem with linking the photo, I lurk a lot on here and I know its nicer to have TR's directly on the page with photos, but after loading and editing it all once for the blog I was out of energy to do it again, so sorry about that...
Kath: Hummel said nice work on Louies report, and that he had been thinking about this one for a while, I guess we just got there first lol

A great adventure. Thanks for the link to the full report.
Good one.... Quite the snow pack up there! Maybe that good have been stage 8 of the BC bike race... I was in the area that day, doing nothing....
Ditto, Zap's peak! He deserves it! :)
Silas, do you have any recent photos of the debris pile from the rock slide? I am curious how it looks now.
I vote to name that Zap's Peak too.

Yeah, howdy, northern neighbor. I checked your profile when I saw the elevation in meters.
5 years from registering to your first TR---don't wait that long to post the next one. ;D
And a fellow knee dropper too! Welcome!
what an incredible effort, you guys are my heros.
nice work Andy!! looks awesome!

I first met Monika in 2006 doing the Watson together with Oyvind, Tim and Joe.
I was whupped bringing up the rear coming out at the parking lot, it was only when we were loading up in our 2nd car at the ski area that I realized Monika was hanging out to climb Shuksan the next morning with some other friends, I couldn't believe it!
Congratulations on this latest traverse and thanks for the great description of what it felt like to be in it.

Minus the one ginormo runnel the NE Couloir looks good to go.

Here is a link of a slide show for our skiing and non-skiing friends and relatives,

On behalf of the fair city, thanks. Penticton does have great sport climbing, though I am a "poseur" in that regard.

sweet! I've drug my dad in there 3 times with skis (or did he drag me?). one more time and I think he'll start refusing to go back ::)
Looks like theres still plenty of snow on deception.

Epic link-up.Let's try it do it in under 24 hours next year.
soupy, is what the Fifth season calls it. heck, at least it snow soup
- north side, sunset pic kinda unique ! I'm skiing the exact opposite, now (until it melts out). the other pic is typically the trail, this yr. a large snowfiled ! I've done it too, but camping is allowed only in campgounds.
I've even seen the ranger check a camper at 8 am.

- keep that a secret "only 10 min. of walking" (just a joke). I'm the only one who goes here on a regular basis. 'someone's gotta do it' (what a bowl, ayyyy)

yaa, Z - that's the wise approach to the mtns, do it on the Mtns terms and not yours (in regards to acclimatizing). nice photos, of my fav. spring B/C spot. I can't remember getting a lotta of turns in there this season, as the road opened May 1 (2 wks late). then May was half storms **. the spot I ski is the last pic - I call it the North wall (the usual ice lake there is called Red Lk), as Black Mtn is to the west. it goes from 40 - 50 degrees and the best talent I've seen in t...
It is pretty much all snow above Royal Lake. Even at the lake there are only a couple of spots for tents that are snow free. This photo shows the basin.
We did plan to ski Deception but ran out of time this trip. I hope the photo update will be useful to others planning their trip.

I'd bet money that Jonathon could skin up to Muir in less than two hours. I wonder if we can find him some Dynafit compatible Uggs.
Steve, although there were a few snowdrifts around 4600 feet, most of the road was clear. I'd guess you'll be fine biking up to about 5000 feet.

Cool TR. I was out that way a few years back around the same time that I was obsessed with Butter Creek near Packwood, WA. Ended up touring as far as Johnson Peak / Lily Basin one day, and by then the hook was very well set.
Penticton is a cool town with amazing rock and a very nice Ramada.

Thanks for the TR; lots o' snow in there. The shot of Deception is very useful.
Are there any bare spots for campng in the upper basin?

Cool guys!
I was wondering how it went for you this weekend. Glad you had a good trip.
Looks like you only had a thin spot to cross through onto the lower slope before crossing the runnel? I had to scramble that section last year.
edit...
Oddly, I took a picture a week prior to riding it, that section was not yet melted out?![]()

Hi - looks like a great day - what was your approach?
We just tried to look on the bright side of things.
Alternative answer: Phelps Creek Trail to Leroy Creek Trail to the (skinny) couloir going up the west face, which took us to the ridge a little northwest of the summit. Then a short and easy walk up to the top of the north face.
On reading Kevin's 2009 NWMJ article again, it's clear he was attempting a four-peak traverse in that story. So perhaps the three-peak traverse was skied some time ago.
Hey- that was me on Rainier on Sunday skinning up along side you with the tele skis. Those shark fins leaving Muir Camp were pretty treacherous. I couldn't believe the # of climbers on the mtn. last weekend. The best were the spandex-wearing speed hikers who made it up to Muir in 2 hrs and the not exactly climber-looking woman with Uggs who flew up the moutain in 3 hrs. I ended up skiing the Nisqually chutes- mainly just get away from the hiking hordes and their tracks. I had some grea...
Kevin Grove and a friend just recently skied a five peak traverse in like 3 hours ;-). Apparently on the same day as the above post....

I don't know if it has been skied in a day before.
This 2009 NWMJ article by Kevin Grove described attempts to ski the route in a day. From the article, you get the impression that it hadn't been done yet at that time:

Nice! I've was sizing this one up for this season too but things never came together.
Way to ski outside the box! I've looked at this line a bunch- nice one!
its certainly been hiked more than a few times.... the Sisters 'marathon' was a pretty common summertime hike/climb among U of Oregon folk when I went to school there in the 90's.
I believe that the marathon has been done (on foot) sub-24 hours including the Sisters, The Husband, Broken Top, and Bachelor.

Yes, I have been lurking for years. This site is inspirational, but to "turn all year" near where we live is but a dream.
Sorry about the meterage business. We were travelling light and I left the Suunto manual at home!
A link to more pictures may appear sometime soon, to inspire other lurkers to head up to Goat Rocks.

Road was impassable about 2 miles below the Cold Springs campground. The snowdrifts weren't that big (I'd guess you could get over them with a 4WD and they will melt quickly) but there are quite a few downed trees along the way, some of which are pretty large, so until the forest service removes them, it will require some hiking.

Skied the north face of Mt Maude on Sunday. Went up the west face and out via Ice Lakes. The snow on the north face wasn't quite soft enough to smooth out all the ripples, but it was still a fun ski. There were huge runnels on the lower half and plenty of rocks falling along the traverse (which, for that reason, we didn't take). The snow was well consolidated on all aspects--we...
amazing photos as always Jim! did you get a view of Blanca Lake, Columbia Glacier, Kyes? I was wondering if that might still be a worthwhile ski this summer given the ample snowpack still up high.
