Fun to meet you and follow your out track.  It got exciting but skied well!  :)
Red Mt in the Commonwealth basin????? Thanks.
We found similar conditions on Lichtenberg, and did not attempt gaining the summit ridge because of large spatial variability.  The pit we dug at 5200' showed no deep slab issues but we were worried about pocket wind slabs, as the terrain would go from ~12"-18" powder to scraped clean frozen solid 2" crust (at which point ski crampons would have been desirable).

Thanks for the report. I love the decision-making and rationale. With choices like that you're always gonna live to eat another day!
Red was super fun today - easy turns and face shots. Felt like we hit the conditions jackpot.

Thanks to the first crew of three that broke trail.
More good news--they are getting closer to Cheakamus. Read more and see Google Earth images of their progress to date and plans for tomorrow at their blog at
pepper jack mac n cheese, one evening I was starving.
I was so happy they were still open

It is on my to do list to ski all the little operating ski areas in WA, and then try and get some of the extinct ones (a much more challenging task) congrats on the nice string.
Sorry to post these so late.  Just wanted to thank you again for the excellent skin trail out and it was a mighty pleasure to meet Silas Wild in the FLESH!

Here's a couple of photos I took of your group.

Looks like another beautiful day in the ONP!
Dang rain at high elevations! At least it was a beautiful day up there today.
Yeah, we started out from Paradise today going up Mazama; ice-topped runnels, new snow blow into lee edges of gulleys; crust breakable by a heavy guy in boots, but not with skis (altho variable in strength and depth); had a nice picnic :-)
No prob. Yeah I was expecting a rain crust, but not all the way to 6000ft, haha. Hopefully someone will report some good stuff somewhere on here soon, so I can go ride that ;D Good luck on the pow hunting!
!@#$ snow........!@#$ A
Thanks for the info, though.  Hopefully we fared better up here in the convergence.
No need to worry, sheep are herbivores. :D

It has been said that this site doesn't cater to wolves, but just in case:  Rhodies is the 468th exit before N Bend, take a right and it is in the gas station on the right.

Sorry JD
Way to ruin it for all of us. Rhoadies is my secret stash! :->
Viva el Karl Fardman!
Fun place.  It was open in January when  Debbie & I hit it on a long-weekend tour of Badger Mt, Loup Loup, and Echo Valley.

I don't think they'll mind that you "poached".  Congrats on 185!

Here's an "in season" shot for interested viewers:
^^^^^ Thanks a lot for the info John. LOL on the wishy washy, just comes with the PNW weather and conditions. I too realize there are no givens, yet your anectdote is very valuable and those tend to have more truth then not.

Clearly like most of our skiing, better when the cooler temps are blowing through since the low start point.

Thanks again!!

Hi John. We followed Glenn's track from GJ out to that first switchback at Radio Mt, (much appreciated btw...) then struck off through the forest for Nordic Pass trying to contour the most efficient track possible. If you ended up in ours, I'm glad if it served you well. I'm just sorry to not have met you as I've heard good things. As you mentioned, the wind-packed densi...

Could you narrow the location down a little????

Spectacular photo Lowell. Thanks for sharing it. For clarity, here's our route:

It has a similar shape to Magic Mtn/Yawning Glacier! (Same general layout, with couloirs, cols, basins in the same places).
It is a fun place.  First turns for the month.  ;)

Thanks for the great TR and specifics. That looks like a great time. I have no real good info about skiing in that area but am sure their must be some really good skiing.

Question - generally drier snow and cooler temps then the crest (Sno Pass) and better weather vis too out that way?????

Hi Griff,
It can be very fun up there, indeed.  Only ca...

So...Gordy climbed our ski route, not that deep cleft on Mantis that faces a little bit more easterly?  (Which looks pretty cool, by the way--Scurlock has a nice shot of it somewhere.)

Yes.

Here is a photo taken from Colonial Peak in April 1979:

Yearg!

Looks like we were in the wrong place at the right time.  Glad you had a good ski....

Wish I would have thought to tell you about the NE rib of 5703' run last week.  It is a good safe one during high hazard.  Don't give up on the area!  I can send you some maps prior to you heading in that direction.

Nice pics, John.  You enjoyed our track from Grand Junction to near the 1st switchback in the Radio Mtn cat track.  We skied that to the radio towers(inactive?) and their nice views.  We've got a Tuesday thing going until I undergo an ankle replacement(!) procedure in April.  Feel invited if you don't mind a couple of dogs.

Thanks for the track, Glenn....

yeah, we definitely followed a single persons track out.  It gave us some direction, and now we know to start the skin up a bit further down the valley.
Thanks for the words of support.  I've posted an account of what happened in the Weak Layers forum.  Please read - I and my partners welcome any and all input no matter how critical as long as the intent is to educate.

Outstanding work and the embodiment of the ski mountaineering spirit. I know well that time frame of the go-no go, good choice.
The team is suffering the vagaries of weather. Read more at the blog.
FWIW, I was there as well with a Pro Guiding Servive AIARE 1 class.  We also dug pits on the Kendal Stump ridge, on the East aspect, 30 deg, at 4650'.  The snowpack was right side up except for a thin layer approximately 20-25cm down that we penetrated on foot and ski - it was Fist above and below, but 4 Finger to 1 Finger in the layer.  In our pits we consistently (6 CT and DT tests) had CT with Moderate results, Q3, 35cm down on a thin (1cm) layer of mixed graupel and deformed/fragmented;...

Has anybody else found good conditions on that ridge before, or mostly ski the basin?
J

Been up the Bow a couple of times. We skied the ridge once because conditions were sketchy, and I remember it being pretty fun. I remember a pillow line below it somewhere. And one time we dropped to the Jim Hill valley from the summit of the Bow. Steep trees and some...
Sorry to hear Will.  Glad you came out relatively unscathed.

Nice TR John!  Yes, we were skiing a bit lower, and the snow on Sunday was thickening up!

Sorry we didn't make it your way Kevin.  Something out of ventilator parking was the consensus of the day thinking a shorter more direct approach might be beneficial with all the new snow.
Sounds like folks had a good time up there yoyoing!
Next time...
Fun looking natural half-pipe!  You all going to the snowbash PDX?  Be nice to meet some more folks in Portland.
