I'm pretty sure he'd go rock climbing.

He'd climb 5.12 in the cold without a rope!

Nice work Scott!
Might as well as a little spice to this report.  Party consisted of one mountaineer, two skiers, and a splitter.  Guess who brought the Scooby snacks?

This was my first winter camping experience and I will say that when that extra heavy pack was initially put on I was immediately playing head games with myself.  That was a mental thing I dealt with the whole time I was wearing it.  I’m probably in the super lightweight class, so my pack was easily more than a third...

New back country mantra... what would john plotz do? Good thing that includes a hot cup of coffee!

Our descent was actually very smooth sailing. Only side step on the other side of the creek required any side-stepping. Cool area.
They are above the Stave Glacier waiting for the weather to clear. The blog has a photo of the map or you can see it here:

It was easier to have that bootpack than to make our own. FWIW we chose the left fork  :)

I wasted a good while and some calories exploring whether there was a reasonable skinnable route to the left (not really, at least at the level of the step). Have gone to the right on a few prior trips and actually managed to reasonably skin on one powder-filled outing, but the other times still ended up booting, so I think the direct line that you took there is now my choice. Descent route is a...
It was! Unfortunately I think you'll have to track down one of the handful of members and befriend them. They don't appear to have an Internet presence...

Fantastic!

Coffee makes those long days go by easy..

Thanks guys. That is a pretty nice area. I agree, a bit far for a day trip.

That looks idyllic.  How does one gain access/permission/key for cabin usage?
Nice work.  Always wanted to get back in that area.  The tracks to stuart were from this past weekend.  They went in saturday and were still in there when we came out sunday night. That snow from saturday night skied great on sunday.
Wow, that is incredible! Nice injection of humor to go along with a stunning TR, too Ryan.
Awesome.

I always knew you would ride those solo.
The black & white pics in fading light are wicked, hope you don't mind me  re-posting this one
Way to go Scott. Looks like a lot better conditions then when we were there last.

I'd like to go pick off a few more lines up there, but I think I'd want to camp...day trips up there are pretty brutal
Fantastic!

Coffee makes those long days go by easy.  Too bad about the battery, but somethings got to keep you on your toes :)
Ass kicking day Scott!  Well done!
It's always an adventure.
Amazing in every way! Thanks once again Ryan.

Bummer about your arm. get strong quick.
A NW slope up/down to Pratt Lake and out on the trail was one option we considered, but skiing was too good to pass a 2nd run down the N slope and then the S.  Maybe the next time.
you guys are amazing !!
Exquisite piece of work gentleman.  Dave and I missed you Ryan on the Duffy.  Always bring your passport to Bham!!  Looking forward to having you back again this summer.
Did you guys ski the NW slope down to the unnamed lake or the North slope?  I have never skied the north down to the Tuscohatchies.  The NW slope is pretty cool, though a bit of a double fall line.  A beautiful exploration none the less.
Way to get it guys!  Looks yummy.  Hope you heal quick Ryan!
great writeup - those b&w images with blurry skiiers are spooky!
It was awesome skiing that day! We couldn't leave without getting one more run!

Here's a picture of Kenji and Aki.
Excellent photos.. line and writing. Not a bad way to be knocked off the horse.

Thanks for your skin track and the nice bucket-sized boot prints over the Lichtenstep that we followed. You guys have clearly been there before.

Actually, we blindly guessed correctly. Sorry for the mess of a bootpack, but my partner and i disagreed on the best approach :).

I'm incredibly envious of the people who have places up there. About that lott...
A descent like this is just an impressive physical achievement until it is interpreted by you. Then it becomes a vibrant mural. I'm not exaggerating. Well written, again...

Heal up!  We need to climb. Screw skiing, for now anyways...
great write-up! and what an amazing line!
Hope the surgery goes smoothly and you recover quickly.
Awesome TR, Ryan.
Hope your arm is doing well.
A great trip and photos. Good save on the fall.  ;)
Holy crap -- hell of a day Ryan.  Sorry to hear about your arm, though it sounds like maybe it saved your knee?  Heal up quick.
Awesome read; heal up for the spring/summer season!

Traverse the coast has just posted a story from Ryan's GF about their trip planning process. I didn't know this, but she'll be joining them for about six weeks.
Way to go bringing the younger generation into the fold! Twenty years from now, we'll need all the young friends we can get to help push our walkers up to the top of the hill and strap us into our skis and point them downhill for us.
What a day!

was getting over into that basin straightforward? i've wondered if there were required shenanigans, but i gather you guys had no problems?

there is a little up and down to get to the co. glacier from holden lake but it's not tricky.  we took a less direct low line once on the glacier to work a low angle ramp system but there are lots of options.&n...

Any concern about crevasses?  Close calls?

Cracks were filled in well and with a stiff snow surface, I didn't ever feel iffy. We had a 35 m 7mm cord, 1 ice screw, and materials for a guarda hitch and haul. I know the rescue bizness, so ethan the crevasse poodle went first. :-)

Did you notice all the craters from the s__t show of a descent I had, not recognizing the rolls in the flat light!  We tried waiting, too, to no avail.
Since the snow under the forest was soft we enjoyed the luge also.  Good to know that double poling the flats is possible so long as a well packed snowshoe trail exists.  If we could only teach snowshoers to go straight, now!
I think maybe we chatted for a minute?  I was the solo guy on Tye.  Your route out sounds familiar.  I hope you didn't get sucked into my janky skin track.  I got a little lost wandering around in the cloud.  That wasn't my intended route out, but was a good one nonetheless.  Fun day!

Uhh, is Mt.Yotie by Clara Lake?  I'm confused by your post Jamie!

My vote for "Joke of the Year!" thus far on this here site.....

Cool looking terrain jtack.  Looks like skiing in somebody's steep yard in Virginia or New York or something.

Love it !  Go forth..........
Finely managed to wrestle a few pictures on to this trip report.  The skiing was really quite good, and made all the more fun by the fact that we were in such an exotic place for us, skiing in a birch forest was the best.

Visibility was not much, but the trees helped.

Thanks for the reply. Luckily my skiing there this month starts on Saturday. If the forecast holds, up most tracks will be covered by then. Because the  bottom of the trail out is so low, I was wondering about that. With all that use, I'm sure it's a luge run.
Great use of a high pressure day!
