thanks for paving the way, kyle.
Nice report.

When I look at this picture of Witches Tower, I wonder what the lichen on the tower signifies.

Does the sharp transition from almost-no-lichen (below) to lots-of-lichen (above) indicate a massive amount of rock fall? Or does it mark the line of a not-so-long-extinct glacier? To my eye, the latter seems more likely.

Either alterna...
John,
nice effort - good you seized the opportunity!
Additional benefit was we had the entire mountain to ourselves, minus a few parties sleeping in their tents. The best nighttime corn I have ever skied.
We all see that 3rd picture and say "I've done that."  It's like that Pemco "skis in the rain guy" ad.  But this is "walks uphill to ski in the rain guy".

My poles made it into your summit shot, I think.

..and the top of one of my ski bases! Haha!

Bet the timing made for a really nice alternative to the regular "summit at 1 pm" schtick. Sometimes skiing in the dark is really fun!
heck of a trip you two! Makes me proud to be a Cascadian....
Love the 3rd picture. PNW.

Fun times Friday night.  We went back on Saturday.  The route up the PCT and up the rib between streams was way nicer (and somewhat shorter) than the road, and we got an extra est. 250' of skiing on the descent.

i will test this route tomorrow after nopostholio investigates today, thanks steve.

Shreddar, I think we chatted for a while at the prow. And I think I see my party of two stopped for a water/sunblock break in the second picture! I was wondering what that chopper was up to. Kyle and I found a slightly less dubious connection to glacier basin. One of a handful of dirt/grass skinning moments before the basin. It was our first trip to this side of the mountain as well, and it turned into an awesome day for a ski!

That's our friend Linsey there! Good that you were able to team up with her.

She said she found a Black Diamond shovel on Fryingpan Glacier around 7000/8000 ft. If it's yours, message me and I will connect you with Linsey. She doesn't have a TAY account so I am posting on her behalf.
I thought you were fast in trail running shoes, but this is really pushing it on rubber tires and skis, Andy!  Nice day!
Looks like some Rampart Lakes/Ridge terrain accessed via the Laura Backdoor. Sound about right?
It was indeed a great day to ski the SW chutes of Mount Adams. Excellent conditions. it was my first time on Adams and I can say that I've never skied something quite like the SW chutes. Phenomenal!

We dropped a little too low and had to track back up to make the lip you describe in your TR. I think we might have found and followed your skin track there. Thanks! :)

Great pictures! I was up there on Saturday also, but did not see your party (or the UFO).  What time where you at the Prow?  I was up there from about 1:30-2:00.
Very nice, looks like it was a beautiful evening. Can't imagine there were too many people up skiing a mountain across the ol' US of A that night, how cool is that.
Great TR! Spot on with the description of the view, I’m still shell shocked from it.  Truly amazing and indescribable .
Yes it was.  You looked like you'd earned it.
John/Scott, as Mike noted, we eyed your line all the way to the top of the pass, all the more impressive in real life.  A great ski, for me, thanks to the consummate fun hog (Mike) I was lured down Aasguard, and there was a spot or two that made me pucker just a little, but as is always the case so exciting to have done it, not to mention the added bonus, of stepping of on the trail at the lake! A few shots of the Fun hog in his element!

Thanks for a great day of new views and slopes Tim!

Just amazing pictures, thank you!!
Great TR Amar!  I had a strong feeling you would be doing Little T soon after reading our TR.

I believe the solo women you met up there was Linsey!
The low route also has by far the least crevasse hazard of any of the 3 approach routes to Little T. For climbers on foot, though, the low route makes little sense since it is longer and involves a descent of 900 ft on the way in and the same climb on the way back. But it is a wonderful ski route, actually it feels like a very scenic ski tour near Paradise which fortuitously (and perhaps a bit circuitously) delivers the skier all the way up to the highest snows of...

Chuck, was it you that gave me and my buddy an Alaskan Summer Ale at about 7:45 as we trudged by your car? If so, it was greatly appreciated.

Great day to be out skiing!
WOW, you had a long/fast day !  ;)
Great TR and the photos were well done.  Toilet worker delivery video. !  ;)
one more mission this week then it is volcano season for a day.

Which way to Little Tahoma? Some thoughts on approach routes:

The low route from Paradise to Little T described above appears in no published source as far as I know. The several published Rainier and Cascades climbing guidebooks which include Little Tahoma (Beckey, Van Steen, Gauthier, Smoot) list only the the most popular route from Fryingpan Creek (via Summerland and Fryingpan Glacier to the Whitman) and also the high route from Paradise (or from Camp Muir) which crosses the heavil...
I'm sorry I missed the Solstice night party, but even the next day it sure was still lively up there. Silver Peak simply refuses to give up the "most popular place" title this year.

Good running into a few new folks (Ben and Scott - thanks for the picture... looks like yours came out quite nicely, too ;-)

It was a glorious day - ran into a few non-skiers... looks like everyone wanted to take advantage of the short sunny window.

It sure was baking u...

Thanks for posting Mike.

John I hope you noticed the title to this trip report is a tip of the hat to you and Scott.  We talked about your triple couloir ski on our walk up - and shuddered :)

Nice but still needing a pic of Jamie packing skis on...
Lots of locals in action!  Thanks for posting Mike.  And way to explore the choss Sol and Ryan.  I've always wondered about Witches Tower.  I never would have guessed it was 6 pitches!
Nice but still needing a pic of Jamie packing skis on his shoulder to make me feel totally inadequate.  Way to get after it, Sol and Ryan!  That's not my route up Witches Tower.
Chuck, a very fun trip!  You forgot to mention the fun of finding the obvious bootpack out of the Squak... still not sure how to get out of there gracefully.

CascadeClimber, read your blog entry, how funny, overheard you talking about hashtags as I was puffing my way to the summit...

Mike,

Cool TR and photos.  Such a fun area you have to play in!

That's myself and partner Ryan Daudistel on The Witches Tower.

Thank for posting those shots!!

We made the first ascent of a line that goes through the wild flake roof and then the bigger roof above. 6 pitches, 5.10 C1 for now, it's prepped to go free, likely 5.11+/12-. The close up of us is the 2nd pitch, splitter thin hands, onsight free at 5.10-.

Aww, so close to meeting the legend.

Ha!

I suppose if I were more social.

That's my line.

By the way, we liked your skis.

Thanks! I really, really like them. Not that I'm a ski expert, but they are certainly the best...

Thanks! There's something cool about the upper edge of the sluffs that kept catching my eye. It's a little like the main terminal roof at DIA....
Few more pics from Solstice - Skied even nicer next day after everyone graciously groomed the runnels
I should have mentioned the skitters were out in force below 7500 feet, so bring lots of deet and/or nets.

The north side looks great if you have the time (I did not). Some of the West Rim Drive peaks still look to be skiable too.

MtnPavlas, thanks for the comment-- the quality of pics totally depends on how inspired I am to pull the SLR out of my pack! (The iPhone 5 performs admirably for its size, but leaves much to be desired in terms of control.)

My poles made it into your summit shot, I think. The skiing might not have been optimal, but it was infinitely better than downslogging in knee-deep slush.

My TR is here:

Thanks for the timely report and pics..  Got some free time so I just might head down there now that I know there is still enough snow (plus we could get new snow above 7k this week) that is, if we ever get fair weather again.  How were the 'skitters?

That sluff photo is excellent!

My thoughts exactly - great textbook shot.
