Great report.  We camped in that basin last September and I was wondering if anyone ever skied up there - looked like some nice slopes for it.  Should have known that you guys would sniff it out!
Nice line. I need to find that one!
Split Board? Too slow in transition for those trying to form a new government. I think they knew that to free themselves from the shackles of British tyranny, they needed to free their heels.

While my times on the Russell have only been in the first month after the Mowich Lake TH opened,  I'd say that glacier is safe to ski solo. There are some crevasses on the far eastern aspect as it drops down towards the Carbon but on the aspect that gets skied heading down towards Echo...
Real fun trip Stoudema.  It's always good when reality beats expectation.  Next time we need to save some time to ski that line above the tarn.  I think I will drag along the whippet, helmet, and crampons as I felt a little neck-ed on that steep pitch.  Although, with my pack hanging open (the first picture) who knows where they would have ended up.

Sure beat the heck out of Hood south side.  Thanks

Somewhat related question for everyone: in the hideous boulder field there is a distinct "step".  The cairns lead to a wet bedrock step that is a bit treacherous to descend with skis on back.  I tried a different way up the step while going uphill that turned downright dangerous for 2 moves.  The question is, if you stay in the woods can you climb easily above this step and enter the...

WAS HOPING FOR A MOSQUITO QUANTITY/ISSUE REPORT...

No mosquitos on June 30 that I recall.

Haven't skied the Russell myself, but gazed upon it in several Septembers/Octobers.

Charlie: love those photos. The black/white plus the season gives them a great mix of rough and smooth textures.
The shadow in the second pix looks kinda like a humpback salmon, and he's about to eat the poor subpixel climbers.  ;)
Nice TR and the photos of the headwall and worms were great.  ;)
pretty sure they would have been dirt-baggers ~ if only on principal..
Yes, great report.  Will be heading up there this weekend, hope the lower continuous holds out.
that second shot..  nice layout of the toes of those glaziers..    8)
Great report, wolfs.
Thanks.
I think Jefferson would've been quite taken with the mechanical elegance and efficiency of the early Low Tech binding system.

Patrick Henry?

Freeheeler!

Jake - I'd send my mom up the Flett, no problem. Look for cracks, but the Flett (comes down from Observation Rock) is really more of a remnant.

Haven't skied the Russell myself, but gazed upon it in several Septembers/Octobers. Avoid any steep rollover, and you're apt to be...
Wow what a great area!  Thanks for the report and photos.
The downed trees are from a monster avalanche that occured sometime in the spring of 2012 and caused the trail to be closed all summer.  We walked by those downed trees on Labor Day 2012 and there was still 40' of snow covering the creek.  Also, on that weekend we tried climbing the Kautz and realized the further climbers left you get the worse the rockfall is.  Just stay east once you gain the alpine.
It seems to me that the Founding Fathers would have been splitboarders, based on the general new, cool and groovy nature of the nation emerging in opposition to the status quo.
Obviously,  later, once they made their decision as young wippersnappers would they discover the inherent problem which plagues both splitboarding and American democracy: the lack of separation of the powers. HA HA Ha

On a different note, are Flett & the Russel active, or can they be solo skiied w...

Any tricks or best times for driving up through notorious Seattle traffic  coming up from Portland, Oregon?

Best bet is between 10 AM and 3 PM.

Or during the dark hours of summer,  say 9 PM to 6 AM.

No mosquitos anytime.   ;)
Thanks on that pass information---

Thanks for your report.

NO 'SKITTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  PERFECT
NW Forest Pass is good there.
Also, will the NW Forest Pass suffice or does one need to pick up a permit away from the trail head somewhere (where is that 'somewhere'?).

Thanks in advance.
If I can get a mosquito report, I might make the drive from Bend this weekend....
Thanks Wolfs for the affirmation, it looked knarly lookers left & mellow & stagnant on the right.
And BC'...wow, you wouldn't want to be there if the avi poured off the slopes above/ left/ right of the falls. Powerful stuff.
Aaaa, I'm jealous.

I tried hard to find a partner to go July 1 and 2 but had no luck.  It's looking good.  I might miss the squak this year.  Hopefully I'll get it next year.
Nice work gary and Jeff!  Good choice too :)

He must have made the rounds more than once . . . we saw him in the 4th crossing lot too!
Ran into Silas as we were heading up from 4th crossing he stopped to say hello this  morning.  He was leaving after 9 straight days of skiing and sleeping in his car. I almost didn't recognize him because he was so dark brown and his lips were burnt beyond bad. He looked like a escapee from devils island.
Kudos for a job well done ! His info was top notch .
Director of Fun hard at work.
Indeed Paradise Glacier might be of the few places remaining (if not the only one) skinnable directly from car.  Adding a picture of Silas and his crew (Art, Carl and his wife) skiing a nice line.  Thanks for letting me tag along!
Fixed it! Sorry haha, my bad.
Anyway, yeah, hoping to make 4th of july ski tours a tradition. I did one last year too. It's a great way to kick off summer right.
The first photo and comment "blitzed by blow-down before the falls" looks like it could be avalanche debris.
great write up!  very nice to meet y'all on the mountain that weekend.
Re: the non glacier terrain I went up one of those snow lobes in foggy disorientation about 5 years ago. Probably the one just one rib to the W of the correct snowfield but walled off from it. Was indeed steep, getting steeper, couldn't skin. Along the way there were rocks all over the snow, hmmm. Popping up out of fog in what I then knew to be Not The Turtle I could see why, the whole snowfield is headwalled by crazily unstable choss of the disintegrating Wapowety Cleaver. On way back down...
Impressive first post  :)
Nice work.
Welcome to TAY  :)
Looks great!--as per my usual question:  How were the mosquitoes?
Wonderfull pictures, and report, thanks.
I agree with Zap - your full trip report was a great read!  And you have some beautiful pictures of the sunrise; wow.  Summiting Rainier is currently so far out of my skill/fitness level that it hasn't really made it onto my "must-ski" list yet, but your trip report is the first time when I've really felt a true hankering to get up onto it.  Thanks for sharing.
Super cool trip!  I would love to do that some day.  Love the self-paced format overlayed onto the topo map. (didn't get to hear the music due to lack of speakers).

We made our way up to Panorama point by about 8:30, watching a few people ski past along the way.  (Probably Kintvt and his friend, haha!).

And her friend!  But yep, that was us; I remember seeing you two on the way up.

Agreed, the transition to the summer trail up to Panorama Point was a little sketchy.   Nice touch with the brats for the...
Jim,

The photos and TR are great BUT I noticed Eric was skiing without a hat and getting a red spot on his head. Also, Eric is still on his Scarpa’s. I thought he was getting “light” boots. I know-we have the same big feet and boots. He skis like the wind. ;D
You wrote a great TR and photos.  ;)
a couple shots of the author...

the picture of the milky way is over the top !

Thanks!  It was really exciting that it turned out well.  We happened to have stashed our gear in a way that created a great silhouette, and the mesh-topped tent made for a neat effect with the stars.
The sky in that first picture is amazing!
runningclouds, I took my Canon S90 on this climb, but on easier trips or when I'm feeling up to it I use a Sony NEX-7. On snow with the S90 I normally shoot RAW, program +1/3, then run them through Photoshop.
