The line you saw is the shadow of the mountain. Or more specifically, it's the edge of the three-dimensional shadow of the mountain as it is cast through the air. If you trace it back, it will lead directly to the summit (and then the sun beyond that).

Neat!  Thanks for the information!
It was a hoot, one might say.

Hoot of a coot ! As I might say
Nice, looks like a very enjoyable way to do it.

Here's a similar effect I saw at sunset from the east side of Shasta:
If you don't mind my asking: what camera did you use?
Great pictures, they brought back many fond memories skiing this route. Thanks.
WOW-- looks like great conditions.  Awesome photos!!!!!!!!!!!!
We said hello to you guys as you were heading out from White River Campground and I've been looking forward to seeing your trip report. Sounds like you had a great time!
Perhaps the sleds were for the exciting new sport known a "adventure sledging", hauling loads through remote snow covered terrain while channeling the spirit of Robert Falcon Scott and his last adventure on the ice of Antarctica...
Nice to see Voile getting in the game, and they’re only about half a pound or so off the benchmark of three pounds per pair, so about the same price and weight as an econo model like the 2013-14 Hagan X-Lite.  But those dimensions is kind of ridiculous.  Even compared to the X-Lite, although the waist is off by only 1mm, the tip is 10mm narrower, and the tail is 6mm narrower.  That’s even skinnier than the old Atomic MX:20.  I know that all these dimensions might seem equally...

The pincers were still locked on his boots as the skis went flying into the crevasse.

ugh.  Scary.
Great report.  I enjoyed every word.  Thanks for the gear comparison.  I ponder the cost per ounce question quite frequently and I have my eye on the new Voile ski as a summer carry ski.  Here is a link.  http://www.voile.com/voile-skis/voile-wasatch-speed-project-skis-2013-2014.html
If it were available for purchase right now I would have it.

I've pondered lighter boots too (I use the Scarpa F1).  I ordered a pair of the F1 race model but sent it back because of the exposed...
Lowell I really like the look of that carry system.  That same "trail" turned my gray boot cuffs brown about a month ago, even after arraigning the skis together vertically on the back of the pack.

Somewhat related question for everyone: in the hideous boulder field there is a distinct "step".  The cairns lead to a wet bedrock step that is a bit treacherous to descend with skis on back.  I tried a different way up the step while going uphill that turned downright d...

like I did to Mike on our Dragontail ski.

It didn't hurt :)
I like that your modified carry prevents tree debris from falling into your boots.  I have two daypacks that I use, both of which allow carrying the boots inside the pack.  A benefit of smaller feet maybe.

Thanks for the report.  On the same weekend I found suncups on the Lyman and Spider Glaciers below 6500'.  I found them easier to ski in a telemark stance than two footed.
Great photos!

Did you ski the north face of the NW ridge? Is that the smooth face between the Adams Glacier and the NW Ridge?
Thanks for that, Mike! That picture at the pass is one of the best I have seen this year! Kudos to both of you for getting the goods!   :)
Looks like you guys had a fun day Dan, glad you got to ski that line before it melted out.  :D

Sounds like the Obstruction Pt road still holds quite a bit of snow on the switchback climb near Eagle Pt. The Park doesn't have any plans to plow at all this summer, so the best chance for skiing Elk Mountain is to make the hike from Deer Park...................

A most succinct report, nice, picture.

How's the coverage low down on the trail?

The plan was to park at 4th Crossing and skin up from there; however, the heli sorties put the kabosh on that.  So, we toured up from Paradise through Golden Gate.  We did exit via 4th Crossing and walked the road back to Paradise.  There is on...

Very nice!  Looks like like a real gem for sure...however, were you able to be with out 'skitters once at camp?

If one were to be driving from Bend, Oregon, got any ideas as to the best way to drive there?

We camped at around 8,000' on the lower Adams Glacier, no skeeters there.

As far as access, I'm pretty sure you can continue...

Things lined up nicely in terms of partner, weather, etc to head up the valley from Hannegan trail head and ski Ruth. Trail was clear to abt 1/2 mile below pass; we skinned on at the campsite, then booted up to N. side of 5900 foot knoll. Steep exposed traverse around to E. side on knoll, then a hero skin on up to 7100 foot summit. Remarkable views of N. face Shuksan, as well as Nooksac...
I've ripped out Dynafit toes before, as have many others (there's a thread on TGR that recounts a number of incidents similar to your friend's, with some degree of technical discussion I believe).  When I blew out my binding (not both, just one), I too watched as the ski shot off downhill, leaving me with the toe still locked to my boot, screws dangling.  Scary stuff for sure.  What year/model bindings?  What skis?  Quality of wood in the skis was probably...
Skier who took a tumble was on my rope for the ascent.  The fall happened when both of his Dynafit toe bindings ripped out - ten screws!  The pincers were still locked on his boots as the skis went flying into the crevasse.  Shocking to think his knees are stronger than 10 screws.  I'll try to dig up a photo of the toe pieces.  Has anyone else ever ripped out Dynafit binding?  ???

It was a scary one to watch especially since it was a friend and some...
Dan that looks like a great spot, maybe not low hanging fruit, but not bad. thanks for the post
Mike, so sorry to miss such a great trip, that picture of Chester walking through the Glacier lily's in the in the meadow is fantastic, I have never been anyplace that has a more spectacular show of them than Spider Meadow. Thanks for the pictures, and the post.
Nice report.  I can see the whole thing in my mind.
Wonderful TR and photos.  ;)

Another Top Shelf report Mike! Thanks! I too had my alone time in the Lyman basin a few years ago  and value that experience highly.
great TR. That is such a beautiful place. Have hiked/run it during the high hunt season so have a hard time imagining it deserted. Got to try it with skis.
Nice trip Mike (& Chester!), I'm hoping to get some more carry-able gear by next year, maybe chase you guys up there.

there some good trad at smith, but it's not granite.  it takes skill, ingenuity, and charm to place the gear.  Qualities which some washingtonians lack  ;D

When I placed gear at Smith Rocks I think I was a Californian. I certainly had charm back then before I got all old and water logged. :'(

Illumination rock as requested - 730 pm this evening

Best looking picture I've ever seen of that loose, crumbly rock!
Yea,  awesome terrain out here.  Takes a little work to get to some of it, and you definitely know about that.  But what we did today is probably among the most accessible alpine backcountry skiing locations in the state.  It's literally 1.5 miles from the road to Victor Pass where innumerable options unfold.
Looks like great local terrain.  I'll have to get out to the peninsula one of these springs.  Nice pics!
Great to meet you guys up there! And thanks for scraping the slush out of the coulior to the summit! Congrats on the final summit - especially in two days!

Anyone know of a splitboard as light as those Hagan skis?? Kyle??

This was my last summit of WA volcanoes over 10k (still gotta go back and ride some of them, though). I'll put up a separate post with links to pics.
Sweet Trip Mike!

I wanna come next time  :)
What a great way to finally finish up our volcano quest!
(Now we can just ski only the places we really want to ski...)

Here's our route overview:

This elevation profile conveys very well the initially flat hiking trail, then the switchbacks, after that the mainly flat and rolling on-ski ap...

... that could be used to ACTUALLY CONTROL what the hell was going to happen once you got going really fast on snow?

You must have different skis than me then.  I've never been accused of control while on mine.
Four guys with sleds ... would not have believed you but you have photographic evidence.

Did you point out to them that they had invented these things called skis ... happened about, I dunno, a couple thousand years ago ... that could be used to ACTUALLY CONTROL what the hell was going to happen once you got going really fast on snow?

NT and I skied up to Illumination rock for some rock shennanigans before skiing back to T-line.

Snow was variable but with a smooth surface, making for fun skiing from 9,000'.  Coverage remains intact to the parking lot.

I was glad to see a set of beautiful tracks on the upper white river glacier.  High-five to whoever laid it down in such good style.

Wow... I saw the same Family last weekend.

Was the line still open Gary and Jeff skied followed by you... the narrow line on the East side of the bowl?

Here's a shot of the line Jeff and I skied a few weeks ago taken on Saturday, it has several feet less snow and is considerably narrower than when we went down it. I didn't look at the m...
that was a fun day my friend and the kids were awesome booting up those chutes.
thank you for the cinematography on the final lap!
the lot 4 parking area at sunrise was supreme and allowed skinning right from truck.
nice capture of the scary fox on the Kodachrome camera, the wildlife were spooked ::)

lets get the gang together again

Dan: Nice pic! I believe that is the same batch of goats.

Here's a link to more photos, it was a very picturesque day.  You may notice two additional goats.  One is the typical breed.  Another "kid" likes to wear a blue hat and is 5 years old.  You may also notice he likes chocolate.  He makes me proud :)

Thanks Doug,

I wasn't sure if the photos were of that very spot.  I might be jumping rocks a bit, but I think I'll give it a try.

Dan
Dan: Nice pic! I believe that is the same batch of goats. Great shot by Gary by the way taken at about the same time I took mine looking east. I was not able to see the top of the chute when I was out due to fog but as you can see in my first pic the the lower half is melting out. Worth a look though....
