We had no problem accessing Mill Valley today after skinning up Double Diamond. Good skiing back there, soft powder all the way down. Coverage is a little spotty for lift operations (some still open creeks and brush) but plenty adequate for touring. Nice to see winter finally arrive!!!
Backside was "hard closed" today - no access into Mill Valley while the resort ran the cats around and assessed the conditions.
I wouldn't be surprised to see it lift-served as early as tomorrow - they'll keep it hush-hush though, as the coverage likely won't hold up to a holiday crowd.
EDIT: Report for tomorrow indicates Jupiter Express will be turning. As well as 7th Heaven.

Short video from Friday at Stevens Pass. Glad we went!
I didn't notice any surface hoar frost. The (probably rain) crust was scoured in some places, built up with wind slab in others, but mostly it was below 4-8" of powder.

My group didn't do a detailed snow study.
The light was flat -- so it was hard to tell what was powder and what was the sparkly evil thing on the surface.
There was certainly sections of ice crust on the surface near the ridge, forming an ideal sliding surface for new snow and right on the steepest sections too.
Lowell, enjoy those wrestling matches while you can, my sons did water polo/swim team in HS and college and I watched them play/race o...

Did either of you see any surface hoar while you were up there?
Nice to see you on the hill Randy. I was trying out some new skimo gear and can verify that upper Orion skied surprisingly well even on toothpicks. Would have headed up again, but today I'm cheering on my son's wrestling team.
What a good day that was. We went back again today and continued milking the nicely settled pow. Nice to see you Zach and Stephanie, missed you I guess Silas. Merry Christmas everyone!
I very often get the timed out message or if not - the "this picture has already been used"
Much better than the 23rd! We had a few lift runs & 2 sort skins in the drizzle. Oddly, I tried to do a TR but kept getting the red warning bar saying my session had timed out
Forecast is looking better this weekend: some white stuff under the tree at last!

Cold boot top pow shared by about 8 people on Cowboy and Mill Valley. If only every day could be so easy. My Christmas wishes were granted in a big way.

I take it you skied the main couloir off of youngs peak? Any more pics? How is that line in general? Always wanted to ski it, but never had the right conditions the 4 or 5 times I have been up that way.
Also, can you show me on a map your route you took, perly rock and over the illy silly (Illecillewaet glacier?). Thanks!"

I applaud the effort, yet it still resulted in Vertical Video Syndrome.

What do you expect from a Jerry? ;D
Solid work. And thanks for getting the blowdown cleared. Might have to wander up that way on Christmas morning for some solitude.

This is team "A" with Eric getting the Big Line. ;)
Great commentary on the video! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, Charlie, for the beta. I haven't looked because I knew I wouldn't be able to handle the disappointment... ;)
I thought this would be a bit optimistic without another dump or two. Thank you for clearing the road though!
"You can’t really understand hydrogen bonding, though, without understanding why water molecules are arranged like they are."
There was no point for me to read any further.
-Great videos Shred, it was a pleasure storm chasing with you.

Hooray for Hydrogen Bonding! Thanks for the link, Stefan! My knowledge for the secrets of the universe are ever expanding :)
no soup huh silas, glad you got some cold stew!
they should have tourons SHOW their traction devices.
tetrahedral fun!
(they are indeed always six sided... and never exactly the same. Thanks to the intermolecular force of hydrogen bonding.)

Beauty of a video! Castle Rock was sorta a big part of my life way back when. Turns out my future wife and I both were on the summit separately in the 70's. The day after you guys were tearing it up, my daughter and her new husband went there for their first backcountry trip! Very small and beautiful world. Hope to see you again soon.

nice day skiing indeed.
We did have some slidey slidey activity on West Aspect at 6500ft. Wind loaded storm snow. Made a small crown a few inches deep and maybe 100ft wide. Sent the pigeons flying in all directions!
Only a littly, but could have been nasty on a more substantial fall line. Plenty of energy and she wanted to run!

After I wrote my reply I was already thinking I didn't give enough detail.
We did not see any tracks leading up the chute. Our hasty pit showed about a 50cm slab on top of the rain crust. Our ECT results produced an ECT22 with gross/jaged (not clean) propagation across the column. Definitely a Q2-3. After that result we pulled the column off of the rain crust and examine...

sneaky_steve: thank you very much for posting that followup and especially for the report on the slides. Do you have any more details about it? Dry slough, or storm/wind slab from last night's new? What was the total snow depth? I'd like to confirm (or prove wrong!) my suspicion that the instabilities you saw were new storm snow and not a 40+cm slab releasing on that rain crust. I...

Well there is only room for two people to make fresh turns in the canyon and being a gentlemen, if I stuck around I would have had to let them go first (;

Ran into a group of gals transitioning under the palmer lift station and considered striking a conversation but then I remembered that the canyon below is fairly skinny. The pow drew my attention away and we went to the base lodge to eat lunch.
Wow the pow drew your attention away from a group of gals!!? I have yet to see pow that good, maybe someday.
Sunshine isn't all it's cracked up to be :( Glad you are getting good snow down there.
Photo of slide mentioned above; observed what appeared to be another likely patrol cut line on pan face.
Very similar experience for us today. We dug a hasty pit about 100 feet above where the person in your first photo was. Found the rain crust at 50cm. Decided not to ride the chutes (including the two to the right of the one you pictured). Another group, a young teenage snowboarder and skier were heading for the ridge and had talked about riding the chutes. We recommended a different route of descent, but they continued on. On our next lap from the main silver basin saddle, we observed slide debr...
Andy somehow we missed you again today (19) . Mindy Nichols and I were practicing our powder turns in Edith basin while Ed Strauss skied circles around u son his Xc gear . A very good day to be there. Coverage improving . 12" of powder with 6" ski pen. light winds with some nice sunbreaks. Hope to be back tomorrow till the weather chases us out.

I like your future reporting technique, filing a TR for Dec 21 on Dec 19!
Ha, yeah, knowing the date is really hard for me right now apparently. Updated!

Thanks, Andy.
Looks like you'll need to go back out today and check what fell last night. ;)
Pretty nice today (19th), with 8 inches of new and some sunbreaks providiing spectacular views of the mountain.

:-) Thanks for all the beta! And LOL! No clue how I came up with Nisqually Gate!
Were they kind enough to let you park in the lot? Beware, they are tow happy.
I believe their special use permit states that they cannot trespass non-pass / ticket holders if they are not actively operating. Likely gray area, as they did spin chairs this season. But the current website posting says "We will open when..."

Nice work, such a beautiful line!
You would be correct running clouds pretty much right at blowdown pass.
Long way up the road 15km to the lake sled travel pretty quick. From there 1000ft runs in the alpine.
