Wayneflannavalancheblog.com has more pictures.
No, but I bet it filled in all the crevices and covered the boulders in the lower bowl! I'll check with a local blog and see. I'm sure there will be lots of photos today as the lift was scheduled to open.

Wow, looks like I put my foot in it!

thanks for the trip report; sorry the thread got hijacked so badly ;-)
Looks like the park may be changing things, today they posted a tweet by 7 am!

Thanks for the report. Very interesting chain of weather events for such an unusual slide to occur. Any idea on the slide path distance?

I think the snow crew is back to full staffing, and those guys who have been there for years really know the intricacies of clearing the 17 mile road from Nisqually Entrance to the JVC lot. It's much more than removing snow from the asphalt. Being swept off Glacier Hill by a slide would certainly be fatal, even in a plow.

Actually, when I was a (...
Seems like a very dangerous situation - here's what I'm talking about:

Be very afraid!

;)
I wasn't around then, but the old timers have told me that in the times of the model A the roads were plowed continuously during storms and the road to Paradise was seldom if ever closed.
that the road is too difficult to clear is horse crap imo, also, un-prepared tourons doing stupid things is also another poor excuse. the guvy is good at profiling, profile the tarts at the gate if bald tires are the issue, got dam.

I find it amazing they still keep this road open in winter, but I'm glad they do it when they can.

This irks me (more than it probably should... nothing personal, man). Perfect statement to reinforce the Park's BS policies of late.
Good point drescj. Better communication with the public about expected opening times would make a big difference. Twitter is ok, although once I'm in the Park I no longer get internet.

Some time ago (maybe 2 years?) they were fairly good about getting the twitter feed and the recording updated with estimated gate opening info by around 7:00 AM, especially on the weekends. Unfortunately that didn't last. A tweet at 11:00 or noon saying that "the gate will not open today because of ...." does one little good and is more likely to just irritate the reader.

Has the twitter feed been any more reliable this year? I was told by Randy King last season that the park was going to make a better effort with the feed for this year, but I am out of the country so I can't say if that has been the case.

I think if the park made a better effort at providing timely and accurate information it would really improve people's perception of the park's road management. As of last year, the twitter feed was haphazardly updated, and when it wa...
Right on. We watched you guys ski off the top while lounging in the flats of the glacier. Figured it must have been decent snow based on the turns you made.

I'm glad you chimed in here, because I was hoping to talk to you guys that day but never crossed paths... Check your ski bindings, dude! I found a fine-pitch machine screw in the snow on the upper Coleman glacier, inches from one of your switchbacks! It looked just like the ones used with the stainless inserts.
nice photos! very beautiful. My brother and I were the group of two that headed to the summit. . . Those were some intense winds up there! The snow right off the top was very nice though. made it seem worth being whipped in the face by ice crystals for an hour. I didn't bring my camera with me, so it was great to check out your pictures. Thanks for sharing!
That face just across from the Nisqually chute.
Great TR. Just curious the last pic, was that Nisqually Chute? or something else?
I do indeed!

Here's a link to more pics (hopefully it'll work!):

Sorry that was ment as a joke, as in they should hire one more aka me (;

I assumed as much :-)

But I forgot one person important to the TAY community, my former friend, colleague, and Avalanche Hall of Fame, Sue Ferguson, who did her thesis work on avalanche terrain around Paradise

At least you put it in mostly bold so instead of appearing to argue, it looks like you are shouting. That's better. Than arguing.

LOL.  The arguing evidently fell on deaf ears, so I quoted it and put it in italics and bold for the hard of hearing; shouting is ALL CAPS.

My brain is refusing to accept that picture compared to memories of the well-traveled Summer road. How the hell does that gravel highway get that soft?!

There's a set of ruts there that have been dug deep by many vehicles before us. A small creek keeps the soil fully saturated - so it's practically quicksand right there. Otherwise, the road is as you rem...
The stoke gate is officially open!  Strong work!  However, please make sure you and your stoke are out by 5pm.
Top quality report. I was wonderingishing about that area.
You haven't got any more photos have you?
I think they need one more hydrologist/hydrogeologist (;

I am not arguing that there should be no geomorphologists (or how many they need), or LEOs (or how many), or biologists (or how many) or botanists (or how many)--but how are priorities set given the large budget, 80% of gate receipts, massive volunteer effort, etc. "

At least you put it in mostly bold so instead of appearing to...

...But I don't see a need to denigrate valuable resource programs because of this, IMO, relatively limited problem. Maybe that wasn't your intention - in printed word it does come across a bit flippant, however.

And I said: "Staffing is a matter of management planning and priorities. Does the park need its own geomorphologist staff?  What do they...
Way to get up high and find it. That picture tells the story.
Well - as a practicing restoration ecologist with 30+ years experience - and having done a series of research/restoration projects (pro bono) up at Rainer, I'll chime in and say that yes, the revegetation program and staff have significantly contributed to the core Park mission, which includes the conservation of resources for the enjoyment of generations to come.

I'm also a BC skier and not that crazy about the gate management and share this concern with others.  But I...
Gotta be at least 20 miles from cell coverage up there.  How did you get the tow?  Walk all the way out?
My brain is refusing to accept that picture compared to memories of the well-traveled Summer road. How the hell does that gravel highway get that soft?!
Good work my friend!  This goes to show that decent snow can be found and I'm inspired by your mantra to have fun no matter the conditions.
Norseman, I am glad to hear that info sharing works! I cannot wait and go back. A snow dance tonight, fingers crossed tomorrow.
I went for the tennies and Yak-Trax  ;D
Nice work. My party saw you guys up there. If only our alpine start didn't begin at 10am we might have joined you higher than Heliotrope ridge. Oh well, the rain crust was fun skiing.

Hiking up there in TX-pros was fine but I can't wait to get my F1 Evos ready to go, especially considering the likelihood of higher elevations being the only game in town in the near and far future. :(
Thanks, dudes.

Runningclouds, your excellent photos from last week inspired us to make the cruise up there. It was nice to squeak in a decent size tour before the rainy BS began.

That comment really takes the cake....

LOL.  I've been a revegetation specialist/ecological restoration specialist and I am fully familiar with the history of Mt. R and soil conservation efforts across the nation ... my comment was rhetorical--what does a revegetation specialist do--what does a teacher do--what does a physician do...the point being...

I recall what it was like in the park back in the "dust bowl" days of the '60s and '70s when there was a maze of social trails all over Paradise Park and at Sunrise.  The flower gardens around Paradis...
i wish my buddy gator ran the place, if anyone is listening, at least we could trust what mike reported.
I definitely agree about the skin track. It didn't hurt that those were the kindest snow conditions I've seen on that stretch (for skinning, not so much for the downsliding).
Well apparently my previous reply with a quote decided to display blank, interesting.  I'll leave out my novel about bankers hours.

I just wanted to say thank you to whoever set the skin track up pan point at a reasonable angle.  With the conga line an agro slip and slide angle would have been disastrous.
We got out thanks to the guys at Roslyn Towing. A winch would have been a wise investment...
Those are some really beautiful photos you took.  Nice job and thanks for sharing.  All the skiing this year is going to have to be high at this rate!  58 and heavy rain tonight...
Dam...that's impressive stuck.  Self recovery?

Oh yes, we know the spot well!
