"There is something to be said for reading over maps, thinking over conditions and then setting off an adventure and seeing what you find yourself. "
I pretty much agree with that last statement.
I get really annoyed however at the TAY drama about the "TAY effect" or "secret stashes" or any other time someone is pissed that other people found "their spot". The cascades are vast and our population actually isn't. ...

We were so lucky to be on the snowing side of the snow line by a few scant feet of altitude. Rain all the way to the parking lot, then nice new from there on up, about 8" by the time we got back to the car.
Thanks for a fun tour in mist, thinly covered sharks, and the usual early season fun things. It sure is time to get more snow up there.

So you heard second hand from your friends that there were no tracks prior to theirs? I think I'd question them about how much they were really looking for other peoples tracks, rather than call a report into question, after someone posted about being there.
Nice assumption, but actually I was there too. 3 friends, 3 descent tracks descending from the top of...
Thanks for the trip report Kevin. Had "forgotten" about Green Mountain.

Nice thinking, Kevin. IIRC Burgdorfer describes this as an good early season/low cover tour. Way to hop on that road opening!
WRT the critique, I like the "no spray in TRs" policy on nwhikers. There generally, if someone sees an issue of concern raised w/in a report, they start a new post about the issue in their equivalent of "random tracks" and thus avoid demotivating posters of TRs. Sekrit Lakes appears to be the nwhikers equivalent of "quiet stashes"...

Odd...there were no ski tracks off Green mountain yesterday (or from the tiny lake onward for that matter), until my friends put them there on Nov 30.
I was hopeful the fact that this destination was now accessible again would remain hush-hush at least for a while, but alas...the TAY way is to drag a crowd to a previously quiet spot.
Whoa. The secr...

Great Trip report!
thanks for the contribution and thanks for sharing.
...after all, that's the idea of a community right?

Nice video! The skiing looked awesome!

Don't bring your Goodes out of storage yet, Doug ;)
But don't we all love the Ridge in those crisp conditions???

It was fun seeing you guys up there on Saturday. Jan and I went back up on Sunday for another snowshoe hike out along Sunrise Ridge. Seeing some of our favorite runs turning white is definitely making us anxious for a couple big dumps so we can break out the skis!

I second the warning on the ice crossings. I got damp toes when I punched through the slush.
Hey big guy, nice to see you on here. Oh yeah I'll never forget sweet Kala and our adventures chasing ducks and pheasant in those sage land river valleys. So much has changed since matthews beach and yet a lot is still the same :). See you on the hill!
I thought the first 600ish feet under the southern cross chair skied quite well, as did the cruise out on Daisy. Skyline was fun, but I took a core shot up near the top. the weather was absolutely stunning.
hey young fella, remember who you got the first ski bug from?
i still got a pic you took of Kalakupua at the snow lake divide about 15 years ago.
matthews beach seems like another life ago amongst my many.
nice vid from your adventure to the cb lodge!

I hope you had your avalanche beacon on and were keeping track of yourself with a GPS (compass and map in reserve) given the heavy and continuing snowfall (as perceived by the Park). ::)
I'll add a few.

As much as I hate to break it to you I made the same descent under, ahem, "similar conditions" ::) a couple years ago. We missed the amphitheater pillow line though so I think you can claim that one!
I know the sound of that ice - and the windcake. Pretty Bluebird days make it all good. I could tell from my scant snow surroundings along hiway 97 that you needed to be high to get much snow this weekend. Good work.

That looks like the best snow around, nice going! I would love some of that.
awesome vid. apparently i need to get down to crystal.
Coverage is good from parking lot. Very icy around and above Pan Point; consistently nice snow started above 8000-8300 feet. Nice day to be out.

Hmm. I didn't experience anything quite that nice.
To be fair, that was from Central. West doesn't have anything steep enough for that! (Wildside excluded).
Hey, Bobby, great skiing with you too. However, too many pictures of my butt. Next time you lead, and I'll be the photographer ;-)
Good skiers make bad snow look good! Wow.
Awesome! I did not expect to be reading a TR from Green Mtn so early after the road re-opened, much less considering the low tide currently affecting the Cascades. Way to get it!
What silas said. Except for the bootpacking part and the shark bites. We made some skippy turns through low angle terrain above 4500' on Brooks, then a final slog to the top of Skyline as the shadows grew long. Beautifully clear weather, but frigid temps - the thermometer outside the bump shack read 9F (@ 5250') when we started our last descent, brr! I buried the nose under a snow snake midway to the bottom and slammed my head and shoulder hard on the firm base below the soft snow. Gla...

Hey I thought it was pretty fun. One core shot, but that's what ptex candles are for.

Trail was fine on the way up, seemed to be a little icier on the way down but no problems, its not anywhere near as bad as paradise gets. Easily skinnable from treeline or a little before.
Don't trust the ice on the creek crossings. My wife ended up with wet boots on the first one.

How is the trail? Any ice? How far did you walk? Thanks

Way to make the most of Plan B when making plans for turns at MNRP!
We went for a short stroll on foot at pass level this afternoon. FS roads are quite snowy (6-8" of dry fluff atop 2-4" of very consolidated and supportable snow), but forests are almost barren in spots (snow on the trees). Cold and beautiful at sunset; unexpectedly good day out.
Agree 100%. Toured up to the top of the ridge at Central today, and honestly the trip up was more enjoyable than the trip down. The snow quality was superb and the temperature and views were great, but there just wasn't enough depth. Hit a lot of sharks on the trip down. Going to need some TLC on the base now.
author=Wad link=topic=32850.msg136891#msg136891 date=1417306151]I somehow screwed up and posted this without the trip report. Probably a good thing because it was nothing more than a massive pile of sarcasm directed at the park service for having the gate closed on a partly sunny holiday weekend with minimal snow on the road.
We hiked up to Cougar rock and skied the pavement. Woo hoo!
Thanks for lowering our expectations in the parking lot jake! With recalibrated sense of conditions we took two runs and had great fun.
Excellent snow quality, but it was so light things are not at all knocked down/filled in. (But I imagine reports from places with a base will come back glowing later today). Name of the game was to go fast and not make wide turns. Slow down, and the brush gets ya.

i strongly recommend packing an actual golf club and hitting shots while on the skiis !
