Glad to hear it Phil. I took Avy I this year for the 3rd time. It makes more sense each time. I took a class from Northwest Mountain School once, it was fun. Check out the "Going Deep" series from NWAC for continued learning.

I'm still an amateur. And I don't dig unless I feel it's really necessary. Nonetheless if you want the snowpack details from our pit that day, they're on NWAC here fwiw. (Sorry NW...
The rapid snow melt has afforded ample pavement behind the signage.  ::)
Great report! I completed an Avy I class this last weekend (shout out to the great folks at MW Mountain School in Leavenworth) and this stuff is making more sense. Reading your report reinforces what we learned.
I have to say that I liked Green Mountain a lot! The views were really spectacular and I like clouds - makes for better pictures  ;)

And holy moley - the Suiattle River Road is really driveable again! My feet were hurting just thinking about all the road walking at the end of Ptarmigan Traverse in 2012.

Some pictures from my camera:

Aki turns are great. The front paws/shovel initiates the turns, plus getting his own line.  ;)
Thanks for the update.  I like your BBQ. We use the same one.  ;)
We saw you getting ready at the Canyon Y--we wondered if you would get a ticket parking so close to the No Parking sign LOL.

The snow you rode looked a lot better than what we thought it would be!  Nice video.
Nice video!  From what we saw, at least some were not only challenged by the fog but seemed to be encountering a wet styrofoam crust that left them laying trenches--not easy snow to ski!  Much nicer snow and weather today (12 Feb): corn snow
Right, Andrew, when the ski tracks look like 2 drunken snowboarders riding together, that's me skiing the fog, wide stance, trying to figure out which way's up! Notice I'm not featured in the video.
Thanks for the great report--with snow pit work!  Maybe it's time to head up to Whistler....
"With much grunting we skied the N and NE aspects in disorienting flat light and poor visibility. "  Yeah we saw your tracks today and wondered who in h*ll skis like that LOL Nice corn snow today (flat light and poor visibility as well).
The link doesn't seem to be working. 404

My dream just came true, I am downloading your map and the app as I type. Can we have one for Baker please?

hey, glad you like it! sorry to say, no on the baker map.
many reason exist for my excuse, one of them is data availability, other is I made this Rainier map for myself then just decided to share it with a crowd that could  hopefully get some use from...
PLEASE NOTE - I had previously mentioned March 14th as a potential backup date for the race - but that got overturned (won't work for Meany) and the March 28th is the actual backup date.  Sorry for any confusion...
thanks for the low down Charlie!
I'm liking that precip for temps swap.  C'mon, be godly!
It was a great day out - classic "low expectations" exceeded by decent skiing type of day... Nice to catch a break from the weather crunching for once... though it was still far too warm :/

If you send us colder air, we'll send water!
Well, avvy danger should be stable for the event...
Nice to see a trip report from inside WA state. Rock on
Thanks for the good TR.  Sun AND snow  8)
it was a neat day to be out....it was fun watching that wx system roll in.  made for great clouds most of the day for sure.  it was like a 6hr long sunset or something.....  I was up near Eldorado that same day...
Yikes - The woods look more bare than my bleak expectations.  I will be touring the Patrol Route on Sunday Feb 7th and will report back with what I find.  The race is about getting through the terrain in whatever conditions might exist.  A pair of running shoes might be an additional line item on the recommended equipment list for the race this year:)  - Nigel
We repeated Mt. Whymper on the 4th. Conditions were even better although the wind was starting to cause concerning consolidation of the snow at the col. We still ascended the same way up the north slopes of Mt. Whymper but this time we dropped a car lower down on 93S. Skiing the south side cuts out the slog down the Chickadee valley. The south scree gulley was wonderfully cross loaded providing fluffy knee deep turns into the basin below. The snowpack is pretty low below 1800m but still deep eno...
Forgot to mention. If anyone gets down that way, drop in to the new Guide Garage in Ouray that Gary Ryan and Averill Doering just opened. A meeting / gathering / tuning / coffee place for bc skiers and climbers in the San Juans...
Looks fantastic, thanks for the post.
lovely place that i went with my friend erik.
BTW, anybody know why I get an error message when posting three 240 Kb pix that the attachment is too large b/c it exceeds 600 Kb?
Cool, I've always just gone straight up the front.
I'm not sure how long it took us, but it was quick!  I think it's only 1.5-2 miles to the first switchback and it's just barely uphill.  An easy glide out too.
Edward would be proud of you! Nice line. Have fun
"Playful" skiing defines Norseman's style.  Powerful and graceful too.  He makes anything look fun.
Obviously the corn in the chute must have been great with such fun, playful skiing.
How long did it take you to get to the switchback?
Thanks, dudes. I should've brought the telephoto lens and tripod to better capture Rowan & Co.'s effort!

Dan: Yes, I skied alone this day. I rode up to Paradise with a coworker, who cruised around the lower terrain with his 2-year-old in the backpack.

Rowan: It was super fun for me to watch your party ascend and descend during my jaunt. Thanks for the entertainment! I first spotted you after breaking out of the trees near Paradise... you were just above the...
Woah! Sweet clouds, indeed. Thanks for sharing.
Who's the hot skier model?  Can I get their #?
Way to play it.  Years like this make big lines like that more doable.
Nice! With horrible conditions in the Cascades, you guys make chicken salad out of chicken you-know-what. Inspired tour.
nice work Scott,  Did you go solo?
Excellent photos, I love the black and white! I think I am the tiny speck there in the finger. That photo really gives you some perspective on how big the mountain is.
Sick dude. The finger and the wilson gully! Stoked.
Well there are extremely low snowpacks in a lot of places in the interior but I think the pass and the icefields parkway are average at treeline. I was more referring to the recent spell of rain that appeared to ruin  the snow to mountain top but turns out things weren't that bad in the rockies (:
Great photos, video, and conditions!
Sick Photos.

I think thats rowan and crew on the finger.
