If I have to wait at the bottom one more time for stupid slow skiers that didn't have the sense to buy a board decades ago.....

Sorry John, I wasn't referring to you. You are one of the "good" skiers. . I wasn't actually referring to any of my current ski partners. Just some former, from a long time ago, not very good, can't remember their name kind of partners.

Anybody looking for a new partner? It's OK if you are a skier, I don't mind waiting (very much).

LMAO!  I go to White Pass mall to ski with the grandkids on the weekend (and avoid crowds at Paradise when it is open) and, now, when Paradise is closed and its raining below 3500 ft asl; at least mid-week it is mostly us old farts and skiing can be quite fun and convivial.  We skied 2-3 foot deep untracked powder off piste Tuesday with 2 couples we met at High Camp lodge, very nice (I usually do not ski in groups).  I had my S7s and my wife had a ball on her new Moment Pikas (141-111-129)

Andrew, I was at White Pass Tuesday and I am curious as to where the 2 to 3 feet of untracked powder you were skiing came from?

There are plenty of skiers and snowboarders that can smoke old Kim, so what's she all fired up about snowboarders for?

Lets face it. That's probably true. My post was a reaction to all the industry news about the decline of snowboarding. Crystal patrons can seem elitist at times, but I've picked up on extreme localism at almost every Western resort I've visited. We west coast folks tend to be a brooding, opinionated group.

As far as the management's attitude about snowboarding, some of you have it wrong. When Boyne brought Brighton in 1986, they were one of the first ski areas to not only allow snowboarders but to also welcome them. Now it's considered the snowboarding area in SLC. My husband was in charge of Brighton then and now is the GM at Crystal. And he carries that same attitude towards snowboarders today. His brother and partner in Boyne is a snowboarder.

Crystal has some hefty traverses. The layout is maddening. I can only imagine how frustrating it would be on a board. Southback is also hard to access on a board, and the portholes left on the traverse can make it dangerous.

Almost every day someone asks me on the chairlift, "when are you going to get rid of snowboarders?" I just roll my eyes. Sliding on snow of any kind is fun, worthwhile and usually pretty awesome. I ask them if they've tried it. They usually haven't.

I get the feeling some of the reactions here and on my blog are just sword sharpening exercises intended to root out the naysayers. Or the turtle neck wearers as one commenter so aptly put. I got a big chuckle out of that one.

So flame on if it makes you feel better. My post was originally a reaction to all of the recent media about the decline of the sport and my own observations. Like I said earlier, snowboarding powder is great. It's amazing. But getting to it before its gone is harder than ever (thanks to fat skis) and snowboarding might not be the most efficient tool out there.

That is unless the snow is guanch or breakable crust or full of buggy whips. Oh wait. That's skiing in the PNW, isn't it? Damn. Maybe I should go buy a board.
