Sweet! Sounds like a neat place to explore.  Got any pics?? Cuz if you don't... it didn't really happen. :)
Hahaha,  Every ski is Carl's "rock ski" :)
Nice one Dooder! Way to keep er going after the few prior days of death marching! Respect.
Oh my! Those are your rock skis, right?
Congrats on a safe and successful trip!

It's fun to follow the links to past reports about the high-level orbit. Definitely a route of character, one that doesn't get done very often.

If you don't have it already, you might look for a copy of this map:

It includes details of vogtski's May 1990 trip with RMI and a couple other early trips as well. M...
Hi Eric, that was our group who was skiing Cub. There was a near disaster when one of our group's ski took off down the hill, making it nearly 1000' down where it stopped, unharmed, in some heather above a cliff!

We took 2 south facing corn laps before heading down the Mesahchie glacier Saturday afternoon. Nice corn on all of those runs. We found a good campsite below the glacier next to running water. Lack of a clear plan and consensus among our group of 7 led to a late mor...

I hadn't been to Easy Pass before and man, is that a spectacular perspective on some stunning terrain.

No kitling! The last time I was there I swore that I would return the very next week to sample some of the surrounding goods but, alas, that was a couple of years ago now...
A real embarrassment of wealth we have in great skiing!
Still a lot of snow to ski, albeit above 5000'...  Here is Goat Rocks looking good:

A friend and I came across your tracks on our way up the Russell the day after you passed by and wondered who it might have been.  It was interesting to look down on your route across the Mowich from atop the Russell; awesome zone. We also used a section of your skin track the following day to gain Observation.  So...thanks again!

I wish we would have seen you....
Excellent photos!
So many places to ski before the loooong summer break...

Half of our party of six used skinny skis and pin bindings and felt they were the better gear choice since there was so little unroped downhill skiing on this trip.

Yea...I used my voile vector BC's which were great, but there was very little downhill turns without being roped. Skinny skis do well on the hard ice that we had a lot of as well. As I posted in anothe...
Cool trip and fun write up; thanks for posting!

Looks like you shared some of our experiences, for sure! You do feel extremely isolated at times, and it has taken me a few weeks before thinking I'd ever do it again! Takes a bit for the sharp edges of the trip to dull a bit, and the beauty and majesty of the trip to take over my memories.  I think starting at White River is a great way to do this...wasn't an option for us since we did the trip earlier in the year.

For us, getting onto the N Mowich was a real challenge...
Thanks for the beta; it will be interesting to see what route the rangers set.
Winthrop shoulder may get the nod but the access ramp looks to be just out of frame on the lower right (behind the Prow).
Anyone have a current photo showing the route from Sherman to the Winthrop shoulder?
Mt Ruth =  ;D

Thanks for doing the TR Kenji!
What a perfect day! It is amazing how good the skiing is a full month before it usually gets like this. What a lovely place!

David
Thanks for the nice write-up and congratulations on a successful trip!  Pretty bold for a party of two.  And ah yes, the memories...I should get my slides digitized   :)

I also packed light for our May trip and nearly froze my butt off.  Guide Geo scouted the high variation near St Andrews Rock from our Puyallup Glacier camp and wisely took us across the Tahoma Glacier much lower.  Half of our party of six used skinny skis and pin bindings and felt they were the better gear choice si...
Mmm? Nothing listed on the MRNP trail conditions site besides a low crossing of the Nisqually river.

The footbridge adjacent to the White River Campground is out, according to signs near the parking area.

Is there another one you're thinking of?
Not sure if that was you, but we heard whoops and saw ski tracks late Saturday afternoon below the N face of Cub from across the way--we were just getting up to camp on Ragged View (Peak 6730).   No signs of instability we could see on your track, not even the slightest slough triggered.

Conditions Sunday am were great on the ridge and N slopes for cramponing as everything froze overnight on those aspects.  More southern aspects had wet sugar postholing up Trumpet (Peak 6865), but sti...
Thanks for the beta. Looking forward to
skiing off the top when conditions are
ready. Any beta on the bridge washout?
Fantastic! It brings back great memories. Here is Gary W. and my high orbit trip report from 2008. I was on the inter glacier yesterday looking over St.Elmos pass and recalling our adventure.

Nice chatting with you below the summit. What a great day!
We did this tour last year in June.  You actually got a couple of nice photos of our tracks:

So much more snow last year a full month later.  We skinned right over the lakes.  Wow.
Not super deep, and a month ahead of most picture dates.  Look how much more of Russell cliff is already out in 2015.

Here's a shot from the prow on 6/2/2013:

Beautiful
Melting fast. Lakes were covered two weeks ago.
There was cloudy cover on Friday night, so the snow didn't get a good freeze. Might be ok with a bunch of clear nights?

On the plus side, the snow from Cascade Pass down to the trailhead was maybe the best I've ever skied on that line. Snow that's normally bumpy with debris and filled with tree pieces and rocks was (relatively) smooth and soft.

Thanks, Andy.

I lack historical perspective to be making notes about what's normal for this route. Perhaps some more folks with better experience will chime in. Thanks for the comparison shot, Erik.

I'm sure someone with more years of experience with the glacier's condition can chime in, but here is an image from July of 2013 (from a different angle - mine taken from Sherman)

It seems to look somewhat similar to the conditions in May of 2015...but it's hard to tell. I had hoped our "snow drought" would mean the upper mountain might still be relative...
outstanding shots as always. Does the Emmons corridor look way more broken up than usual, or is there something about the photo?
Hey, ain't that near Truch and Conchquenches?
You're going to get as as many answers to this question as there are genres of music, and I guarantee that while you are skinning up to Muir listening to BB King someone else on the snowfield is listening to Beyonce while yet another is rockin Swedish death metal.

But there are some commonalities. Generally for rhythmic aerobic exercise you want a 4/4 time signature (ubiquitous in popular music) and a tempo of 120 - 130 bpm. Bonus points for strong emphasis on the 1 and 3 beats (...
What ZAP said!  I had been around that country from time to time for work, and it looked fantastic, last summer I had a chance to drive to the wilderness boundary and spend a few short hours fishing the Pecos (of course you know what Truchas means). Nice work skiing that fantastic place,  no matter that it took ten years!
If I hear that either of you guys is planning on skiing Whazzup Willis, I'm going to pull the starters out of your cars....
Congrats on a great line and write-up.  You guys "know when to hold 'em and know when to fold 'em".  Glad this one worked out.
Ahhhhh yeahhhh.

Fantastic trip report.  ;)

It's probably 3-4' deep at the parking lot
What was the coverage like? I havent been up or seen pictures of the parking lot in a while, is the snow still continuous?

Mama told me not to come.

Three Dog Night
Mama told me not to come.
The road is negotiable for low clearance vehicles.  There are lots of big pot holes on the road so take it slow and drive around them.  Only the last 9-10 miles are dirt.
I might need to jump on board this train.

How was the road for low clearance/2WD vehicles?
Ha!  Need those arrow thingies.    Thanks --- and nice photos BTW
