Here's a closer up of that finger when we ski'd it a couple years ago. I have a couple even closer photos but not on this computer.
Nice hustle Lowell! Did you happen to get any photos of peaks closer to Cascade Pass, like Johannesburg?
Here are some pictures finally.
Jeff, that stove story is hilarious! I can imagine a fire in that lookout would not end pretty. Lemme guess how it ended up at the bottom of the face: rainbow kick?

Disappointing? People complain that time flies and days are short. Good skiing accelerates the loss of time.
But carrying heavy packs saddled with skis through brush and over deadfall makes time crawl. A day feels like a week. The more heinous the slide alder, the more time you have. Sometimes a day can feel like a month.
What's disappointing about finding the solution to the question "Where does the time go?"

Hit me up, if I can get a hall pass, I'm there. I love that area.
I suspect there will be a few more folks one the Middle fork road is paved. Assuming it doesn't slide into the river.....

That's a beautiful photo, Jake. Both salt in the wound and mouth watering. What a ski that would be... all the way to the bottom of the photo. The right arrow is the snow finger in the Becky guide. The col that we skied from on our consolation ski is behind the left arrow.
Dawn, almost exactly a year ago. I reckon one of those is your finger?
The Illabot road is in astonish9ingly good shape. I think it may partially maintained by the locals. I know that if I lived there & needed a good sunset & view down onto my home turf I'd head up that way.
It could also be that it was originally very well thought-out & made.
Excellent photos as usual Mr Skoog

...that's the business, right there. Local skiing & rock hoppin'. Excellent report, many thanks you've inspired me to get the glue back on the skins!
Nice work, any pictures of the crux section of the Kautz?
2 pieces of pizza is you favorite but I remove the onions before I pack them( saves weight). ;)
Fun vid, really enjoyed it and a number of others this year. Thanks!!! Posted today my FB page:

Lowell you are a fast traveler. Glad to hear you made a personal best. Pizza on top looks like a nice reward.
Nice work, glad it went, and thanks for grabbing some stuff. You did miss out on skiing this shizzle, though:
The run to the "pond" brings back some great days. Thanks for the TR and photos. ;)
Awesome! Love the comparisons with the cascades.
Fits and starts on the video...looks like it was pretty cool area though..thanks!

my notes from 2001 for finding the trail to "King" Lake: 50yds up the road from the Illabot Creek bridge find a wet area/seep/tiny creek. Go up this 50 vertical feet (some alder, no nettles) to trail. trail starts 20 feet left of a large log lying down the fall line.
My notes from 1988 are similar, but I didn't find the trail following these note...

Looks like good times traveling in the mountains with a heavy pack.
Next time I ski in Norway, definitely checking out this zone.
Thanks Erik. I've had friends that use it. The camera would work well for longer trips where weight is an issue. I like my SLR for sure, but I've been tempted more and more by the lighter gear, each year that goes by.
Thanks for video - I'll add it to the pile of reasons to get out that way soon..
I've been using a sony a7 for a few months. Been quite a transition from a canon SLR. Certainly lighter... get ready to buy all new camera bags, or have a camera that just slides around inside your current bag. It might sound pretty obvious, but definitely get out to a store, or grab a friend's sony to fool with first... it feels very different in your hands than a larger sized SLR, and too...

Jason I use the lower-end Sony NEX-5n mirrorless and I just thought I'd plug that it has performed flawlessly with zero maintenance for over a year of ski touring and mountaineering.
Great video of course!

Thanks for the write-up. I spoke with a Search and Rescue volunteer who said a climber was glissading with micro-spikes and snapped an ankle bone. She didn't mention anything about a missing boarder.
Good to see you Floater near the Prow.
Very fun trip and good corn.

Here some picture of the trip.

Running Clouds,
Weight, mainly. I carry a lot of camera weight into the mountains. Think of it as being an extra pair of skis, boots and bindings. With a sony A7r I'd be able to cut the weight significantly: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1008112-REG/sony_ilce7r_b_a7r_mirrorless_digital_camera.html The lenses are smaller and lighter, and even a few ounces per lens adds up, as well as the other accessories, each smaller and lighter. My entire set up would probably be half t...

Nice video. Why do you really want a mirrorless sony? What are the advantages over your current camera?
thanks, everyone!

i realize this TR is a little over the top in terms of length, but this trip meant a lot to me so i feel almost obliged to record it. maybe next year i'll just post a few highlight photos...

Yeah, Kam! Way to score! Your stove malfunction, reminds of a time gone by, of a little game called stove soccer. Three Fingers lookout is a bad place to have a stove flair up... word is, there's a...maybe useable Whisperlite, at the base of the East face. :)
Hey Garrett, the conditions on the face are pretty good right now. You will be able to pass the schrund climbers left. It's actually easily visible from the road, so you can't miss it, right at the bottom of the face where the slope angle goes from ~30 to ~40+
sounds like fun!
sadly i've been consumed by trying to get my van running with its new engine and haven't been back out since i ran into you up on the fryingpan. considering that i was introduced to the sport that day i will enlighten the uninitiated--"bottleering" is like mountaineering except that instead of technical climbing gear you have bottles of home brewed cider, and instead of risking your life on steep, exposed faces you are sitting in the sun and...

Thanks for the TR, it would be nice to see a pic of Emmons. What is bottleering?
You summed of the season very well with the gear reference.
Thanks for the inspiring post, Lowell. That is such a beautiful area to ski that it makes one forget all the dirt-walking involved in getting there. Were you able to skin much from Squaw Lake to Cathedral Pass? Below is a nice pano of me and James H. when we were there 3 years ago. It appears that now TWO people with last-name Freeman have skied Lynch. Maybe there are more. I've been thinking that a great trip would be to camp for a few nights at Lynch Dr...
Thanks for the TR Kam! I've been looking at that face all season, wondering when it would be safely consolidated enough to ski. Nice job tackling that one solo!
When you talk about passing the bergschrund "on the left" - I assume this is climber's left? At about what elevation was this?
Glad you didn't blow yourself up while making dinner!

"Having a pair of skis with Dynafits is like having a chair lift in your pocket."
That is a true fact!

Great TR! Thanks for sharing.
Here is a 13 MB low-quality cell phone panorama taken from Fortune Pk. in the Teanaway at 11:06 on May 24th showing the clouds spilling through the gaps in the Cascade crest.
