I set off an avalanche on Lolo Peak above Carlton Lake in 2001. On June 3rd. On alpine skis. (I didn't have a clue and was lucky!)
Well, almost (I hitched a ride for about 3 miles up Mormon Creek Road to the TH). Did you say you set the avi off on Carlton ridge?
Thanks for the report, your assessment and the web cam helps us lesser turns two thirds of the year skiers know when to come out of hibernation. Putting rock skis in truck for tomorrow if anyone wants a carpool.

Almost 50 miles of moving! (26 on the bike, 20 hiking, 4 skiing)
Impressive! So you rode all the way from US 12 to the usual trailhead? Wow! Lolo Peak is one of my favorites!! I've lived in and out of Missoula for 17 years now. That's also where I set off my one and only avalanche, on June 3rd in a big snowstorm! We hiked all the way to the top of Carl...
Mr. Knees is being modest again. He got 11 years with our miniature RockTAYberfest yesterday! 8)
We could've skinned above Pan, but only booted. Coverage was marginal for both hike and boulder-slalom, but it was good to get that first blast of wintery conditions.

Nice TR again. Mr. mikerolfs is "in the know on where to go".
Kudos on year 7. It's an exciting ball and chain we drag around with us!

Congrats Mike! Thanks for the great pictures, and report. Yippee winter is coming!
:). MW8 and Colorado deliver again.

Nice one! Is the infamous truck eating road bog also fixed? It is usually near the end of the road, by the FS cabin.
Yes! Graded and graveled. The gravel road is no issue now.

Thanks, Phil. I'm a teacher of high school, and a student of snow...
...using literature (gathering the glisse) and science (prime factorization) you've spun a superb trip report.
Congratulations Greg on 20. I haven't seen many posts of you getting your TAY before the end of a month ::) Compared to Sept. 29 there is a huge pile of freshies

Congrats, telemack! 10 years. There should be a patch.
Sweet picture of the Nisqually chute in September coverage, good comparison for the deep pack later on.

While it's a minor note -- we did see some instability across the valley. Gravity knows no season.
Fun day up there. Gotta love the late sunsets. I found a purple-patterned wool hat on muir snowfield, can be picked up at paradise visitor center. Not sure if TAY has lost and found page.
20 years...Can you recall all of them?! Nice work, Ironman. My 240 is right behind ya, next weekend!!!
Righteous first post of the season.

That skiing looks dreamy for September.

Excellent TR as usual. Where is Moxie? That doggie could haul ass on snow for wearing such short "sticks" :D I hope your new pal is an addition, not a replacement.
Very cool. I skied Andrews on October 31, 1992 with 12 inches or so of new. We left at 4am, got home at about 5pm and proceeded to go to Mall Crawl where the three of us dressed as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on Pearl Street and stayed out until 7am the next morning. I'm actually surprised the "glacier" is still there but it looks almost the same to me. Mall Crawl is long gone...
Hell yeah!! Feeling more stoked after reading that TR. Awesome!
:). Keep 'em coming. There's no TR quite like an MW8 TR.
Way to precede the PNW on fresh snow touring, too!

Sounds a lot like the walk down from Colchuck Lake with skis on your back! Almost celebrity status. Looks like a great ski.
Ive been to Frey in the "summer" (our winter) and that place is phenomenal. Very cool.
I'm glad a dog owner saw the humor in my post- your pup looks like a shambling monster coming down the trail would not phase her. Probably look at you and ask "for real?"
It's a funny thing about streaking. I know my family will also support mine, if just to get me out of the house.
A decade is an unreal thing when you really get down to it. You survived traveling, sickness, partner less trips (well, some of us without hounds!) and unpleasant skiing...

Thanks for the report, Mike. Having the dog in the pictures is great for perspective on the sun cup size. For me the streak is a means to an end... staying in shape and staving off old age :-) i tell my kids "someday I'll be too old to do this...BUT THIS IS NOT THAT DAY!" And off i go...
Great video. A cross between watching a rodeo, and a Bare Grylls show. Fresh snow coming soon...
I know it seems cruel to suggest, but are you obsessevly goal oriented? HA! Ashamed I was too lazy o make the trip!

Thanks for the September report for this area! Also, I love the way you worded your note of caution, well said!
Thanks! Both of the scariest things I've witnessed/heard in a decade of backcountry skiing were in the search for too-frozen early-season turns.
I envy your postage stamp. I ski those in the summer too, but mine require a pretty good walk.
I laughed out loud at this. Thanks for the great story!

Choose slope angle/aspect carefully -- it's not worth trading the winter to come for a few extra turns on last year's leftovers.

Just realized that I didn't have notifications coming to my email so just saw your replies. Thanks for reading! and I wore low-top hiking shoes for the approach, Mr_Burns.

I take too long making videos!
Get with the program! :)
I almost went there yesterday to bag exactly that patch of snow. I was going to go with my son, who is recovering from having his wisdom teeth out, but he was still in pain so we decided to put off September skiing for another week. Options right now are probably Heliotrope (if he can handle that hike), heading out along Ptarmigan Ridge and looking for snow, possibly around Goat Throat, or hitting your Postage Stamp.
I've been looking at the Flett from work the last few days. Now I'll have to go check it out. Thanks!
Nice report! Brings back some nice memories.
We hiked to Panhandle gap on Sunday. Some snow still there for some short length turns and foolin around.

Great report! Super photos and really nice writing with lots of useful information. I've been wanting to head this way for a long time. Just wondering- what type of shoes did you wear for the approach? Great to know there is still some smooth-ish snow out there.
Congrats on 70 TAY! I hit 70 the same time and much different experience. All about the aspect. Paradise Gl. mostly corn and fun, and all alone.
