I'm glad a dog owner saw the humor in my post- your pup looks like a shambling monster coming down the trail would not phase her. Probably look at you and ask "for real?"
It's a funny thing about streaking. I know my family will also support mine, if just to get me out of the house.
A decade is an unreal thing when you really get down to it. You survived traveling, sickness, partner less trips (well, some of us without hounds!) and unpleasant skiing...

Thanks for the report, Mike. Having the dog in the pictures is great for perspective on the sun cup size. For me the streak is a means to an end... staying in shape and staving off old age :-) i tell my kids "someday I'll be too old to do this...BUT THIS IS NOT THAT DAY!" And off i go...
Great video. A cross between watching a rodeo, and a Bare Grylls show. Fresh snow coming soon...
I know it seems cruel to suggest, but are you obsessevly goal oriented? HA! Ashamed I was too lazy o make the trip!

Thanks for the September report for this area! Also, I love the way you worded your note of caution, well said!
Thanks! Both of the scariest things I've witnessed/heard in a decade of backcountry skiing were in the search for too-frozen early-season turns.
I envy your postage stamp. I ski those in the summer too, but mine require a pretty good walk.
I laughed out loud at this. Thanks for the great story!

Choose slope angle/aspect carefully -- it's not worth trading the winter to come for a few extra turns on last year's leftovers.

Just realized that I didn't have notifications coming to my email so just saw your replies. Thanks for reading! and I wore low-top hiking shoes for the approach, Mr_Burns.

I take too long making videos!
Get with the program! :)
I almost went there yesterday to bag exactly that patch of snow. I was going to go with my son, who is recovering from having his wisdom teeth out, but he was still in pain so we decided to put off September skiing for another week. Options right now are probably Heliotrope (if he can handle that hike), heading out along Ptarmigan Ridge and looking for snow, possibly around Goat Throat, or hitting your Postage Stamp.
I've been looking at the Flett from work the last few days. Now I'll have to go check it out. Thanks!
Nice report! Brings back some nice memories.
We hiked to Panhandle gap on Sunday. Some snow still there for some short length turns and foolin around.

Great report! Super photos and really nice writing with lots of useful information. I've been wanting to head this way for a long time. Just wondering- what type of shoes did you wear for the approach? Great to know there is still some smooth-ish snow out there.
Congrats on 70 TAY! I hit 70 the same time and much different experience. All about the aspect. Paradise Gl. mostly corn and fun, and all alone.
I've been very impressed with the speed and efficiency of the road work this year; the new road looks great; can't wait to bicycle it!
Great to hear you're back, Jimmy! Thanks for introducing me to Heliotrope way back when; it's one of my favorite slopes (nice wide ones fit my skiing ability best!)
I look forward to skiing with you in a few months. I had both knees R&R'ed, and they're not quite fully baked yet.

Welcome to TAY!
Those tape-skins are unlike anything I've ever seen. Nice work; it's a surprise that they worked well!

Great job! That's always been one of my favorite runs -- stay to the west to avoid crevasses, and you can get great snow all summer long. I once got caught in a snowstorm in August, dropping over a foot of fresh powder while I waited it out.
You're absolutely right; in summer, you want to be a little earlier to avoid it being too soft. I usually aim to reach the top around noon, eat lunch and drink a beer, and start descending by one. If you're really motivated, you can...

Great photos of the area. When we were there in October 21, 2005, the ski area was closed and the area was in the fog and clouds. Plus the snow level was 1000 vertical from the base. We decided that walking on cinder for 1000vf was not on the days plan. I due remember the gravel road. Your TR is great.
I remember when lordhedgie took a bunch of great photos of skiers in the Pinnacle Slush Cup around August 2008 or 2009, including several great ones of me!
Glad to have you back in Washington, and stoked that you got out to Heliotrope for August turns!!
Also, Rusty Knees, we need to ski together soon!

Don,
I'm over in Oak Harbor - sadly far from any mountains. But I have a car, and I'm not afraid to use it!
Def ping me - I always love a chance to ski. I don't have AT bindings on anything but fat pow skis, so until I fix that I'm bootpacking up snow. But that won't show me down much this time of year...

Nice job Mack! Lets do something in September together and I'll help you celebrate!

Hell yeah!!! You guys are awesome!!! AUGUST!!!!
In 2005 Jill and I backcountry toured there because the ski area was closed. We were the only folks in the area. It was fun to ski around the Monkey Puzzle trees – made for some great pictures.
In 2007 we were at the area during the ski season. We skiied out towards the geyser building. No one else was in the area.

I was having a hard time imagining the whole place covered in snow. Thanks for posting the pic. When was it taken?
Early May 2010
Very cool to see August pictures of this zone, thanks.

Beutiful aesthetic line thanks for the report.
Love the lines in that first picture! Thanks for sharing.
Looked like this on 8/7! Pretty smokey in the morning followed by partial clearing. This run won't last much longer!

August 7, they had the loop road closed so no parking at 4th Crossing. Slow traffic due to paving on the front side and work on the sidewalks of Nisqually Bridge. Parked at Visitors Center with the hordes and walked the regular Muir trail to 7200. Decent skiing, but the air was horrible.
Yes, they said they would be closing the Paradise Valley Road to repair winter...

The road to TH is so rutted that I think one big October/November rainfall will make it all but undriveable. I suspect that forest service doesn't have funds for maintenance and/or hiring more personnel or whatever but I would like to know. Sad.
Sounds like a great trip.
We went up the Phelps Creek road a couple years ago and it was a wallow-fest i...
Skied that one a few times too, fun slope! There's another north fqcing one before the end of the road which usually does persist until the snow starts falling again.
Here's a link to one of our trips there under similar atmospheric conditions:

Nice Mack,
We were there on 7/31/17, no skis, just heavy backpacks, headed out on a multi-day ramble through the Olympics. Congratulations on your string, hope it continues for many more years. We met a fellow who has climbed with you in the past during our rambles, PM me for more info.

Good paradise update too thanks.

August 6. Thanks for the details, Silas! With my great ski bum buddy Chuck and son Sean (2nd time ever on AT gear.), followed your path except skinned from end of dirt trail up to bench below Anvil Rock. Snow a tad sticky at 11 AM descent, but it's freakin' August! A great 2400 of vert, and a gorgeous way to return from my recent trip to central Japan. Month 238 in the books...
Very nice trip and looks like some decent turns for this time of the year. Thanks for the photos.
Hey Robyn! How lucky is that? I only came back to this one to add the pics since it was just enabled and I got to catch up with you. I will send you a text next. I enjoyed hanging out with you two. Also, the people at fifth season were pretty free with current info when I was down there so you might give them a call or maybe someone local will chime in.
