Great report & adventure.  It's on my list for the next year.

"Disappointing to hear about the trail condition.

Is this what "starving the beast" gets us?"

I was there last week (hiking with my daughter) so I can attest to the fact that things are deteriorating.  The road to TH is so rutted that I think one big October/November rainfall will make it all but undriveable. I suspect that forest service doesn't have funds for mainten...
Hey hey! It's Robyn from Poulsbo/Tahoe! Was just checking to see if anybody had been up Shasta later in July to see if it's still worth carrying skis up there & stumbled on this TR... what a fun day! I wish we had gone on to climb Shasta afterward though, we probably could have rented some poles at a shop. Glad you enjoyed the time in CA (and beers :) ), don't hesitate to get in touch if you ever make it to Tahoe for some skiing!
Great reads, btw, Ron.

That ski of the devastated area brings back great memories...of particular note, that was volcano #2 I had skied naked!

Talk about no-fall skiing.
Pete, I think the dots in the first pic are you and crew. Hood sure looked great on the drive back home.
I don't know cascade mystic, are there copyright issues with children of the corn?
Great TR!

Disappointing to hear about the trail condition.

Is this what "starving the beast" gets us?
Great TR, photos and narrative.  ;)
Nice day! We had no idea at the time that the Park would be inundated from fire smoke and haze from  the north!
Mike, thanks for enticeing me on this great trip, one of the best of the whole year!

Mike would have you believe this is a little hop skip and a jump trip.......it's not, but it is great value in spectacular country.  Fast travelers could do this in a day but it deserves more time to enjoy.

Oh, and thanks for that picture of me crawling on my belly like a reptile!
Thanks for that! Very refreshing as I sit here in the Okanagan Valley in the 38 degree celsius heat choking on forest fire smoke!
Great, thanks Charlie. Heading up tomorrow to take a peek at conditions.
Photo upload still is not enabled for July TRs.

Thanks for the great reports guys! Has anyone been up there in the last week or so? Looking for beta for August turns!
I like good rum and ginger beer with ice and lime in the summer time.
Forget drones, mw8 is now public enemy one with his boom box! We need those bolt cutter guys back for comment. I also object to people who bathe before entering wilderness areas. As I return from a tour nearing a trailhead I am attacked by other citizens soap smells!
Thanks for the thoughts MW88888. My work involves interacting with the disabled, diseased, and dying. So I was just thinking of one of the human perspectives.
Your idea of a Starbucks in the middle of nowhere is intriguing! :)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qs4mtbTsaL4
Thanks for the TR ZigZ, looking to attempt Glacier Peak, just as a hike, this Fall to close in on the volcano quest i started WAAY to long ago...
Sorry Zig, thanks for allowing the TR to remain, good education on drone usage for folks.

I don't think of wilderness areas as for "human elitist", but as a way to help protect some areas (perhaps far too few?) from the obvious abuse of humans.  When we try and provide access to all, what truly constitutes disenfranchisement?  It's a slippery slope, isn't it.  Better to leave it unspoiled - if we can.

Those elk, moose, marmots, bears, and all kinds...
True that, RonL, Thanks.
I think about that quite a bit Pinch. It does feel exclusive at times. Of course there are lots of non human things out there that call it home regardless of our designation.

Fortunately, the beauty of the mountains exists for more than just your friends and family.

... I'm just thinking of the Wilderness here...nothing really to do with Drones... I don't think many people stop and think that the "Designated Wilderness" is almost exclusively accessed by able bodied, fit, young(er), people only. The disabled, elderly,...

Fortunately, the beauty of the mountains exists for more than just your friends and family. I clearly posted a link to the regulations put out by the forest service in my initial reply that you obviously did not read. This issue has been brought up many times and your pleas of ignorance ring pretty hollow. Unless you've been living under a rock you are aware that drones aren't allowed i...

Wasn't 100% clear on drone regulations and still am not. Feel free to send a link where I can find more information on regulations.

Thanks for your response -
The regulations are clear and simple: NO FLYING DRONES IN WILDERNESS AREAS, PERIOD. That includes the drone footage you shot illegally on Mt. Shasta. it is your responsibility to know if...
Sorry to offend anyone. Sharing the beauty of the mountains with friends and family...

Wasn't 100% clear on drone regulations and still am not. Feel free to send a link where I can find more information on regulations. I'll take a look also.

Rest assured, other parties were well off mountain, but if it's illegal then that doesn't mater.

Thanks for the information.

If I had hiked that far to get to Glacier peak, I'd be all that much more pissed to have drone buzzing around.

I'd recommend GP for a few more weeks with the skis! Why not?

Here's a recommendation: Leave your damn drone at home! As a pilot I take particular offense to ILLEGAL drone flying. Sheesh. (I guess this is more evidence of the "entitlement society," aka 'rules don't apply to me.'"

OR?
came to TAY to say this. Went up 7/24 with some bros; skinned to Illumination Saddle. Still a ton of snow and fun was had by all. I think I'll go back soon. Truly a turns-all-year season.
Wish I still had the Chouinard firn gliders!
The sheer exuberance of it! Great fun!
Nice to able to ski to the top of Pine Martin. :)
Word!

Figls are always good for a smile.

Back in the day, there were lighter variants like the Kneissl Bigfoot. You might be able to find them for sale somewhere.

The Atomic ARC figls were made for racing, so they're pretty beefy. Actually, I think one of the main contributors to the weight of the ones you borrowed is the bindings. I have a pair with lighter bindings, but they're not as adjustable, so I gave you the heavy ones. The figls you borrowed be...
Love the picture, speaks volumes about all the fun you had.
Matt, nice to see the FIGLS in action. I used my FIGLS which were in the same look, color and bindings years ago. Last year I sold my pair to a person back East.  Glad to see the FIGLS on snow.  ;)
Thanks buddy! Yep I bought an annual volcano pass so I'm good to go next year maybe slightly earlier in the year so not so many carries  ;D
Bravo! Way to represent as the only one with boards!  A great reason to return to a great mountain, go get those chutes next year!

What you cannot see in these photos is the (apparently) wall-to-wall bergschrund below the Edmunds headwall nor the full extent of the one on Central Mowich.

Routes that depend on seasonal mid-elevation snowpack to cover very difficult features are in dire straits on Rainier. Back in May I couldn't see a way from the top of Gib Rock down into the upper Ingra...

Snow line is roughly 6k. Skeeters are horrendous down at the trailheads, less so up high. Don't forget the DEET.

Confirmed. Don't forget trail shoes.
Is that Jack Sparrow's dad on skis?

Good to hear the report!
Your photos provide the "words". ;)
glad to see you're enjoying volcano season!
Thanks for the beautiful pictures of a great place. Great to see a new generation meeting the mountaln goat and skiing that basin. Bikes were an excellent idea!

Great meeting you, Jim. And thanks again for the great pics and video - and sharing that gulley with us! A great day indeed. We also got tacos - Taqueria Los Jarritos in Mt. Vernon on the way back to Seattle. 5 stars after a day of instant oatmeal and energy bars.

I literally stop at this place every time I come back on 20. Heading up 20 - Jorge's Kitch...
those are great, thank you much!
