;D The video is great! Nice work making tele turns Hummels! Some funny stuff mixed with nice corn.

The video is definately a tribute.

Come home and lets make some turns Kilowani!

.....ski day 8 and counting......
.
Did you get any good looks down towards Blanca lake?

Nope, couldn't see that side of the mountains from where we were.
Lovely video guys! Really gives me the sense of your adventures I've been reading about. Nice climb, ski, and documentation. Thanks for sharing.
I really enjoyed your video- seems like you guys had a good time.

Did you get any good looks down towards Blanca lake?
Jerry - don't leave your toys out if you don't want us to play with them.

Ron - thanks for getting a picture of me standing up.
Excellent video Phil. Nice work!
And you can hear some of what Jason says around me in this video - (11 minutes, 22MB).

(don't worry Jason, I edited more stuff out from the version I gave you  ;) )
Thanks Paul for twisting our arms.  That was a great tour, even with minimal skiing.

Those skis!!  The worst color cordination ever seen: green skis, blue bindings, and red boots.  I'd have to ski in the dark...or whiteout.

A few photos: Paul posing, another Shuksan shot
That slide-for-life from out of the frame is classic!
Nice pics Michael.  Looks like you had a great day.  Thanks for posting.

Paul
It wasn't me... I was really good.  It was Darryl -- he kept touching me... and Amy.

Nonetheless, there was fun to be had outside the Bronco:

Freshies on the way  ;D

A few more pics HERE.
(Edit to add...
It is about 13 miles round trip into the Basin, further if you want to climb anything or more snow falls and eliminates access to Barlow Pass.

BTW I loved the icecave! I regret not pulling out my flashlight, although I don't think that it was much deeper than 20-ft. Still cool. Oh, and thanks for the laughs Phil. I got to watch what I say around you ;)

nicely done phil - how far is the approach?

Good to see some action despite the warm conditions out there.
what time did you guys arrive back at the car?

Got back to the car a little before 6:00 . . . looked for you at the usual feeding zones, but I guess everyone was already fed and gone.
I guess I should know better by now than to gather too much information before a ski trip...

The less information, the better!
Looks better than the mush we skied. Good call on the horizontal smoke, from our veiw point it looked like a cloud. We were wondering as we enjoyed a 2 hour lunch in the sun 8) nice trip boys.....Jerry

I think it was definitely smoke/steam. It started in the crater at St Helens and drifted eastward once above the rim. Really cool.
The headwall definitely looked to be out of condition, not because of avi danger but crust. We didn't have time to go all the way over to it, but could see it's shady blueness looming not far off. And yes, it was very pleasant in the breezeless warmth of the sunny park. Getting to Grand Park from so much farther down the road than I've done before has given me some new ideas for spring access...
Great photos! That is an incredibly beautiful side of the Mountain. We had thought about VTP for skiing Sunday, but I read on the Park website that the trail was "closed" so didn't pursue it any more. I guess I should know better by now than to gather too much information before a ski trip...
nice photos you guys.  Michael, the lights off one is romantic..  oh, i like the lens flare one too...

see you guys in a few days... muuuahhhhaaa!!!
Yo Adrianne, You're right, there were certainly a lot of sliders in the p-lot at Paradise compared to the numbers playing around the Paradise area slopes... and no Muir TR's??
They must be hiding all their Muir stashes, eh? ;)
Too bad we missed you and Josh up there... maybe next time.
Nice trip you guys.
And great Pictures!
I'm glad we didn't join you though, we skied out with artificial head mounted illumination the weekend before... what time did you guys arrive back at the car?
I actually had a good time out there with Andrew on Saturday morning.

It was a perfect day with high temps and blue skies.
Some pics:

Skyline Lake

The photo below shows one of the best bowls that the Elfin Lakes trail cuts through, Matt. At least it had the nicest snow  Saturday.

Bob
Maybe too much avy danger on the GP headwall !
Nice trip Charles. It must been nice to be out in that sun.

Thanks for the information. Especially on the access, and snow bridge thickness.
sadly, it was an empty beer can...  I'll post some pics later tonight.  It was pretty runneled all over the place from snowmelt.  Good coverage though.
Nice job, guys. We saw your car in the parking lot and wondered why anybody would want to park so low. ;)

Of course, I imagine you got untracked crust, where we suffered with the tracked-out crust.

Nice photos, too.
Anyone know why would a snowmobiler put a can of bush light under my tire?  though it was kind odd...

A couple reasons come to mind.

1.  He proly felt your struggle and after skinning behind the exhaust of a 2 stroke, you deserved it.

2.  Or that particular can fell out and was abandoned by his family.  In which case the whole shake it up and give it to somebody theory comes to mind.  You had to see the co...
Any pics?  Curious to see what the south side is looking like....
I skied that bowl yesterday ,aswell. Started at Paradise,
across Edith basin and across to Bundy's. I was surprised when we got there to find no tracks on Bundy's. I dug a pit down to ground at the top od Bundy's and the snow was wet all the way through with accumulations of really saturated snow right at the bottom 1'.
Big potential for wet slides on steeper slopes  this weather continues IMO.
It skied Ok and then up to Mazama back bowl. That was corn at top , icy in the shade and...
What - a visit to GP and no mention of laps on the Grand Park Headwall?? maybe it wasn't in condition or you guys just weren't up for it!  ;)
4,000 ft East Coast descent=sweet.
Nicely done, Jonathan. Thanks for the bringing the East Coast stoke!

Perfect weather on the mountain and we didn't see another party all day. How many people were at Paradise today?

Nice! Getting out to Newton Creek is definitely a great conciliation to yesterday!

And in regards to being leisurely,
We left the Hood River Meadows lot at a leisurely 10 am
I was still in bed at 10am.  :)
Allyson: glad to see you make use of these Dynafit bindings (I think these are the ones I brought back from Europe for Kam almost 4 years ago?? - about time they get used ;-) ) this makes one less snowboarder to convince ;-) !

The trick Lowell mentioned is what I have to use all the time for my bindings, so try it out and hopefully it will work for you.

Good to see you all made it back home safe.
The slope he rode was of the same angle, elevation and aspect as the slope he saw slide.  In fact, it is on the same ridge, maybe 100 ft away! My question would be, why did he think it would be any safer?!

First the visibilty was poor, with blowing snow, So I misjudged the aspect beacuse I couldn't see the surrounding topography.

Second, This was a very short slope, which my underestimating its dangerous potential was a very seriou...
Nice to hear you scored some good weather, Bob. I have yet to play in that area that is so close to home. We charged through there on our way to the Neve last year. I would like to return to seek out some powder. Thanks for the TR...
it seems when i tried to yard on the lever, it only lifted one click--but i'll give it a try with the pole technique, and see if that helps.

Hmm.  I bet you have the first generation Tri-steps. My second generation toe pieces did not have a click mechanism. Pulling up on the lever just tightened it in a continuous range. Sort of like driving a wedge underneath a door to stop it from swinging.

I don't know if the technique I suggested app...
Nice meeting you today, Gus!

I would like to clarify that only Dave (another pic) and I skied the chutes...Amar had some important business at Muir to attend to...or something.  ;D

Hannah was there, too, she insisted that going to Muir the previous day was not sufficient...or something. ;)

thanks for the tip, lowell.  it seems when i tried to yard on the lever, it only lifted one click--but i'll give it a try with the pole technique, and see if that helps.

The first time I used my "Second Ascent"ed old dyna-fit bindings, I had the same problem.  I use my ski pole strap, but try to make sure that the strap doesn't pull out of the pole when I do it.
If it is like mine, when skinning it should point...
If they're the original tri-steps, yanking up on the lever won't help, since it only goes to one "notch".

To really lock the toe, you have to use a tool to pull up hard on the lever. Dynafit recommended using your ski pole, held sideways like a handlebar, to pull up on the lever.
