Great.
That's what we like to see.
Should get some more snow over the weekend.

Zap,
Well executed 007 on the Ski Pass, and pleasant journeys to the south.
So what did you miss at the top? Well, you really can see bubbling lava splattering the walls of the crater - suddenly seeming very close on the precipice overlooking the sputtering red hole. The lava was cool, but the sound was scary. Deep angry groins and rumbles - if you've ever been in an earthquake you know the sound, and it's unsettling.
And gas mask is right on. By the end of a 15 min...

Nice reports Zap. That's too bad about Jill's tooth.
A gas mask needed to climb a volcano? Cool!
I like your usage of your Mounties card! ;)

I might come out in January for a long weekend and join Gaper Jeffey at the Whistler rando race (scheduled for Jan 7). Would be great to meet up w/ the TAY gang then.

Thanks for the tip Greg :D, nice video Jonathan. Finally we are getting some cooler weather around here, so maybe we might get a bit of an accumulation.
Jonathan, when are you going to be out this way again and make some turns with Ron and I?
I am deeply jealous.
And I suppose that this is the day after tomorrow, no? :)
Enjoy it!

They have yet to even turn on the snowguns anywhere.
I didn't hit up that area of the mtn - lower elevation, and very exposed to wind. Upper Killington Peak, Glades area, upper Snowdown, all completely "in" even though only October.
Driving back home, 3000' lower by the gondola base, completely bare.

Is the manmade glacier coming in on Superstar yet?
I grew up skiing Killington and Mt. Snow. Never thought I'd see reference to them here on TAY. Thanks for the memory trip. Way to get some snow!
Nicely done, Jonathan. Bob looks like some kind of a bump skier.

You know why they call it Royal Flush? Because that's where all the poop goes from the summit lodge..or at least it did back in the day. Go East Coast, Yeah!
Nice pics Kam - finally good to get out with you since the course...it's been too long. Thanks for everyone's company, it was a fun day under bluebird skies 8)
Your memory of the upper slopes is still very applicable. The rim covered ridge is still there. I used the binoculars to get a closer view of the surface on the upper slopes and it did not appear skier friendly. The lower slopes were perfect.

Verrry nice. The 'friends' pic is particularly heartwarming. :)I concur.
Great photog work Kamster.
Hope to see you next month.

Termas de Chillan. A magical playground. A funked-up European style ski paradise in the middle of nowhere.
Highlights to contrast your experience: getting stoned with some Chileans on the sun deck watching the end of a South American ski day fade away; sleeping in a cave underneath - no, behind - a pencil-thin waterfall; clipping bolts on the newly bolted routes on the access road across the street from the ski resort, and subsequently meeting the author of the routes w...

After reading your report I'm inclined to think the upper slopes of the mountain are in perpetual bad form.
On our tour of the mountain we found the upper 1,000 VF to be some of the most technical skiing of our whole tour. it was great to see everyone! more photos below. it was fun exercising my camera in the mountains again. i find that practicing in the urban environment of Richmond isn't quite the same.

Wow, so many memories coming back, Zap, this is so fun reading your report...some thoughts:
When we skied there, we camped in the Paragua (your "Monkey Puzzle" trees I assume) forest and were serenaded by the wildest screams I've ever heard while camping. Scared the shit out of us as we tried to sleep for the night. Turned out to be a version of a fox (or so we deduced from the fuana section of one of our guidebooks). But in that surreal forest, in the dead of night, it could...

hey Jonathan. it's good to hear that snow is falling in the east! even down south we're experiencing cold times. the weather today in Richmond, VA is quite cold. snow is expected tonight in the Blue Ridge Mountains nearby. if we get just one nanoinch i'm going skiing!
Skiing among monkey puzzle trees is rather memorable.
MY OH MY!!
snow, skiing, mountains, and one of my favorite trees!!
you've just got to share photos of this!
best for safe travels,
jessica
The same effect that also works for videos; here's my touring partner on upper Royal Flush:

Hmm... Which photoshop effect did you use to get all that whitestuff in the photo?
Snow is forecast for the suburbs of *BOSTON* tonight. TR from yesterday coming up soon. (I feel like a bit player in some ecological disaster movie, celebrating the unusual weather unaware that it portends the end of civilization or something...)
´Matt-when I return home I´'ll post some photos. Skiing among monkey puzzle trees is rather memorable.
Hankj - just read your info on Pucon after our arrival. Staying at La Tetera, run by a Swiss couple. We will eat at Trawn today.
M88888 - we could be another bandito couple when we cilimb/ski Volcan Villarica without a permit.
More volcano reports today. It has been an incredible adventure.

I was through that way a few weeks ago on my way to the ferry, carrying skis (but without maps, knowlege of local terrain, or visibility). Looked like lots of good touring whenever the low cloudcover parted, but the closest I came was a quick hike partway up the glacier on Hudson's Bay Mountain, which would have been totally skiable were I able to see farther than fifty meters or so. I slept overnight in the parking lot at Shames, surrounded by spectacular ski terrain (again subject...
jonathan--thanks for the report from the east side! i grew up in nh, and so have a special place in my heart for the wicked awesome whites. ;D nice to hear that you all are getting some winter out there too...maybe you can send some of that our way...
hope you get lots more turns in this season!

It was great to meet a bunch of TAYers. I planned to wait to ski down with the posse, but the call of the corn was just too strong. Next time! ;)
Wow looks like fun! Sorry to have missed such an awesome gathering....next time
Since probably no one else on this board is familiar with those mountains, how about some pics, so we can enjoy some stoke? :)
You can start to skin around ~7400 feet - just up from where you meet Pebble Creek; it's approximately 2000' vertical from the lot before you hit continuous snow. From there I was able to skin up the whole of the snowfield, though some took off their skis for a short carry-over at one point. Same for the ski down.
The skin time from 7400' I'm not so certain about. The memory is fuzzy today, but I can say in total we spent in the neighborhood 4 hours from the lot at...

To those who went on this trip, how long was the walk (in minutes and/or in vert) before you finally put on your skins? How long was the skin up afterwards?
Juri - I'm glad you managed to recover a bit of that hero snow that our brothers and sisters had their way with the day before you.
The clip at the end broke off of one of my skins somewhere on the way up. Is it fixable? If you mean the little tail hook that is on the skin attach configurations with the elastic rubber piece at the tip bail, they used to make a repair kit for that system:
It was great to put faces to so many names. The TAY community never fails to impress me with the quality of its members. Thanks!

We were with you in spirit and talked about you guys the following day (Sunday). We were all pleased that you managed to hit such a great window of weather and skiing conditions. May we all hit many more together.
On Sunday Jeanette,...
Conditions for the 2000'+ vert ski descent were a mix of uneven frozen ice (ugh), smooth frozen ice (pretty nice actually), and some softer snow at lower elevations (very nice). Snowpack resulting from the three feet of recorded snowfall ranged from massive drifts to thin layers of ice, with just about everything in between.
You were right when you said you missed fall and plummeted right into winter for your first NH ski of the season. We ha...
yes, this was a fabulous day--a nice surprise too, because i was not expecting it to be that good. fun seeing the whole gang up there, but i agree with michael--
your presence and your infamous delectable bbq items would have been the icing on the cake! 8)

I've climbed it more times than I can recall without a bit of effort.Holy ambiguous sentence, Batman!
What a great day and perfect weather window! Seeing the weather today I am so glad we were out there yesterday!
Thanks for all the great pix to everyone, it was great to see the usual TAY crowd (where the hell was the RonJ team though ;-) ?) as well as some folks I hadn't seen in years.
PBelitz: the "unkown skier" is Kristina, doing her first descent on the Muir snowfield.

I've never skied during my birthday week before. This glorious blue bird and buttery-sweet-corn day was a true gift. Thank you all for your presence. Kristina, I especially appreciate your company during our long lunch. Lovely photos from all to remember this for a long time. Thanks!
Hope to ski ya soon!

Yes, Muir was outstanding yesterday! I guess you have to take those bluebird spring-like days when you can find them, even in late October.

The Muir hut has been refurbished and is in prime form with new cabinets, cooking area, paint, concrete floor and expanded bunks which should be able to accomodate close to twice as many climbers as before.

Creamy, buttery, goodness was definitely a phrase of the day! It was wonderful to see so many TAYers out there, and missed a few, as well. Here are a few more pics:
