It was a sweet tour. Now just need to figure out how to post the pics! My arms are still sunburned 8)
Congrats Lowell! Was thinking of you while we were over near Logan hoping your trip worked out.
Thanks Scott - it was a fantastic day. Keep in mind that was third time lucky for me!
Fantastic job guys! The snow bridge in the second picture is the one that stymied us on Tuesday. I'd like to think that four days of warm weather was the reason, but probably we were just too wussy.
Thanks--I made the first movie public now, so it should work. Grab the popcorn!--Art
Outrageous, I love this trip for the fear factor in several locations. Nothing like the knowledge you've got the swollen afternoon creek to deal with after you make it through everything else. The first video is marked "private"...can you loosen it up? Thanks. David
Heh -- fair enough. I've seen some of the pictures of you and Josh's antics :)
Nice work guys. Glad to see you got on top of it so soon after rainier, eric.

Nice job Jason -- looks like that crevasse crossing on the upper Nisqually was pretty sporty! How was it on the way down?
I'm probably not the best person to ask. It didn't bother me, as I just pretty much glided over it with only a momentary look. My advice, keep your speed up to clear it ;D.
Sounds like a great trip! That's the first ski descent from the actual summit of Snowfield Peak that I've heard of.

Nice job Jason. Do tell how the Goat Rocks went thereafter............rough with the full pack?
I love the goat rocks and will write up something for it soon. Every time I go there, it's a lot of fun. Right now there is a lot of blow down, and its better to go cross country if you are familiar with the area.

Nicely crafted report, Jason.
Sweet climb; congradulations to you all.

Wow, that's a killer one-day! Way to go and get it done. I've posted a link to your TR on my website. 100 Highest climbers will want to see it, that's for sure. --Scott
Amazing Lowell! :) Congratulations. Oh the places you've been. ;D You've definitely got me motivated to keep on moving. --Scott
Awesome guys! Big Craggy ski -- great idea. Really enjoyed the TR. I posted a link to it from my website. --Scott
Wow rainex, the miracle cure. Saved my life many times when the wipers broke. Now this. Maybe its not pollen but squished ice worms or some other form of biomass or algae.
Congratulations Lowell, that's quite an accomplishment! Kudos on the website documenting the trips too. It reads wonderfully, is well designed and the photos are great.
Another epic car camp Memorial Day trip!
Lucky for us that Kam brought a wind-up siren so that he could alert us of imminent dangers. Of course, he first had to yell at us to be quiet so that we could hear the siren. It's pretty effective.

Joe, thanks for leading the procession. I did my part in bringing up the rear. Amazing about the lack of pollen. I expected to be walking down to Dewey Lakes. Sometimes you just luck out.

great photos guys (i especially like 'wu manchu' ;D) and another memorable memorial day trip. i was glad to get out and enjoy some washington mountains again! and as always there were lots of laughs and funny moments. thanks everyone for coming out and for making the trip such a blast--see you next month! 8)
Thanks so much for posting the report. Am/was/still maybe thinking about it for this weekend...

Wow, that crevasse needs a ladder! Nice work and good call on playing it safe.
I think the glue BD is using is not what it used to be...I have found some great solutions to both cleaning the goo off and keeping it off...white gas and a rag makes short work of cleaning, and today I tried Rain-ex on the dry clean bases. It worked great! Kept the skins cool before taking them off so the glue didn't soften too much, then pulled them off like a bandaid...no sticky goo to collect the pollen, and perfectly clean bases after quite a bit of very dirty skiing. The Rain-ex seeme...
Good job! Looks like pretty interesting snow conditions. Good decision on leaving those bridges alone.
Another congratulations, Lowell! The map and especially the spreadsheet really show what a huge undertaking this has been. Looking at the last photo, it appears that David decided to take his waxless skis after all. Were there stretches where the fishscales were put to good use?
Congratulations girlz ! :D heard about your plans and was concerned you wouldn't be as fortunate with the weather like in the N. cascades where i was.
yeah, those painful hikes out.... nice work all of you!

What's your system with the Megamid (if anything special) -- seems like a great way to get decent spring shelter at light weight. What kind of pads/tarps do you use underneath?
Marcus:
This was my first trip using the Beta-light tarp. The tarp is very light and I was happy with the way it performed. I set it up on my ski poles and staked it out using...
Awesome Lowell -- that's some beautiful terrain.

Wow..Congratulations Lowell on finishing your goal! Also great job, Tom and David!
That is quite an accomplishment and a test of endurance and navigating skills.
How light did you guys pack?
Seems like there would have been more creek crossing than just the one using the ice ax.
Great job!
Joe

Edit: Lowell, how did you determine your TOPO mileage correction factor?
I plotted the route of the Devils loop trail near Jack Mountain and compared the TOPO statistics against the guidebook mileage. I also compared against other routes that I no longer recall, licked a finger and stuck it in the air, and chose +13%. The nice thing is that I've got all the raw and c...
Congratulations Lowell, thats a magnificent accomplishment. I bet it felt great to stand atop Glacier peak.
Nicely done, Lowell.
Edit: Lowell, how did you determine your TOPO mileage correction factor? TOPO does underestimate mileages in my experience.

re: Ruth: we left at 10am, got back to the car at 5pm, I think. We weren't rushing.
It was good times! Always special to be skiing or riding on the holiday that kicks off "summer." It will be interesting to see reports from this upcoming weekend as to the impact this heat wave has on the glacier. Many thanks to the folks who set the boot pack out of the moraine - it was much more efficient than breaking out the skins again.
Kam et al. - We ran into you at the very beginning of your descent from the col. Good to meet you all. Despite the discussion about how the snow was probably better on the blue lake side, we opted to ski down the backside to the hairpin anyway. It was better than we expected. Pictures coming soon.
Hi there. How long is the ascent to Ruth Mountain? Did you do the slog in a day or an overnighter?
Thanks for picking me up in Tacoma and letting me tag along; that was a fun trip with some great skiing! Here are a few pictures from my camera:

Did pollen give you any trouble that far south?
Nope, I didn't notice any on my skis at least...
Zap - your skis are wonderful. thanks!
when are you going to Argentina and Chile - I hope you provide pictures and some guides as I am planning that for next year.
The sprain was very minimal and I should be OK for mild climbing and biking by end of week

Great TR and gorgeous photos. Love the sunrise photos.
Sorry Charles I'll get the pics down to 3. Done!
Telemack is the the Hotlum/Wintun Route. According to rangers Forrest and Matt the south side, Avi Gulch is cupped to all hell. West side, Hidden Valley is still holding up. Maybe Giddy Giddy. In a month it will be either melted or bumped out. Bad snow year for Shasta this year.

more TR and pics at Twin Lakes Couloir
The Sept 1984 issue of Rock & Ice magazine has a good article about the first ski descent of the Notch Couloir by John Harlin III and Jimmy Katz.
Good fun! Since I'ven ever done Shasta, some questions:
-Is this TR of the standard/Avalanche Gulch route?
-Think there will be enuf snow for a climb and at least partial ski in 1 month?
-We'll be at the OR Shakespeare Festival last week of June. Am I pipe-dreaming to try and drive down to Shasta and hike in during an afternoon/evening, then send the thing and drive back to Ashland next day?

I was also at Glacier Basin last saturday. Yes it is still alive and well, once you get past the wonderful new route of 1 trail-less mile. It was quite tedious at times negotiating the wreckage. The trail was totally gone! I was amazed at the extent of the damage. I would say it tacked on an extra 45 min for me each way. I talked to a group of rangers on my way back who were scouting out area...
