Cheers Zap - I'm still waiting for pictures of the camper van critter!
Man I miss adventuring with The Brit!
You skinned right past Flying Pie & passed it up?!

That one's been on my bucket list for awhile, moreso now because I can see it from my deck. I might have to go looking for your skin track next week...
Jay Mon: There was enough snow to ski to the bridge but probably only about 6-8". After the warm weather this week I'm sure it's totally different.
Another awesome TR.  I loved my one and only trip to Mammoth last June.  I was lucky enough to meet a local who showed me around. We ended up doing a cool boot pack from the top that ended in a run to the closed canyon lodge.  Love that you debated between parking in the shade and parking right by the snow.  I had the same debate and opted to park right by the snow in the mill lot.  Car ended up like a greenhouse and all my ice melted but I was stoked to be literally ...
Sierras are so great! Easy access and laid back scene.
I've never gone up on the ridge, I just kind  of cycle the Blue Square areas, breaking right just before the trail goes into the woods is a good way in, to the waterfall. A few sleds and a million snowshoes keep the 2 mi of flat groomed to sugar most of the winter. Weekdays are so quiet back in there

Looked likely! Crossing to the west on the lower glacier let us avoid the main river channel. The "walking" also involved a lovely scramble up a waterfall under the bridge.

FWIW, the easiest way to finish the west side exit is to ski under & past the bridge about 50 yards, then boot or skin 100vf to the parking lot. Aim slightly back up valley; ign...
Gnarly.  Good job choosing your Dad. 😂

I think on the E side of the river you can still make it without any walking.

There was coverage all the way to the bridge but we had taken off our skis for the easy stream crossing so it seemed just as simple  to walk- it wasn't really and both of us had some shocking post holes. Seemed like it would have been nice skiing all the way down from Camp Muir but we were concerned about the state of the snow down low- it was pretty goopy along the river.
I like your trip report. But you walk a quarter of a mile to get to the bridge wow.
A fine and pleasant trip report.

...I think it's an under-visited area which is a shame since it's great up there. I have probed different ways up for a few years now: The easiest so far is the Toilet Bowl, early in the AM when it's all nice & frozen West facing. I have got up to Lake Lillian via Rocky Run, but the traverse above Lake Lila(I think) is also steep & prone to wetsides. Early on I went directly up from the sno-park, but was stopped by the south spur of the Rampart Ridge summit block, which I...
How much snow was on the road out?
Great trip report. It reminds Jill and I of when we skied the face. It was the end of the season so we rode the lift to the base. We were met by two ski patrollers who said it was okay to climb in ski the face. Skins with crampons to get up to the turnaround point. Steep steep steep terrain with perfect corn snow.
Wow, nice work. I look up there often and wonder who might be venturing out that way.
I spend a few days a year on the slopes below the grinder and up valley past the waterfall.
little loops above the cabins
Sweet line. The first time I saw a photo of Magic, I was convinced that it had to be in Alaska.
Those first two pixs are so motivating!!!!   ::)
Correct - descend to the lake then stay in open area west of creek.

The slope itself should be good skiing for a while yet, but the valley to John Wayne Trail will melt out this week - so you could climb back up and out the regular way.
Sweet thanks. I take it you descended the west side of the creek drainage from Lake Annette.  I have always wanted to try this.  Aside from low snow are there any other major issues to know about?

Are [snowmobiles] allowed up there?

Apparently, yes: https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_MEDIA/stelprdb5285903.jpg

Down. Como se dice... steep?

Empinado, pero ya tu sabes! Bien hecho amigos
Nicely done guys, beauty of a line!
Wild Yellowstone! Glad you were able to experience and support that special place.
Thanks for the report. I was on the south ridge of Granite the next day flowing some pseudo-corn, suppose it's time to start driving farther than the beloved pass. What a terrific winter it has been.
Guides are not required.

Such an amazing place....many touring options in Mt.  I'm heading to that area in 2 weeks...are guides required in Yellowstone?  Where can I contact this guide you mentioned?
Thanks for the report. Looks like a neat spot.
Thanks Ryan....I hope you are doing well.
I saw them in the parking lot early too, must have got wind there was some action going down with control work.

Not 100% sure what the official rating for Tues and Wed was but it is certainly a good time to avoid areas where glide cracks and climax avalanches are known and of course overhead hangfire.  It was probably considerable Tues over all elevations and considerable above treeline on Wed and moderate below.  That's my guess based on touring both days.  Also...
Hahaha! I would have loved to have seen that reporters expression 😂😂
Nice work, getting the goods👍and glad you survived 😀
ha--just found out there's a news story

We were met by a news crew when we got back to the parking lot yesterday. It was somewhat amusing after spending the morning skiing stable blower pow... and suddenly being asked questions like "If something happened, would you blame Search and Rescue if they didn't come out and rescue you?"  And I was like hell no, do I look like Donald Trump?  nah--I would never blame them, I take full responsibility for my a...

no runnels whatsoever on the menu...

author=cumulus link=topic=40553.msg161171#msg161171 date=1524110701]And yes, still excellent today,

Holy cold smoke! Awesome!

We had a little of that at Mission Ridge on Monday, but it's all wind hammered now and ski-able still, but just barely.
good eye Kam--yep, that's the one.
I like how it has a slightly sinister anime look to it... but maybe that's just me

Funny about that track Haggis...yeah prob not certified. Put in by a climber, I think he just likes vert ( :

Was up there again today as well--sorry didn't see any lifters, would have picked them up if I did!
And yes, still excellent today, heavy mush with pinwheels on the last leg... the in between was good tho, with a little help...

My friends said I should show up next year to try and claim the geezer prize -- but I said - the winner looks good and is likely to be there next year anyway!  Cheers.

lol.  On the slog up Down Under I always ask myself why I'm doing this and to remember the pain so I don't do it again.  Unfortunately, us old geezers don't remember anyth...
