Thanks for the great photos and comments. It brings back memories of the year I was there with a couple storm days and more powder and sunny days. I was a "fill-in" and I met some great folks. ;)

were you in the group with the girl that got caught in the slide on enterprise and nearly pushed into a crevasse? ya, coolest hut location i've ever seen. can't wait to get back there
yup that was us. scary stuff. storm slab triggered at a real bad time. coulda been worse tho and rest of the trip was a blast! cant wait to go back indeed!
I have seen snowmobile carried skiers a couple times. From what I remember they mainly did stick to the mapped forest roads and I don't remember being particularly bothered. I'm pretty anti-snowmobile in general so if they were doing something iffy I probably would have remembered.
An excellent trip report! thanks for sharing

glad you had a great trip! we were out there the previous week, a lot less snow coming down and only slightly better visibility. what an insanely cool place to put a hut!

Awesome trip and that snow looked so great!
I've been once to FM. There is a gully across the Gothic Gl that shares my daughter's name, Freya. I went over to ski it, and had the same experience you had, with weather coming in, we turned around at the top and hoofed it back without skiing the good line. I recognize some of the tree areas, especially that gully across from the hut. That was a fun line.
Thanks for the write up. Really fun to read. Great pics.

You guys been hitting that peak hard! Keep up the shred
My understanding is that snowmobiles are permitted to use the Hidden Valley side of Hyak after 4/15. My limited additional understanding is that they are permitted to use the forest road which switchbacks beneath the Rampart area, too, to access the backside terrain. Of course, I could be (and probably am) wrong, but I do know that they are permitted to use the nordic trails and terrain that extend from Hyak to Ollalie Meadow after 4/15 and the north side of Silver Peak (mainly the north bowl).
Respect to those riders. Great day. One of the best ski tours from the parking lot....with the best views on a clear day.
Thanks for sharing.....Yes the dry snow is a different experience. It also requires a more keen eye in regards to stability....and when to ski objectives safely.
Interesting. I figured it was all in the details of Summit's use permit. Just didn't know what those details were (or how much control of the land they retain when post-season).

That backwards worm chick-dance tied for first for the pizza sized cookie prize. The guy who tied promptly dropped some of his and his dog scarfed it.
Sleds are excluded from the permit boundary during the season. But once the nordic center and hyak close -- sleds invade.
It's provably never been tested legally -- the summit operates sleds over their permit area during the season, but private sledders seem to respect the groomed areas during the season pretty well.
Sledders are pretty well organized and one of their big concerns is having more areas closed off to motorized recreation -- so I think sledde...

Going to look forward to hearing that TR in person, perhaps trail side if nothing else.
OP, some good stoke, thanks for posting.
The group who did the North facing mazama ridge said they had decent turns, the looked pretty good from our vantage on Skyline but the elevation is very low for the high temps. Paradise turns were really fun and I've not skied it before so very enjoyable to get somewhere new for me. Probably could have made Muir but we opted to spend the additional hour before gate closure enjoying apres ski refreshments with feet up looking at the mountain and there was nothing wrong with that!

Fun pics (though I'm tempted to second the "shhh" comment by Matias...shrug).
You'll have a good time skiing with Beau. I grew up in BZN with his (now ex) GF and have skied into the craters of a couple NW volcanoes with them. Great skier, very knowledgeable, uber fit, quiet. A Cooke City hermit, no doubt!
Cooke is a strange and wonderful plac...
I'm not positive but I highly doubt that it's allowed within boundaries even when closed... and that probably includes pre and post season also. I know that's the case for Stevens Pass. Stevens has signs posted 'no snowmobiles' on front side within boundaries, but they do allow backside / Mill Valley post season. If it's allowed, then it's a share the trail deal. If not allowed, then it should be enforced. Last year 8 snowmobilers...
Heroic effort on your part given the late gate opening and the cement conditions.
We opted for some west facing closer in . Kinda funny skiing ,the cement had thickened to a point our fat skis stayed on top. But dont make a mistake ! The crew that went over Mazama ridge mite have found some snow untouched by the sun on the North aspects.
I agree with you on gate notices. It's usually up on twitter by 7am give or take.

Yup, 9737 is pretty exclusively the winter access route to the south side of Stuart.....
Well....there is always the splendid x-county northside approach from Mtneers Cr & up & over the Stuart Glacier Couloir, or any of the other fruity routes. Just add time & calories.

Man, that's yummy delish. Nice job!
I guess the nearly to the knee following boot steps in picture 4 helped quell the voice in your head saying "turn right!"

That's like 10 miles down from the esmerelda trailhead? Best to wait until that road is melted out until going up stuart, or is there another way to get close to the south side in the winter?
Yup, 9737 is pretty exclusively the winter access route to the south side of Stuart. If you got a few extra hours, skinning the road isn't totally unreasonable...

Yeah I want to go, Rusty who used to work for NWAC moved to Bozeman and says it's great
Thanks for the report, been through there when the road over Beartooth is open skiing on the pass, but your turns look great. A serious commitment to get there, some of my sled neck neighbors go every year and rave about the snow.

Well then, there you have it!
Drove the snowmachines up to Esmerelda Basin. As of last Sunday there's snow on the road beginning at 29 pines. It's patchy for the first half mile, but pretty solid after that.

I've been thinking about if it's worth it to do the public service of shoveling out that snow wall.
Most of the winter, drivers will encounter a steep, snowy section of impassible road less than a mile from the berm. That berm helps keep the wheels off a sometimes groomed skating surface. Please do not remove the berm to save 15 minutes...

Ruth is awesome! I've always wanted to ski that Chilliwack amphitheater.
I usually do Ruth as an evening approach day ski. Doing a 2 am start to 7 am finish with a post sunrise nap and skiing all the way to icy and back in August is one of my fondest memories: https://vimeo.com/48181242

Has anyone ever put in a camp and lapped those beautiful amphitheater lines down toward the Chilliwack?
Thanks for the feedback. I think you just made the case for making it an over-nighter, to explore that terrain NE of Ruth.
As a day trip, it's always a long approach, with lots of valley floor and traversing, for what skiing you get in before you have to put in the deproach time to get back to your vehicle. In the winter (which I've done a couple times), there's plenty of going over enormous avy runouts to factor in. The way to do it is to time it right, whether in late winter or in spring/summer, to not get munched by wet slides and having to ski schmoo, to get the stable pow or the corn...

Long walk indeed. Ruth has its devotees but the day trip joyometer is a low ratio.
Having never done this trip, but have always wanted to, do you mean the joymeter ratio is ALWAYS low or only in this case or early season when the road is impassable? Thx
Nice report. Looks well worth a visit. The Sawtooths really are an under-appreciated range, and I expect many people want to keep it that way ;D
Long walk indeed. Ruth has its devotees but the day trip joyometer is a low ratio. Absolutely stunning views of the Nooksack Cirque and the rest of the N and E faces of Shuksan, and standing on Ruth and seeing how you are standing on the headwater point of three major river systems in two countries is extra special. Has anyone ever put in a camp and lapped those beautiful amphitheater lines down toward the Chilliwack?
But they won't avoid the warmup of today. Expect partially-refrozen mank below 4k and variable conditions above. There's still powder above 5k, though...
