yeah I slept at around 6K from the 1st to the 2nd of May... central/N. Cascades.

May 1st was a swirling drizzly fog of a day with fairly uniform mushy isothermic snow on most slopes (about half a foot or more new from the weekend).
Really cold that night with everything frozen in the morning... put on ski crampons and switched to booting on steeper slopes. Variably supportable crust. By 9:30am S/E slopes were cooked with cornices dripping and crumbling, while the other northern s...
Thanks for a great TR Jamie!  Couldn't have asked for a better group to do this with.  For what should have been a miserable sufferfest, it was really a great time.

My feet start quivering when they get within 10 feet of my boots...it might be a few days yet before that relationship is healed.
Great to be hearing about the adventures in the Sierra.  Funny how that big empty lot was verboten.  What would a night out as security be without rousting a nice couple?

You guys can appreciate this - finally made it to the San Gabriels this year (March) to ski Baldy bowl, wishing and praying the snow would be good.  It was merely "ok" but beat non-existent by a long shot.  And those LA denizens are a very happy bunch to be around, must be all the...
Free beers just elevated this route on the radar - any clues to their location?

Sledders poached summit

Stupid SOBs.  The USFS needs to step up enforcement.  Leaving the Rec. area is way too common.
HA!  Very good.  An "A" for persistence and creativity!  Once I got to an alpine route and I asked my partner to take out the rope - his eyes got real wide!  Ahhh shite.
Great TR. Love the improvised traction devices.  You going back for the beer?  Someone needs to go on a rescue mission. Lol.
it was a fun day, and i was glad to get a chance to mop up the last of the good weather stretch.

I'd love to see any photos from your crew showing the conditions of Cache col, Magic mtn, and Hurry up.

hopefully better late than never! (click to link to the full res version).

Looks to me that one of the seasons weak layers got lubricated and slid.
Not sure it happened during the recent sunny spell. IMO it more likely happened during the following wet spell  at the end of last week and this weekend.
That's what was worrying me when I saw people touring steep terrain this weekend with bad spacing protocols.

Pure conjecture.
Anybody know when it slid?
Maybe not touring during the first significant warm up of the year is a good place to draw the line.  I'm sort of surprised at all the TRs from people that went out during what was a very significant warm up following a cool, wet late spring.  But to each their own.
Boy Lowell, talk about dodging a bullet, that thing would sure break your glasses!  Great tour, and your timing was perfect!
Left the summit about 4pm after hanging out up there for 1.5-2hrs. Had a very leisurly day. (left Seattle after 6am that morning.)
You are making  me nostalgic for  my last tour with the dog we had before  our current  one. He was a great outdoor partner but had somewhat  gimpy hips  so  generally he didn't go touring  with me aside from when there were bulletproof conditions with perhaps a few inches on  top, or reliably consolidated corn skiing which typically meant laps at a close ski area. So our last tour together was a mellow outing at Mission, during  which I went fairly slow on the down and waited a l...
So glad we did this, Jamie! Thanks for the report and the great company. Here is a posed photo from the top of our last run. We all tried to look strong, but I can see fatigue in each of us :)

For several years, I've observed an informal ritual of touring at Crystal Mountain right after they close in spring. I like to tag a few high points, enjoy the spring views, and mark the closure of the lift skiing season.

Awesome..going to check them out...so disappointed with the Denali...bruised clavicles ..welts on hips...butt cramped...ugly picture for sure..scapula too...great it theory..but if it brings you to tears with even a tiny load as well as the occasional big load....
Thats a bit sobering!
I was in the ski area on Sunday mainly for touring fitness training( it sure wasn't for the skiing).I stayed mainly on the groomers as the snow conditions were atrocious and snow was 6" of rain soaked mush.

Big wet slide down Powder Bowl crossing the cat-track.

Saw group of 4 putting a skintrack( or boot pack..couldn't see in the mist) up towards Throne shoulder..... hate to be that guy ... but they where all bunched together, no sp...
We've been using Deuter exclusively for 7-8 years now. Radka's day pack is the Guide 30+ SL and overnight is Guide Tour 35+ (she also has the Guide 40+ for climbing\hiking). I use the Guide Tour 45+ for skiing and Guide 45+ for climbing\hiking. The Tour has a dedicated compartment for beacon\shovel\probe and the regular Guide has a dedicated bottom part for sleeping bag and whatever else fits. I don't know if Deuter still makes the Guide Tour though as I can't find it on thei...
Say ...what brand/ type / sizeof packs you using...i have a gregory denali which kills my back...even with a small day load (my flimsy millet 40 L is super comfortable so I use instead..want to take the gregory back to rei at some time..bought before the one year return deal..)?
Here is some video from our trip.

Okay, that's spooky.

Our ascent of Silver Basin on April 24 went right up the middle of that slid...
what a fantastic trip and great photos as always.  I'm so envious you got to spend two weeks down there... Becky and I got in a way-too-short four day trip in March 2017 and it wasn't nearly enough time.
Hey thanks for the photos! Looks awesome. What time did you all start skiing down at?
Wow... awesome trip / write-up..monumental for sure...
Thanks so much, lovely pictures, as usual, we drove 395 last year so lucky  to hit the big snow. Down that way for work last week no, where near as much snow as last year. Food, beer, hot springs, snow, don't need much more than that!
JasonH has photos and a sweet TR here: http://www.myadventurecrusade.com/2018/04/29/mount-rainier-ski-circumnavigation/
Sounds amazing! Nice work. Got any pics?
Nice pics.

Everyone should know- if you utilize a hut that is maintained by volunteers, you should-

1- bring hut booties (shoes).
2- dont kick snow off ski boots in hut, or on door jamb.
3- cook outside when you can.
4- leave it better than you found it.

5- (list can be added to by others).

Just posting because huts "exploited" on the internet tend to become more visited (imagine that). As a result, Winchester Hut is now clo...
Thanks for the great pictures and report, looks like some serious digging was involved. Weather looked flawless as well!
I'd love to see any photos from your crew showing the conditions of Cache col, Magic mtn, and Hurry up.

Nice work!
Aw yeeaaaah. Tried that one a while back but we got turned away by spooky deep snow. Glad you guys sent it
wow, i knew sleds were powerful now, but i had no idea they'd be able to climb any of the walls that lead to the summit
I think your party was more fit.
By ski backpacking, do you mean ski touring?

Looking fwd to some traverses when Cayuse Pass opens.
Cheers Zap - I'm still waiting for pictures of the camper van critter!
Man I miss adventuring with The Brit!
You skinned right past Flying Pie & passed it up?!

That one's been on my bucket list for awhile, moreso now because I can see it from my deck. I might have to go looking for your skin track next week...
Jay Mon: There was enough snow to ski to the bridge but probably only about 6-8". After the warm weather this week I'm sure it's totally different.
Another awesome TR.  I loved my one and only trip to Mammoth last June.  I was lucky enough to meet a local who showed me around. We ended up doing a cool boot pack from the top that ended in a run to the closed canyon lodge.  Love that you debated between parking in the shade and parking right by the snow.  I had the same debate and opted to park right by the snow in the mill lot.  Car ended up like a greenhouse and all my ice melted but I was stoked to be literally ...
Sierras are so great! Easy access and laid back scene.
I've never gone up on the ridge, I just kind  of cycle the Blue Square areas, breaking right just before the trail goes into the woods is a good way in, to the waterfall. A few sleds and a million snowshoes keep the 2 mi of flat groomed to sugar most of the winter. Weekdays are so quiet back in there

Looked likely! Crossing to the west on the lower glacier let us avoid the main river channel. The "walking" also involved a lovely scramble up a waterfall under the bridge.

FWIW, the easiest way to finish the west side exit is to ski under & past the bridge about 50 yards, then boot or skin 100vf to the parking lot. Aim slightly back up valley; ign...
Gnarly.  Good job choosing your Dad. 😂

I think on the E side of the river you can still make it without any walking.

There was coverage all the way to the bridge but we had taken off our skis for the easy stream crossing so it seemed just as simple  to walk- it wasn't really and both of us had some shocking post holes. Seemed like it would have been nice skiing all the way down from Camp Muir but we were concerned about the state of the snow down low- it was pretty goopy along the river.
I like your trip report. But you walk a quarter of a mile to get to the bridge wow.
