Went up Sunday with my friend Doug. "What a difference a day makes." That's what we heard 3 times from folks who said they had been up the day before and could get up without bare spots. But today it was bushwack city in the clearcuts. Still, snow skiing in June when it's hot enough for air conditioning on the way from and too ain't bad.
Right on! What an adventure that must've been. How many years did it take you?
Looks like someone has a helmet cam ;)
Nice work Silas!

A few more pics online. A long day in good company. And _I_ see the allure of the SW chutes (what's wrong with using all your elevation at once? Ski fast, babe :p).

Hooray for Silas! He's a wild man. Sounds like a good excuse to throw a party....
The views look sweet.
Sounds like you had some a-pollen conditions. I read a post last night that said to use a scraper regularly, to freshen the wax and prevent getting grabbed at by the vegetable matter.

HI Scott - thank you for your reply. My posting signature is in Norwegian and is based on a list of 9 "sound mountain advice/knowledge rules" that were developed for an accident prevention campaign after a particularly bad Easter vacation in 1967 where 18 people lost their lives.

It was a pleasure celebrating your birthday with you too! From sunrise to sunset -- it was a perfect day (aside from the pollen, of course).

It was nice meeting you up there Eli (on the trail at least). Glad that you had fun. It was a great day!
Sweet Oyvind! I love that route via the Cowlitz and Ingraham. I posted a link to your TR on my website. That's a big 1-day ascent -- way to get it done!
Hey, what does your posting signature mean?

Mack,
Nice trip. Glad to see the crags released you long enough to do some skiing. I was really wishing for a belay yesterday with all the security of class 5 rock. Today, I'm trimming the roses while Chris and Sidnie are off to Interglacier.

Welcome back to the knee-knockers' club, Michael. :)
Michael -- good to hear you made it to Little T. sorry to have missed you, but i'll see you soon.
Lowell: that's a very nice photograph -- well composed :)
Thanks Michael - it's been a great week! I'm planning on heading south next weekend for a change of scene.
We were able to ski to and from the road just a little below Windy Pass (maybe 100 yards past someone else's bumper - lotsa cars from the Bushwhackers and Mounties groups that were up there along with multiple ski groups). But it involved a little bit of maze-work and 2-3 very short stretches of skiing on branches and logs (worth it for the short drive in my book). It will get rapidly more bare. We managed to still ski 1000vf continuous snow from NW summit ridge down toward the west, but p...
Nice pictures Andy - I see that your busy week on Rainier goes on :)
A little late in coming, but for those that were interested in seeing some pics of the area, I've finally got around to linking Mike's TR:

Nice to see you're back on "this side" for a bit and having fun, Michael.
Thanks for the report, Michael - Magali told me how "greet" the skiing was. Would have loved to join you on Little T, if not in the creek!
We didn't rope up at all,but that is up to you...You can just hike the creek and skin up to about 6500 feet without getting on the glacier and have a great ski run(or more than one) Ski crampons would come in handy in the morning(if you have an early start) . Have fun,Pred
I'm pretty sure it was you guys we saw up in the basin that evening. We were the snowboarders above you on the ridge. We opted to ride out the east basin over the west for our final run home. Did you guys ski the logging road out or retrace? The best turns to be had are off the ridge where there is less pollen. From the summit the west slope looks iffy. I'm sure theres some fun turns in there but it will be gone in a week or so I bet. I took a photo of you guys at your high point from...
Very cool Michael! I'm slobbering just thinking about that run down the Fryinpan. Killer. It's great to see folks heading up Little T. Yes, the rock is a bit crappy at the top, but it's worth it. As you say, the view is amazing. Especially down the north face!! I've posted a link to your TR on my website. --Scott
Thanks for your tracks Andy and Claudius - they definitely helped us when we went up two days later. What a great mountain!! We were happy not to see any signs of the Claudius indigestion event at the summit ;-)
Looks like you guys had a very busy Rainier week end!

Yup, we're still amazed that we had such great weather all day long. Especially considering that we were in a downpour the whole drive home!
You can climb to the cleaver on the left instead of heading onto the Nisqually Glacier. That way should be fine. But it is significantly steeper. I think up that way, then down the Nisqually is a good strategy. Skiing over crevasses seems much safer to me than climbing over them; perhaps I even used equations to illustrate that on this very website once upon a time. Fuhrer Finger still looked pretty good yesterday. As long as you don't mind skiing over ro...
I know that Skykilo was up on the mountain again, and he would surely know better than I do. But...in my opinion it seems to be melting out fast! I think that it will still be pretty good for a few weekends of skiing off the top, although the bridge we crossed on the finger won't be around for long. Maybe if you went climbers left before 12.5 you may be able to find another way to point success. Mike's blog http://www.mountrainierclimbing.blogspot.com/ has good updates on the mountain....
Good timing on this TR as I am planning on heading up to Heliotrope ridge this weekend. Wasn't planning on heading up too high though. How far up is it good to go before we would need to rope up? How's the skiing on the ridge or in that area? Our plan is to head up on Saturday and spend the night and get some more turns in on Sunday. Sounds like the hike in from the TH is pretty good as well. Thanks.
Congrats on your trip. It looks like you had great conditions.
Two days? That's fast.

Jason et al,
I'm curious: how long do you envision the more important of bridges being around? Between your pic and Andy's description, I gather they're going fast.
In any case, well done and, per usual, fantastic photos. 30 keepers out of 4 days is good odds. Well, for some of us.

Nice job. I'm eager to see more pics. That's some great country - so close and yet so far...
I'm glad you liked that photo ryan. I actually had my settings set up wrong and pretty much messed up four days of photos, but 30 or so turned out pretty good (I have a few more I haven't pulled onto the net, but will have up later). I've become a bit obsessed with learning my camera and trial and error are my weapons of choice. A wise man would read the manual before he changes things. Ha. Not me (!) I read the manual afterwards. ::)

we skied the Summerland area on the 27th and followed most of your tracks up to our objective. It was a good day and good snow was had. I sure wish we were able to follow your tracks up higher but the late hour forced us down and out. A few of us weren't so lucky with the stream crossing on the way back and ended up in frying pan creek. Thanks for setting some tracks for us to follow.

Eventually, I'll add a webpage for this Glacier Peak trip.
Done.
My website documentation, which has been a major project by itself, is finished. For the Glacier Peak segment, see:
Skiing the Cascade Crest - Glacier Peak via White Pass
It was a sweet tour. Now just need to figure out how to post the pics! My arms are still sunburned 8)
Congrats Lowell! Was thinking of you while we were over near Logan hoping your trip worked out.
Thanks Scott - it was a fantastic day. Keep in mind that was third time lucky for me!
Fantastic job guys! The snow bridge in the second picture is the one that stymied us on Tuesday. I'd like to think that four days of warm weather was the reason, but probably we were just too wussy.
Thanks--I made the first movie public now, so it should work. Grab the popcorn!--Art
Outrageous, I love this trip for the fear factor in several locations. Nothing like the knowledge you've got the swollen afternoon creek to deal with after you make it through everything else. The first video is marked "private"...can you loosen it up? Thanks. David
Heh -- fair enough. I've seen some of the pictures of you and Josh's antics :)
Nice work guys. Glad to see you got on top of it so soon after rainier, eric.

Nice job Jason -- looks like that crevasse crossing on the upper Nisqually was pretty sporty! How was it on the way down?
I'm probably not the best person to ask. It didn't bother me, as I just pretty much glided over it with only a momentary look. My advice, keep your speed up to clear it ;D.
Sounds like a great trip! That's the first ski descent from the actual summit of Snowfield Peak that I've heard of.

Nice job Jason. Do tell how the Goat Rocks went thereafter............rough with the full pack?
I love the goat rocks and will write up something for it soon. Every time I go there, it's a lot of fun. Right now there is a lot of blow down, and its better to go cross country if you are familiar with the area.
