the cascades are awsome mtns,,, taller than the rockies!! the snow is crappy though ;)
Yeah, but Tim, the weather never behaves. So many variables in the mountain weather.
I was anticipating a relaxing lunch on top and corn on the Wall on the way down. With no place to get out of the wind, I had a quick bite to eat and headed down in what seemed to be fresh snow on a carvable base. Sometimes you get lucky with conditions. When it's clear out, as it was on Wednesday, the views are extraordinary, although sometimes brief.
They say that is it a sign of insanity to repeat the same behavior and expect a different outcome.
About a month ago I skinned up the C-D on a sunny Tuesday following a snow storm on Sunday and a broken clouds Monday. I was hoping for pow on the Roman Wall and corn below. What I found was pebbled ice above the saddle, breakable crustd to the Grouse Chutes and sticky slime from there to the bottom.

Lisa, are those parallel turns you are making on tel gear. ::) you will be banned from the knee droppers club if you continue that. ;D Nice report , glad you had a great day.
We we up there on Saturday. I'm glad you made it. Check your PM's
That's awesome. Oh to be able to ski and then get a half day of work in....
Nice report Aaron and Doug. It was a fun day skiing with all these kids. Yeah Joe, I put you in that category. Our first descent was in Fear Factor and it was great to have Carol jump right in to become what I call "the skimmer". Skimmers are usually required during late spring/early summer tours when the slopes are a bit lumpy and have a bit of debris. The skimmer makes first tracks, smoothes the surface, identifies rocks and other debris and communicates the info to the more senio...
According to the lobsterman of Winter Harbor I "sailed all the way from Washington state" when I lived there for a time in the early 90's. So, you "sailed all the way from the state of Maine" to ski in June. Welcome to where the sun sets into the sea.
That was great fun and thanks for waiting for me. Next time I think it would be a good idea to do the west more open slopes first then work back to the east where the snow is more shaded by cliffs to avoid the afternoon "hissy fits". Here are some pictures

Temps start rising and the knee starts dropping. I guess the secret is out huh...
There are more pictures at my new Tips n' Tales weblog.
Thanks for posting the report and pics Aaron and Doug. I took some video on the cam...

Thanks for the excellent tour of the area guys! We were pretty impressed with the quality of the lines and the amount of coverage. I'm definitely hoping to get back up there soon -- looks like lots of cool terrain to explore.
Unfortunately, no brats were consumed afterwards. An unfortunate omission, but the skiing was good enough that we weren't too sad :)

Fun times at the chuting gallery! Great to have such excellent coverage in the chutes on the opening weekend of the Sunrise Road this year (and nice to ski a couple lines that are usually too melted-out by the time the road opens). A few photos from Sunday are posted here.

...i decided to make some more turns feel htings out,, i readyied my axe to my backpack, checked my harness, and started truning,, as i crested a funky horizontal rib the snow steepend to about 50dg, and the nieve became incredibly hard, i didnt think it could get much harder that the nieve above,, but this was damn hard nieve,, i new that this was no place to be on this day,, and anchore...
Nice job, I was up there on Monday as well. What a beautiful day!!!
I think I woke up around 4:30 as the first group set off and then followed, hitting the trail by 5:00 or so. Made the summit by 11:45 and then skied the southwest chutes. Might have been a good choice to avoid the chutes as the upper 500 ft were rime ice. No fun. Things soon transition to hardpack and then some very lovely corn for the last 2000ft of the run.

Here's a shot of Darryl dropping in at the top of "fear factor".
Ron - thanks for leading a great tour and for not posting the pictures you have of me "dropping".
Stella C , by all means go further west to second Burroughs and chute out the multiple ski lines there to the north. Between 2nd and 3rd burroughs lies a pocket glacier .And beyond that 3rd burroughs with the easiet skiing but best scenry for a tour. We often combine lunch at 3rd and then take a steep line off 2nd down into berkeley park ,smell the wildflowers then skin or hike up to 1st burroughs ski the NE shoulder down into valley and finally walk back up the Maintenence rd. I kinda repeated...
The earlier opening gave us access to to better snow coverage than we've had in years. Dege was in fine shape with a line off the north side that we never had coverage on before. "Fear factor" had the most snow in it that I've ever seen.
Also haven't had enough snow to ski down the front side to the car for years, albeit the coverage was thin and, as Michael pointed out, a well mannered ranger on duty pointed out that the vegetation on the meadow has such...

I'm heading down to Sunrise on Wednesday- I haven't skied their before. We will be hanging around for 2 days-any recommendations other than those mentioned in this thread?
We came in from east side off Hwy 97. Here's a trip report from Amar in 2003 where I got the idea............we basically replicated his route.......

did you drive to Mt Scott? Isn't the road on that side of the lake usually still closed?
Brenda and I had an excellent weekend at the chutes. Great to see and ski with familiar and new faces. Saturday we had a great time skiing with Marcus' group in low visibility and a brief blizzard. They nearly killed us as we tried to keep up with them booting up a long steep run that Ron J calls "fear factor". Fun ski down. We took a chance on the weather and returned on Sunday. We were rewarded with a much better day weatherwise. We didn't arrive until 11:00 thinking...

Yeah...my date stood me up for the prom(s) without even a call. Went to the dance solo and met up with a great crew that filled the dance card. :D
Nice job on the BBQ you guys know how to do it right!
Joe
There was dancing? A BBQ?? why oh why did i have to leave so soon???
I was also there with my teenage son for a Fathers' Day outing. Weather was much better than I expected (given the rain between Enumclaw and Greenwater). Another example of "You never know unless you go". The cool weather kept the surface conditions just right (soft enough, but minimal sloughing). Coverage was a bit better than the opening weekend last year. We did 5 laps of the chutes just up from the lodge. Best of the day was the 3rd chute ov...
Chris,
Yes,I always go first on these new lines. Welcome to my secret stash. The Bailey's looked really good.

We had a trip planned the previous weekend which was weathered out too. Boo Hoo. The sun will return!
He, he...glad that you guys had fun. We had 12 people show up this year which was a good showing for this annual trip of white pass regulars.
I would never push you Micheal, only coax you into position and then tell you to ski first. ;)
Way to go, that's how you take advantage of a weather window. Ha. I went east 8) but I nearly regret doing so after reading your report. That's a fun line!
Yea, if I have a insane Scotsman to push me over the edge.

I got scared just reading your trip report! Fine effort and thanks for the update on the SW Chutes. I guess a lot of pople are waiting for that weather window but alas this coming weekend looks just as bad.
Welcome to the PNW, as the previous poster said, " youse got big balls".

Good work,. you'll get that north slope when we have some better weather.
I saw you guys on Saturday but left early as the weather was really coming in. Went back up on Sunday with my son Stewart and skied two chutes but again left early as we had brought no food and my teenager needed feeding. On Sunday I nearly turned around at Enumclaw due to the weather but on reaching Sunrise it was dry and a mix of sun breaks and clouds.
chutes skied really well. I guess a lot of peple where put off by the weather.

Ha! Agreed, that looks more like a weather wall to me, rather than a window... Nice work!
Here are a few of my pics from Saturday.

Booting up a steep chute.

Anastasia skiing with faint figures of our party visible through the clouds. It wasn't a blizzard -- I had the shutter speed a bit too high for the conditions -- everything came out pretty noisy.

Today june 16th Holly and I joined forces with Park Ranger Casey and skied 2nd Bouroughs down into Berkely park. Lov vis but managed to open the jets once we traversed out above some rocks. Many good lines on Burroughs 2 ,pocket glacier to the west and entincing run between those two spires. Hisser management still nessecary on North facing,East facing xcellent back down into maintenece road. No pollen ! No Pollen! East facing Dege looks doable to me with ski tracks on it already. all sour...
We skied down between Antler and 6,951, then a nice gully to the same basin from near the top of 6,951. After that we hopped around and skied a thin finger into the bowls on far skiers right of Huckleberry, so we didn't get near Dege. Plenty of snow left to piece a skin track up there though. Have fun tomorrow!
Thanks for the report, Marcus.
Did you get a look at or get a chance to ski Dege?
At any rate it sound like there's still a decent supply of white stuff in the chutes. I'll try and smooth it out a bit for the rest, tomorrow.
Radio on 12-34 for anyone that wants to crank a few with the geezer.

Bike? What bike? Do you see any studded snow tires in that photo? Back when I used to ski (circa 2003), we skied lines way more gnar. ::)
Oh yeah, I'm biking tomorrow...he-he 8)

90+ degrees in the lowlands is key. Walking up the north ridge in trail shoes gives you plenty of time to scope out
What the hell do *you* know, mountain biker!! ;)
Ditto.
90+ degrees in the lowlands is key. Walking up the north ridge in trail shoes gives you plenty of time to scope out NFNWR and if it looks bad, you can always navigate the Adams Glacier or one of the lobes of the Lyman. It sounds like you have your head straight. NFNWR gets pretty tame on the upper 3rd, so it's easy to get comfortable and then find yourself on different (more firm) surfaces as the pitch rolls away beneath.

Conditions really are everything. Way to keep it together, Dan. The traditional approach is to hit Adams with a solid heat wave.
holy *&$%@! glad you're okay....
thanks for posting the conditions update....I'll keep my fingers crossed for a 90 degree heat wave in the next couple of weeks.

Dan - how do you ski with those huge balls swinging around? BTW - I'm very impressed with your ski of Longs a while back - that east face stuff is sick.
