Any info on the Hotlum-Winton?
Hot-tun as Fifth Season calls it is still skiable according to Shasta Climbing Rangers. Check the rpt. -- Shasta Ranger District. The weather will be better this wkend down here also.
Wintun is spelled with a u, Good luck
Sounds like a nice trip. Scotsman and I were in the Chutes earlier in the day saturday. I'm glad to hear the snow corned up in the evening because it was pretty soft when we booted out to Pan point about 2:00 pm.
I highly recommend the area, esp. if you've never been there before. My round trip time was about 10 hr., but I was alone so I cruised easy, esp. when my iPod went dead. I also took nice 30 min. breaks on the two summits, and the heat/humidity slowed me a bit.
Don't know if the bike would be worth it (I love riding up to Monte Cristo) - possible, but a bit of trouble to carry across the fallen trees. Here is a pa...

It was enjoyable to read your report, especially that your mom joined you. Those are special times to share. Jill and I have shared a few trips with Jill's sons and those were great memories. I have 5 grandsons in the "Grandpa Zap Sherpa School".
Your middle photo with the shadow of Hood is a classic.
So why weren't you carrying your Mom's skis to the Hogsback ? ;)

Finally got pics of the trip up.

As Mr. Doober mentioned, the Cle Elum River road was clear of snow except for one patch of trees two miles from the end. I imagine that is gone by now. Even last week someone had been in clearing trees from the road beyond this point.
The Scatter Creek crossing is deep ( for a minivan) but you...

Any info on the Hotlum-Winton?
Thnx for the info. I'm thinking about heading up that way maybe Fri or Sat. Sounds like a strenuous day trip and considering using a bike for the first/last mile. What was your car to car time?
way to go, j-man! that's some pretty gutsy stuff, hucking crevasses and all...glad the weather cleared out enough for you to tag the summit. 8)
Looks like Hummel didn't want to mention when we skied it a few years ago off the summit we got a nice big schrund jump where our line met the glacier. Josh went first, barely landed on the lower lip, avoiding a giant backflip into a massive black emptiness. Which of those smileys is for the puckered sphincter?
Your comment: "They have also not ventured in with skiers in mind, as there are a number of low hanging sections that made carrying skis more difficult than necessary."
Agreed, skis are like petrified tentacles snagging EVERYTHING above one's head. Rangers need to slap on some skis onto a pack big enough to make it impossible to tent the skis. Though, beggars can't be choosers - mother nature did her thing and our skis got to tangle with her work more t...

Nice pics Paul & Monika, sounds like a great trip where one of your legs was probably fatigued beyond belief as traverses tend to do! Maybe twin tips have another purpose - backwards traversing in the BC :D Would enjoy skiing that one some time.
Here are a couple of shots from a climb and ski of Stuart via Ullrich's Couloir I did last year on June 18. The conditions appear to be very similar now to then. Although the couloirs look like they may not go when viewed from Longs Pass they likely have more snow in them than it seems. Despite what we saw, we decided to go anyways and I was pleasantly surprised. It is a fun ski. The pics are of the climbing route in red up Cascadian Couloir and the ski r...
I carried my ski boots for the first few miles, then was glad to have plastics to kick steps in the steep firm morning snow of the trail (quite steep and tricky in places). I started skining about 500 vertical feet below Foggy Lake. I got about a thousand feet skiing from Gothic, then ~2,000 from Del Campo until I started booting down. I won't carry skis when I go back, but I had to try it out.

You may have skied right by us near the end of your return leg.
oh i don't think so. 8700' and what felt like circumnavigating the mountain brought us back to nearly an empty parking lot :)
always fun to explore new terrain ~ thanks Paul.
200' more and a lot less O2 we could have summited rainier that day, but glad i didn'...
Nice job Justin! We've got permits to climb over July 4th weekend -- sounds like the route might be a little *interesting* for skiing by then...

Nice!
From the Prow, I watched two skiers come down Emmons around 3PM on the 3rd. Lower part looked nice. Cloud deck at 12K kept me from seeing the whole route. I recall thinking that the corridor did look pretty damn narrow, narrow enough that ski tracks are going to get pretty bunched up in there.
One thing I shoulda mentioned in my post on the other recent Prow thread: wading the Inter fork isn't really necessary, even thought that seemed to be the herd instinct. Yo...

Thanks for the report and great photos. Did you have to hike all the way to the lake? Carry boots as well? Can you estimate vertical feet of skiing off the peaks? Thnx.
Great pictures Paul! Looks like Little T is becoming popular these days ;-) !

Great report that is a fun read! RonJ with some sweet action shots of some skiing on the PG. Looking good there Jeanette.
Seeing your pics and reading the report is the stuff that makes me homesick. On Sunday here in the former East Berlin we took an underground tour of our neighborhood "water canal." That translates to "flowing subterranean river of sh_t" in English. Wish we'd know the translation before we g...

Thanks for the report and great pictures showing the coverage or lack of.
Nice pics. We skied the Fortune Bowl (SE flank of Fortune) on Sunday, 6/3. The bowl was in fine shape. There was ample coverage to the glades just above the creek crossing, but not much snow below the creek crossing. We accessed via booting up Ingalls Pass trail, making it a loop trip. The slopes NE of Fortune also appeared to have ample coverage. The turns-to-grunt ratio on our loop trip was not great with only 1600 feet of downhill verts and 3000 feet of cl...
A few more photos here from our Sunday adventure.
Impressive trip, Paul Monika.

I've never met you Silas, but congrats!! That's quite an accomplishment. I'm with Sky- excellent excuse for a party....
RedGoesFaster, Nice TR. Remember, breaking trail for old folks is an honor and really appreciated.
Art, Perlin, Pete and I look forward to your skiing with us back at Stevens next season. But you do understand that we don't do TR about that. Plus if you start filming there, I can't guarantee your personal safety. ;)
Silas, ;)
Silas, ;)
I second Andy keep posting away. If I'm ever in Colorado though I'll have to remember to never to ski with you. :) Nice work man!!
Ben knew how to pick them indeed! I still think about his day, in which he skied the Roosevelt Headwall solo and then headed back up to ski the Coleman Headwall solo, as if one amazing ski wasn't enough! Nice job on the route you guys.
Hey Jessica,
Thanks for the pictures, especially of that guy in the orange. I didn't seem to get him in any of my shots. ;) I owe you some of that gal in the hat.
One thing I did get to appreciate was how much more pollen I built up compared to my lighter and wider-skied family members. More pressure equals more smearage and stickage. But still, no big deal to buff off with an old sweatshirt.

Congratulations Silas. Your skinning up video is hilarious - instant classic!
Really enjoying your crazy antics Dan - keep posting!
Kick ass Silas! That's awesome. :) --Scott
We were up there as well. Congrats to Silaswild. That skiing through the forest video is pretty impressive.
We walked down the steep forest bits. The combination of sticky pollen and that carpet of forest litter was just begging for a boken neck.
Did you have something for the pollen? We rubbed on not wax twice. We didn't have any pollen problems until we neared Crag View which we passed to the west instead of east. I think we'll try...

Yep, I'd say it was your gang, Robyn. Thanks the kind words and thanks for modeling to enhance our view!! ;)
Glad you missed the pollen.
Nice report and great photos!!
If it was taken in late afternoon (after 4 or so) those four people might have been my group. After lazing around at Muir we considered skiing down part of the Paradise glacier, following the same path as I had earlier in the week with dkoelle, but the flats at the bottom probably would have been miserable for the two non-AT alpiners. We found enough nice turns to make up for all of the traversing, and had no issues with pollen even down toward the car.

It depends on when you start counting. 58.9 years of life, 35.9 years after Mt. Baker, my first summit in WA, or 3 years since I learned I had finished 99 peaks of this little known list. The toughest part was remembering that I needed to do it, and in June for the most fun, ski to the car.
So now that I...
About this time 10 years ago at Chinook we had to ski for our life to beat the thunderstorm back to the car. It was everybit as exciting as the steepest chute. We made it to the car dry but before we could put our gear away we got soaked!
so much for lower angle warm-up turns before you get to the steep stuff!
Joe ,
the road is plowed and bikeridable down to Snow /bench lake trail head. seems like the Park ought to open it up at least that far ? there's room to turn around down there. After that it's probly melted out . i hear there is some damage to the stevens canyon road further down. From what I could see of Unicorn the upper to the summitt is now seprate from the saddle and below. IT also appears to have a glissade track rightdab in the middle! Could be a snowball or ro...

Not sure about the best route back to the car, having done a few traverses over slide alder on the way up, we chose a more direct line which led us to a nice stream crossing at 4000' followed by some careful sleuthing to minimize walking in the final 300' vertical. Total ski-less travel for the day was a couple hundred yards, snow is melting fast, easy Silver was fun while it...

Silas, you just too modest. You didn't even mention your milestone accomplishment yesterday. BTW Sherman looked spectacular from the freeway on my way home.
Yeah, you mentioned it like it was just another day out. I don't know how you do it all!
