Great report! I think I am going to work and quitting retiring today.
It's always great to hear about glorious days on the mountains!

Way to go Holly! Keep cranking out those mid weekers reports.
I noticed a lot of broken trees as well. I kinda put it off to the storm and regular avy destuction.
I will add this, the road crew at Chinook uses GPS on the pioneer cat . Seem like a good use of bucks. Road clearing usually goes pioneer cat - Yarder -snowblower . snowblower takes a beating when it hits a rock or tree. I'm not sure on the Sunrise road procedure. But as our sport has expanded and will continue to grow.we need more and earlier access. Easiest of all would be to th...

Wolfs, I noticed that aswell . I've spent quite a bit of time this weekend walking the road between Sunrise Point and Sunrise due to bad car shuttle management and there are lot of trees destroyed even in that short section.
We should find out from the NPS how it happened. I also noticed along the road that there is a raised asphalt shoulder with holes drilled in it a regular intervals for the insertion of PVC poles to mark the road edge. In many of them the PVC had been b...

Definitely a great day out there with my crew, I hope to ski with you all in the future...
If it's at all possible to get those photos from Bill or Scott I'd greatly appreciate it.
Here's my TR from my home forum back at Boulder: backcountryclub.org

Bayhoe, it was great to hang out with you up there! Hope to see you lots this winter, if not before!
Dougie, I cant get the pics to open, they are just red X's on my computer. :'(
Nice to be with you Jibber and Jason. We sure do miss you.
What a difference in 24 hrs. The day before ,Silas,Sidnie and I had been applyiing sunscreen and trying to talk Silas out of skiing a chute naked. ;)
The next day, I'm wet , cold and shivering in a snow storm.
The narrow chutes are going fast but it's still holding up and there wil be skiing at Sunrise...

Yo Doug!
Good to have you back enjoying the PNW mountains!
A great choice for a great taste of lines while you're in town. You were well advised to pick the scottsman for your tour guide.
It will be good to have you back when your euro tour is over.
I see google denies you the hot links -- that's such a pain; the group pic was especially fun.

It's good to hear that the climber with the broken leg had well-equipped company. While on Rainier Saturday, I'd heard the news and also inferred that the organized rescue effort was going to be an overnight affair. A tent must've made a huge difference for the overnight - the weather had turned lousy at Muir by ~6:30 pm.
Kudos to everyone involved in the rescue!

Nice photos! I remember too well the crawling under and over fallen trees. Also the water fall, hope to see you again.
Nice to see you again Merk, and likely we saw RonL and team heading off the summit as we skied into the basin further east, before moving to Antler. Dege at the end of the day was nicely smoothed by the earlier groups, thanks. Great weather, good breeze and clouds to keep the heat at bay. Frost feathers on ridge crest bushes earlier in the day indicated precipitation overnight, though not enough to show up on the snow surface. Hope to see today's report; 5000' FL?!!

We all need to be lobbying the park to get that Sunrise road opened earlier.
Ya know, one thing I noticed on the drive down was that there were various trees along the Sunrise road, those within about 10 feet of the road on the downslope side, that were just THRASHED. Small trees snapped off, big up to 2ft trees shattered as if they'd been dynamited at the bottom, man...
Myself, and father-son splitboard duo Jay and Jaime were out that way as well. Never saw your group, but we did run into Silas, Scotsman, and Sidnie who were making some fine turns off some steep chutes on Sourdough. We were up on the ridge at about 9 am. We ventured all the way down to Dege Pk (still don't know how to pronounce it) and then worked our way back towards Antler in the afternoon. What a great place to ski! I felt like a little kid walking through a theme park trying to de...
No, the gym came before the bar. But, hey come belay anytime. Fridays nights are always followed by the Reef or the Fish.
Anyhow, we did get a good run off the first burrough (?)... my snowboarder turned tele friend Tara did an awsome job side stepping down the steep chute we were funneled into. I had remembered seeing the tracks lead nicely into that chute on the hike up. I enjoyed the drop in, but I really thought that she would slug me when she got to the bottom. However, he...

Wolfs, shocked ,to hear that there was that much snow on the White river side. sounds like you had a good ski. We all need to be lobbying the park to get that Sunrise road opened earlier. Nice to meet you. You showed up while I was downslope checking out the 3rd burroughs chutes.
Jenn, does your gym have bar?If so I might have to go!

I sounds like you had an over great couple of days. I'm glad people are still going up to Muir, I'm planning a 3 day trip up to Muir the first week of July so hopefully the snow is still good.
Nice to meet you up there Robie.
I ended up going down into the basin toward the White River side. That basin is huge - must be a mile across. Runnels, but widely spaced so could put a line between. After that I shoulda done one of two things - go all the way down on skiers right and picked up the Burroughs trail at the bottom, or just booted up the way I came. Instead, I tried to slant over and pick up the trail midway but missed it somehow and spent far too much time sidehilling dense sli...

I wish that I had gotten up an hour early, but I did enjoy the beer and gym climbing last night that kept me in bed until 6, too late to join you.
I just read this and it makes me want to look at a map.
Well Michael, the story goes like this. Sid and I had skied a couple of chutes and I had my eye on one that involved some downclimbing to get to the snow. It was steep, scree covered and slippery. I was working my way down to the top of the chute when I managed to get the tip of my ski pole lodged into a crevice. At that moment I stumbled a little downwards causing the pole to bend like an bow. It suddenly released and smacked me in the nose so hard it nearly knocked me backwards. It was a real...
Sidnie here, Michael's wife. I want to ski that, too - and soon!
Chris,
Tell us about "bloody Wednesday" Sounds like you guys had a memorable time.

That's a bummer (about the weather....not about the models). Three of us headed out to Artist Point to celebrate the summer snowlstice as well. We took off after work at 4pm and were greeted by sunshine and broken clouds. We did two laps into Bagley Basin and the snow wasn’t bad even though it was fairly covered in pollen. There’s probably a good 5’ of snow still on top of the road that leads to Artist Point. Hopefully we’ll get easy turns deep into July. ...
This is pretty awesome! I read the cc.com post too.
My early May skiing this season in the North Cascades made me hungry for more. This report is motivation to quit my job.

^^ I second that. Your photos are always amazing!
Can't help it Lisa, I'm jealous that your parallel tele looks so much better than my fixed heel parallel. :'(Based upon what I saw on Wednesday, a lot of snow melted but I think it will still be good for this weekend and Denge peak looked really nice.
With the weather forcast being what it is, Sunrise still looks like a good bet for this weekend.

Chris, I know you are envious because you struggle to ski parallel in fixed heel ;) but really, poking fun at a tele chic.....hmmmm ::)
As usual, superb alluring photos and great choice for an introduction to the Cascades!
Great job on a beautiful pair of routes!
Ok, that's it. I want to ski with you guys.
She was just doing it in solidarity with her fixed heel friend. Pretty damn nice turns, though, for someone wearing tennis shoes with bungee cords for bindings.
Oh man, I wish that I could've been there. Mon or tues I could've gone, but not Wednesday. Way to kill it. I can't wait to see the pics.
So dan, how does the n cascades stack up to other places you've been?

Kumquat... hahaha.
Nice meeting and skiing with you Dan :)
Unfortunately my helmet cam footage didn't turn out (must not have connected all cables or something....) - hopefully you and Sky got some good pics.

... the snow is crappy though ;)
It's better before the middle of June.
(A little bit better, anyways!!)
the cascades are awsome mtns,,, taller than the rockies!! the snow is crappy though ;)
Yeah, but Tim, the weather never behaves. So many variables in the mountain weather.
I was anticipating a relaxing lunch on top and corn on the Wall on the way down. With no place to get out of the wind, I had a quick bite to eat and headed down in what seemed to be fresh snow on a carvable base. Sometimes you get lucky with conditions. When it's clear out, as it was on Wednesday, the views are extraordinary, although sometimes brief.
They say that is it a sign of insanity to repeat the same behavior and expect a different outcome.
About a month ago I skinned up the C-D on a sunny Tuesday following a snow storm on Sunday and a broken clouds Monday. I was hoping for pow on the Roman Wall and corn below. What I found was pebbled ice above the saddle, breakable crustd to the Grouse Chutes and sticky slime from there to the bottom.

Lisa, are those parallel turns you are making on tel gear. ::) you will be banned from the knee droppers club if you continue that. ;D Nice report , glad you had a great day.
We we up there on Saturday. I'm glad you made it. Check your PM's
That's awesome. Oh to be able to ski and then get a half day of work in....
Nice report Aaron and Doug. It was a fun day skiing with all these kids. Yeah Joe, I put you in that category. Our first descent was in Fear Factor and it was great to have Carol jump right in to become what I call "the skimmer". Skimmers are usually required during late spring/early summer tours when the slopes are a bit lumpy and have a bit of debris. The skimmer makes first tracks, smoothes the surface, identifies rocks and other debris and communicates the info to the more senio...
According to the lobsterman of Winter Harbor I "sailed all the way from Washington state" when I lived there for a time in the early 90's. So, you "sailed all the way from the state of Maine" to ski in June. Welcome to where the sun sets into the sea.
That was great fun and thanks for waiting for me. Next time I think it would be a good idea to do the west more open slopes first then work back to the east where the snow is more shaded by cliffs to avoid the afternoon "hissy fits". Here are some pictures

Temps start rising and the knee starts dropping. I guess the secret is out huh...
There are more pictures at my new Tips n' Tales weblog.
Thanks for posting the report and pics Aaron and Doug. I took some video on the cam...
