Nice report and photos. We climbed to the bergschrund on the south side route before heading down. We considered heading to the top, but headed back due to pretty firm conditions. I agree with Roger, the snow was about as good as it gets on Hood for July. TR forthcoming.....
Yes, you did ask us about the snow. We were kind of in a hurry to get out of the lot . . . can't imagine why. ;) Glad you had a great day too.
Nice job! We chatted in the parking lot at Cloud Cap. I was there with Dan (Hefeweisen), and we were on the Sunshine\Snowdome. TR to follow.
The ski conditions on Hood were beyond my July expectations.

One boarder and one skier? I think we saw you yesterday about 2PM at the Sunrise parking lot, but I could be wrong. The snow was really great down to Forest Lake yesterday. And the weather couldn't have been better. 8)
Nvy Blue Suburu. I think maybe you guys were the ones we asked about the snow? yeah, it was a grand couple days for sure! ...
Well done, Amar. Glad to see your persistence paid off.

Greg, I met you in the parking lot when you were on your way out and I was on my way in.
You said that the snow was already mushy. I hiked into 3rd Burroughs and had wonderful runs all day although it's a long way in. It wasn't mushy. No suncups or significant runnels. Just to let everyone know, if you are willing to do the hike in 3rd Burroughs will probably be good a week or 2 more.

Advice taken--skiied Dege today. Look for Ron J's or another party members later on, as I don't think I could justly describe it. 8)
Volcanogrl:
We started at the Lodge parking lot. My old age convinced my kid brain that the t4rek to Dege Peak was too tedious to justify the extra 500' of vert per run. However, the NE face of Dege looked tantalizing. Get it while it's still good!!!

P.S. - for photos of Lassen, do the Google search at this web-site.
We skied snowdome a week ago as well. Awesome conditions overall. The Eliiot creek washout is worth checking out -- pretty serious. Just stay on the south side of it and head up the talus of the Eliot glacier until you hit the snowfields. Stay climber's right and crevasse issues are minor. There is a crevasse near the top of snowdome that had a very thin covering of snow and gave me a moment of concern. My buddy was ahead of me and I was following in his...
Happy birthday, Greg.
May your greatest aspirations become the least of your accomplishments in the coming year.
Nice to hear the snow is holding up at Sunrise.

thanks Pin-head for the good beta! Volcanogrrl and I are headed up there bright and early tomorrow morning. What was the best time for snow conditions up there last weekend?
For snowdome, is any more technical gear needed - ie crampons, ice axe. . .

The dome is fine...return via Elliot and bliss will be had. Did it well last weekend. did not ski the Langalille bowls
snow line is pretty high....mostly above treeline...unless you've got the secret goods below the spur.
the spur looked good with one or so shots off the rim to lookers left. check the conditions report and there is a nice photo of: Mr. Dome, Sir Elliot and King Spur that will give you a good visual of the goods.
Pin!

I remember crossing that crevasse.
Andy Anderson's a nice ranger, eh? Hi Andy!
Glad you finally got it, Amar; I certainly agree that you should do it with better conditions. Tahoma Glacier should still be good now....

Try, Try Again, June 25-26, 2007:
Another weather window, another chance: after several inches of new snow fell above 5400 ft on Sunday June 24, the forecast for the following days looked good. Clearing on Monday afternoon, with 12000 ft freezing levels and light winds for Monday night into Tuesday, followed by increasing winds but continued fair weather on Wednesday. This time I'd do it right and try to pick the less windy day. I left town on Monday afternoon, after a qui...

Thanks everyone for your kind comments.
I became windy above 12500 ft, after about 10 AM, with an ever-increasing SW wind that reached 30+ mph by the time I reached the summit crater.

Note that although our ascent entailed several portages of a very short distance (i.e., like about from a resort base lodge to a lift corral), our descent was entirely portage-free . . . well, except for tromping over some vegetation for about a meter or so, for which GJ started to chastise me, at first because I thought he was concerned about the fragile alpine ecology, but then it turned out he was more...

Hey Cascadesfreak, looked like a fine spot you guys had on the Flats. Staying the night up there must've increased the fun-factor quite a bit. Nice tracks ya made and nice pics ya took!
Nice work Amar!! I'll buy you a beer next time the crew gets together. Congratulations!
Wow!! That sunset from Chinook is incredible, I think you should quit your day job and go pro.
The shots of Eric skiing were great, but the lake reflection at sunset takes ones breath away.

I guess I should have more properly said that the "ablation hollows" were disconcerting. I think I'd like to write a summer grant for more thoroughly expanding the breadth of research on this topic.

We were back at the car with cold beers waiting by 5pm. I've been noticing that cold beers waiting in the car is quickly becoming a vital part of ski-touring these days.
It's as vital as the skis. ;D
Congrats, Amar! Glad to hear you recovered so quickly from your weekend "ailment."
Hi Doogie!
It was really nice being in a snow storm on the first weekend of summer - and with great company. Weather is kinda getting in the way of climbing season, but the skiing is to die for 8)
Great TR.

Wow, those conditions look awful. Glad to hear you had fun! :)
Just got around to resizing/posting some photos from the Emmons/Interglacier.
Had to burn some vacation time to break away from work for a couple of weekdays for this trip, but it was defintely well worth it 8).

glad to hear after you mentioned this plan at the cravasse rescue field trip only days earlier.

Nice pics. Merk, my son and I rode/skied Dege on Saturday. It is a great line.

Hi all!
Yes, a great day indeed on some impressive lines.
Sorry about the photo troubles. I loaded them this second time directly to the TAY site and they're thumbnails... But that will have to do for now due to time constraints. We're in scramble mode to get things together to head back to Berlin on Saturday.

I'd go with approach shoes and leave the skins. I've done the traverse before and did not much enjoy it. I know some people prefer it, so maybe I just did not pick a good line. I did what I normally do and just headed down the drainage to the RTM trail and all was snow free. Enjoy!
Sounds like a great trip Buck!
Thanks for the heads up. Might have to leave the skins and bring some hiking shoes for the approach and exit?
After the SW chutes I normally do a lateral SE traverse at 7400 ft for about 1-2 miles back to the trail to exit.
Did you just down climb directly to the the RTM trail from the bottom of the SW chutes and walk out on a snow free trail?
Thanks for the info- great tour,
Joe

I was planning a more detailed report today, but this should suffice. Did the SW chutes yesterday -- awesome. Weekdays are great. No skinning bw CS and Lunch Counter -- I ended up packing the skis the whole way and the skins were dead weight. Very firm climbing even on S face so crampons were helpful. Though conditions likely will change, I recommend skiing off summit on far skiers left, which is somewhat east facing. Yesterday there was about five inches of s...
Good to hear the trail has "improved". Nice one.
Thanks Cem for the update.
That sounds pretty grim on the climb up with big suncups-gotta agree that a warmer day would be better suited.
I assume that the SW chutes would not be as suncupped due to their exposure.
Any others have recent reports?

A great day to be out for sure. I think we saw you atop Steamboat Prow from our campsite on the Emmons Flats.?..our campsite is visible in your second photo (lower-right portion of the photo). We didn't go for the summit, but enjoyed a nice run in the morning on the Emmons to climbers-right of The Corridor (the ski tracks visible near photo-center of your second photo). You, sir, are a genius. Why didn't that occur to me? Well done!
I did not have alt. as you said around 6600 or little bit more than that,
But it does not matter it covered with deep and large snow cup with sharp edges all the way Lunch counter. Not skiable
THIS YEAR THERE WILL NOT BE GOOD SKIING between SNOW LEVEL AND LUNCH COUNTER !!!!!!!!!!
This is my comment .( I hope not. )
On the other hand surface between false summit to lunch counter is very smooth.(but Saturday was icy , not enough sun and high temp)

I just read this and it makes me want to look at a map.
You can just come with us. I have no doubt you can ski steep chutes blindfolded.
Nice pic. of the turn, perpindicular to the fall-line!
That ascent looked pretty steep. Isn't there an easier route? Anyway, nice rpt.

Glad you were able to get out again Dave, and that there was still some snow on the pass for you.
The conditions sound a bit harsh, glad the injured climber got out OK. Was it caused from a fall and slide?
Approximately where does continual snow start on the trail above Cold Springs campground or past Timberline Campground?
I am assuming no snow or patches to about 6600 foot level on the trail?
How accurate is that? Can anyone clarify?
Thanks,
Joe
