Thanks JD. I've been converting the pics to black and white digitally. I think it adds some character to otherwise normal pics. Sherman Peak is definitely worth checking out. The peak gives you a great view of the crater and of the Boulder Glacier. Try to do it when there is still snow on the summit ridge to avoid the cement-like mud that sticks to your boots with a vengeance.
Here are a few pics to go with Sky’s TR:
We had the pleasure of climbing on some fantastic alpine ice for five short pitches as mentioned above. One of them is shown in the first picture.
The second is of Sky mastering the monkey trick as he descends the key gully on the ice cliff.
Finally, we broke free of trickery and enjoyed great turns on slopes and snow not requiring an ice tool to ski comfortably.

We were at Sunrise yesterday (7/8). Dege Peak looked pretty thin, so we didn't hike out there. Probably skiable (at least yesterday) but not for long. We found a few fingers to ski on the back of Sourdough ridge, but those might not last til next weekend. The slopes out on Burroughs look like they'll last a bit longer. But if I were hiking that far to get to snow, I'd probably just go to Paradise side.
Cool. I love the head of the Entiat.
Yah, good tour and a welcome change from scrubbing and bolting in the Icicle. ::) Great crew.
Chris, I still have your skins. Keeping up was fine but the gear shuffle was a switch after 6 weeks off skis. I wore sneakers/booted the whole climb.
There was lots of plant debris on the snow in places, but still very skiable. Hero snow for how steep it was.

Mark and Lucy,
Sidnie says thanks for the pictures, the good company and patching up her finger so well. Fortunately, she heals fast and should be ready for the North Cascades this weekend. We often get to Mammoth in the winter and would love to meet up with you and ski a volcano with a starbucks.

Nice work. I can relate to the pack shenanigans as well, though for me it's as often enthusiasm that's the culprit. Over the course of a week at Sorcerer Lodge this winter I must have been zipped up, goggled and waiting for others to ski down 5 or 6 times, before realizing that my skins were still on.
Great TR!
Great TR!
Nice job y'all! Looks like the Chutes are almost done. Much less snow than this time last year.
Mark and Lucy what a terrific Trip report on Telemark Tips. You've set the benchmark very high!
Hope to ski with you again next season. Maybe Shasta? :D
Chris, Team Orange! ;D

Great read. I can relate to the three donning and doffing of the pack.

Hey JD, sounds like a great trip. We went in to the N. side of Adams as well and can confirm it's "goneness." Here's a link to my TR on cc.com with some photos from the Adams Glacier.

continuous snow doesn't start until around 6200ft, about a 1/2 mile past the glacier basin campground...was able to access it via snowbridge that spans the creek, but that snowbridge probably won't last the week and then you'll have to hike a few hundred vf higher on the trail to the head of the valley to get on the snow.
ps- we did meet a volunteer ranger in glacier basin who was ranting about climbers caching sneakers in the rocks higher up in glacier basin and...
wowzers those pics look pretty awful....did you have to put up all 3 ?
was actually a lot of fun. climbed up soft snow and only a couple steps across glacier ice. and always fun to do a new route. the top half of the trip skied well from the new snow 2 weeks ago. beautiful seracs up top all white with a bit of new snow overnight.
glad it much went easier and quicker than we expected :)
dito thanks to sky and dave ~ your side steps down the day before made for nice step...

Wow, that's a nice huck. Sorry I missed bumping into the Silas crew, but somehow I didn't manage to leave the parking lot until after 4 ;D. The snow was still good at 6, even though it was starting to be in the shade.
I think I must have talked to Tomski in the parking lot this morning? The clouds kept the bumps a little firmer today (at least in the morning), but you can't complain about the approach.

Great TR Pete! How far did you have to hike, where does the snow start? We're hoping to ski Emmons-Winthrop next weekend.
Nice photos. I like the black and white work, did you take them that way, or convert digitally? I've got to climb Sherman next time I'm up there.
Stugie,
Thanks for the beta. I tried some of the easiest access snow patches today to the south of Frozen Lake, coming in from below via the old road from Sunrise to Sunrise camp and up Wonderland Trail, and on the flank of the Burroughs. The snow was great, the views were great, the sun was warm, 8) the runs last about 20 seconds but no need for skins or anything when you can just hand carry up for laps with short turnaround time. Nice photos, Mr. Freak, and nice choice of departure time. That is certainly way better coverage than normal mid-July. Silas called at some ungodly hour of morning Saturday, but I was not to be persuaded out of bed.
Sorry to have missed you (again) Tomski. Today I busied myself practicing getting wet in (and out of) my kayak in the currents at Deception Pass.
enjoy,

Heya Silas- I was also up there on the 7th and was pleasantly surprised to find such excellent early July snow coverage and buttery corn around Table Mtn/Bagley Lakes basin.
After a lazy start from Bellingham, I departed from Heather Meadows at the crack of noon, but still managed ~2,500 vf of skiing total on two separate steepish north-facing lines on opposite sides of Table Mountain. Suncups were abundant, but were soft enough to blast through easily on the descents. Nice to be...

Nice work; that Flett Headwall sure is a fun line. I should’ve looked a little closer at the Flett for fresh ski tracks on July 4th from our group’s distant viewpoint at Dege Peak. Kim- good to see you’re out enjoying the early summer corn!
Nice work Pete and Becky!!! That isn't a bad way to get it done. I like the leisurely pace sometimes, too. I got shut down on the Emmons last year due to weather...I am hoping to get my revenge next year. Hoping we can hook up for the NFNWR on Adams next year. Enjoy the summer!
Quite the coincidence, as Mammoth is a second home for me (ski-bum style). Living in Reno, I have a pass and I always ski to closing. I liked your rpt. and your 17 turns - to the rough bottom.
I finished North Pk. area June 8., suncups. If you read this --Lassen is holding, up the trail, down N side and boot back up!

Charles - "Goat Cirque" is a pretty good name. I saw a herd of 21 in there last summer. None this time though, but there were footprints on the glacier!
sounds like so much fun, don't know where to begin........ >:(......I'm like a dalmation tied to a leash at this school....its a given that I'm an Einstein on Biology because I attack science with the same untamed, untracked lines with the fall line as usual exploiting the most beneficial boundaries possible......but I'll be free soon......I'll be the fool skiin down on my tippy toes....hands holding a tray of pasta.....more like punching down Evander Holyfield (sp?)....

another awesome trek, you guys! keep up the great work!! ;D
Yo yo yo dudes and dudettes, this is my very first post so bear with me here but uhm, I just got done reading Allyson'sboi last trip report and then found this and uhm, I gotta git up there like real fast cuz I wanna drop in off that lip side-a-ways (backward and forward get too much attention) n bus...
Well that answers some questions for me. I got to Whitman Crest this morning at about 10:30am by climbing to Meany Crest from Summerland and saw all of your turns. I guess I should have checked here first. The Meany route doesn't offer a continuous ski anymore, it would require two short carries to ski down this way (one at Meany Crest, and another on the rocky ridge at the bottom of the bowl below it), although one could eek out a little more vert and ski almost to Fryingpan Creek on this...

Amazing, you are exploring the concept of skis as mountain descending tools. Never a dull week.
Tomski from Colorado (334 consecutive months) and I did this same trip yesterday (July 6) and found the same conditions. The slope right below Whitman Crest was the best, the large steep roll at the base of Fryingpan Glacier very good, and I started down Tony's route into that cirque ("Goat Cirque"??) but chickened out with all the rocks and cracks below and traversed right to a more open line (I was skiing with my joke boots, which don't inspire a lot of confidence on steep...
that kinda makes Dege look whimpy 8)....nice job!
Wow, love that pic of Sherman Peak from Grant Peak! (I knew the ridge there was exposed, but still, I get a bit nervous now zooming in on me at the very tippy top, about to execute a hop turn to begin my descent...)

nice report, Silas, and of course, excellent photos -- all eye-pleasing composition. thanks for sharing.
Thanks guys! It was a heck of a trip, and I finally got to see the summit crater in all of its glory! I'll post some photos in a bit.
On your first picture on the far right, there is a patch of rock on the left of the schrund. I was barely able to squeeze through there. I climbed the n ridge and skied the nw ridge.
The Lymans and Lava are a lot closer than the pinnacle (time wise) which took me several hours to return from where as the lymans or lava take maybe an hour or two since the terrain is so easy going. We've never even had to put skins on returning from any of those routes.

Thanks Jason, glad you made it out safely. Curious, did you climb and ski the NW ridge, or the N Face of the NW Ridge. I'm assuming the Face. We also looked at the NW Ridge but it had a big schrund problem unless you went lower and got on the scree. We also considered the Pinnacle HW and Lava or Lyman Gl. Lyman looked a bit far, and wasn't sure if enough snow on Lava. As you said, maybe earlier in the season next year.

Hey Chris,
This sounds like a great trip. Glad you got it in this season since you had been talking about it.
Also, thanks for the Sunrise Magnum Tour from a couple of weeks ago...super time. By the number of recent reports coming from Dege Peak it seems like the place to be in the "slack country" right now.
I bought some skates yesterday, so the training for the Haute Route spring 2008 begins!

An excellent weekend of day trips! Glad we lucked out on getting a well-timed break in the clouds/fog to allow us visibility for finding and skiing the Flett ‘headwall’.

Actually it was just me (unless you count the mice). I would've loved to have someone along, but everyone else had to work ???.
wow, sounds like a sporty couple of days you guys! glad you both made it out in one piece, avoided being pelted by rocks and enjoyed a nice ski down. way to go! ;)
Good call. I saw your tracks and they were very nice (can't beat the view below the glacier).
I spent the last three days up there. I skied the Pinnacle Glacier HW and found awesome snow, although dirty. This was a lot of fun. I skied the NW Ridge the next day (today) and it scared the hell out of me. My pons dropped off my pack (dumbass!) and I couldn't back off. I had to take it veryyyy slow and I eventually made it to the bottom.

SWEEEEEET is right! ;D Yes, the trip around Observation rock was just a hop, skip, and a slide through the scree to a sweet and supple line. Thanks for your patience and hangin' back for me. I'm feelin' charged up and ready for the next one!!!
nice job Matt! JP told me of your new set-up. howd it work out for you?
we spent the 4th on a leisurely boot to the top of Pan Dome then headed down North Face and Pea Garden for some 'in bounds' action and then later met up with JP and Dave in the lot for some snow-stashed beers. what great weather!

Hey Mark and Lucy,
Nice to hear from you. Meeting and skiing the chute with you guys was the highlight of the trip. ;D
Sorry to hear about your feet Mark and I hope they get better real soon. Lucy, I know Sid likewise enjoyed the chat on the way out.
Looking forward to seeing those pics and welcome to TAY, you are no longer lurkers. ;)

scotsman: Mark here at an internet cafe. Many thanks for your local's knowledge and letting us CA tele skiers join you down the SW chutes. The exit crosscountry route to the RTM trail worked out well. The cantaloupe in the parking lot was the perfect end to a great day. We got some nice pics of you and Sid in the chute, I'll upload them in a few days (need to get a cable which we left in CA). And meeting Sid and chatting on the walk out was a fine way to end our 4th of July ski.
