8,500 in Colorado? The season lasts very long. "Quality" may be a concern.
Let's face it, if you arrive in Colorado anytime other than Late July through September you should bring your skis, you should be able to find plenty of snow w/n a few hours drive.

Modified with some powder shots I cropped out - first Sean, then Wayne. Deep powder skiing.
Updated with some digital magic (where have you been all my life, digital camera?). My favorite sequence of the trip - look at the explosion of powder on that jump!
It's great when a week of pictures yeilds only a few choice ones 'cause it was snowing so hard all week!

Gee, thanks everybody! I'll see what comes out for this weeks TR. Off the menu probably. :)
Clem, the TAY terms of use would prevent me from mentioning the B&B by name as the proprietor is a good friend. But I will say that he's the same guy who runs the world famous Roslyn Trailbreaking Service upon which I have relied many times in the past, and his initials are JM. ;)

I've got friends in Woodland Park, CO - how long's the season tend to last at that elevation? When's best to drop in on them, skis in hand? :)
Thanks! It's the local stashes that sometimes make skiing fun!

Mack, that ridge to the east is the one we skied on the second lap. Met up with another group (mom & dad tele skiing, and at least one kid tele'ing really well!), and dad was familiar with that slope. We followed their lead avoiding a rollover off the top, and skiing down the east ridge edge, into the well-spaced trees (that drop down to the road). Nothing budged, no whumping. Same aspect as our pit, so that isn't surprising.

There seemed to be enough on the roads for sleds on Sunday. Actually if the rain melts it out just a few inches then I could probably drive far enough on road 27 to have some decent options.
Cheater! (I thought of that too. ;) )
Good info there; what did you think of the steep slope above your pit? We considered going along the ridge E of Big Rock to get there but it was more work and most of the party were not strong skiers or avy-savvy.
If you have the same weekend next year maybe we'll see ya!

I'm pretty sure Crystal yanked that old chair out (moved it to gold hills) because those slopes had trouble holding snow...Don't think it would be much different now-a-days?
What do you think about snow machine access up to some of the trailheads?
Your info about the Bullions Basin Chair is correct
Brent, Great to see that you're still touring. Sounds like a wonderful trip.
Sean! No, but I did go to college there. Makes me appreciate every day a little more.
No Robie, I was with Winter Raven...and yes, Jack, all natural releases from multiple starting zones into the same runout. I could understand the first slide triggering accompanying sympathetic releases, but those repeating at 5-10 minute intervals seemed odd. I lloked at the telemetry & the timing was just about as the temperature reached its daily high.
all natural releases? thats wild. i think i have only seen one large natural release ever.
You and Dorothea ? Glad your safe!
Larry,
A friend of mine that loves the outdoors has Raynauds syndrome and won't go snowcamping with me because of it. I've offered to carry extra batteries for his socks and gloves, but he's still not convinced it's a good idea. We would both appreciate hearing your experience. I've never met anyone besides him with Raynauds, let alone a fellow backcountry dude! What luck!
Was that Toltec wisdom John? Good stuff.

I was one of the two guys who skied up as you were starting to cut your column. We bailed into the mature trees and had a good run. We waited around for the pass to open before eventually taking another run around 2pm. The snow was quite nice and I was happy to hear that the people who skied the clearcut didn't have any trouble. The conditions seemed sketchy, but the runs in the trees were totally stable.
One more to the heap, Larry -- it would be a loss for the community if you stopped posting. I always enjoy your TRs and would actually love to hear more about all the little "systems" you have, as we've discussed some in the past. Don't let the difficult phase get you down (I've been feeling similarly, for what it's worth).
Great TR.

Thanks for the info. Any of you guys ever ski Davis Peak? It seems readily accessible from the snowpark. And, it looks like there are some fairly big/steep lines off of the SW aspect that's visible from the road.
Good2Go,

GoodtoGo, I have not skied Davis Peak. It looks like a good place to explore with an early start. I hear that snow park really fills up on weekends.
I thought I might mention that the terrain accessible via Rd 4315 (that to the east of the Salmon La Sac snow park) as well as the Howson Creek drainage off spur road 128 is a voluntary non-motorized area.
Unfortunately, as in past years, a few snomos are choosing not to respect the closure despite quite clear signage, but the more skiers that use this area the more weight the voluntary closures have.
I have not checked this, but it's possible that the area across Sa...

I agree with what everyone else has said about your TRs, Larry. In fact, I think I've told you the same kinds of things in person, but it's always good to get different (or at least more) viewpoints!
As far as the tone of things here, yes, we do seem to be going through one of those periodic "difficult" phases. But what would happen if you, and everyone else who, like you, wants to see this forum retain both its usefulness and civility, were to stop posting now? I...

Well, Joe, I got caught this week and had to figure this TR stuff out! So now I can add that you left out those spectacular cornice jumps! Thanks for showing us how it's done!
You got caught writting the TR because you didn't keep someone slower or less experienced by your side. Why do you suppose that Ron and Jeanette had me along? Always have a novi...
Sorry for posting this so late. Just thought I'd add that in the pit we dug at Kendall on Sunday at ~4000 feet our compression test column failed on isolation on the 5 foot slab as i cut the back with my snow saw. I assume the mid January crust was the one that I hit that triggered the release. It was enough to make us turn around, but apparently there were some safe enough turns to be had. Oh well.... We encountered the beacon-free snowshoers on our descent, and warned them about goin...
We actually skied to the 4962ft bump less than two miles east of the snow park on the north side of Salmon la Sac Creek.
Please keep your comments civil and constructive - that is the norm here.

Are you from Jersey or something?
Keep the reports coming, Larry. Your TRs are much more useful, entertaining, and thankfully non-judgemental compared with much of what I'm seeing lately on this forum. The wacky ultra-advanced equipment factor and the fabulous photos are a plus, too.
By the way, what's the name of the new B&B in Roslyn? I just might want to stay there someday.

Larry, those bunch of grumpys! Don't listen to them! I agree with John, this is what this site exists for. I always read your TRs first. Even if they are a week old. I can't wait to ski with you! Talk to you soon.
I had your same trip thoughts in mind, Zap, but couldn't muster up the strength to go. I think Mondays are going to be good days for solo folks who don't want to break a lot of trail, pretty much anywhere in the Snoq Pass backcountry with all the interest in the area these days. Thanks for posting.

Did you ski the face that's visible from the SlS lot (think it's the horse trailer lot in the summer)? We've been eyeballing that one lately. If so, how much vert/approach time involved?
Hi Good2Go and skierguitarist,
Maybe these TR's will help.

Great TR "Snoseeker".
How lucky can you get? You're afforded the unusual opportunities of:
1. learning "Geezer TR NotIt",
2. attending a MadDog apre' ski SuperBowl party with killer burgers & fries and,
3. you get to write your first TR on TAY!!
It can't get much better than that...

Mack, great to run into you up at High Camp this weekend - and yes, that sure was incredible snow we found! Cynthia and I dug a quick pit on a north-facing slope, probably about 35 degrees, and what we found was in the yellow zone – and therefore we minimized our risk by cautiously choosing our terrain. There was a layer of light snow from previous 2-3 days that was about 18" deep, and it slid off with a fairly light shovel tap. The next layer was buried down several more feet, and it took...
Crystal only charges for car parking in the upper lot closest to the ticket booth, and I believe only part of that upper parking is pay to park, if your in an RV you can get info from the wwebsite http://www.skicrystal.com/1711.html . We park in the "upper" C lot, used to be no one would ever park there, now on weekends its full of cars.

So when you folks park for this tour/ski, are you parking in the ski area lots or is there an official snow park for backcountry. Just wondering because I'm getting the idea that Crystal charges to park in their lot? I'd like to head up that way and ski that area (after 26 years!!!!!) but don't want to have to pay a ski area to park my rig.... Hopefully my Oregon snow-park pass is good up there ...but would step up to the plate if I had too by a Wa. one (even if...
Thanks for the location! I'll check it out in Becky's guide book...
Ah...so that was your group that had enjoyed Big Tree. I was wondering who could have tracked it out so bad. ;D
It was a fantastic day at Crystal! One thing nice about being a "geezer" ;), and not being able to keep up with those fast kids, it forces us to explore some of the closer options for days such as this. This option certainly paid off big time this past weekend with the massive amounts of new snow and high avalanche conditions. We yo-yoed several runs, and were able to find lots of first tracks t...

Surprisingly easy trailbreaking. Expected much more significant wallowing.
Snow consolidation had made trailbreaking less than the arduous work we had expected as well. A rutschblock test failed with one jump at 4600 on south aspect.
Great snow, we made numerous laps in boot and occasional knee deep fluff on the East side of the knob and retired to the car just as the Pass opened.

Way to go, we did not notice your tracks when we went by on the railroad grade. Long ago I did part of this and took a header much of the way. :D
Jolly Mtn is 19 miles due east of Snoqualmie Pass and 4-5 miles northeast of the north end of Cle Elum Lake.
i feel like i've seen these pictures before....oh wait, that was last month. does it ever stop snowing out there?? ;)
