Would you be able to do it Thursday or Friday?
Thanks BigRed - I think you just determined my route for the morning with the fracture report.
Agreed. Snoqualmie was great this weekend. A little snow saturday, clearing sunday, and sun on monday. We found many grin producing turns.
On Monday we saw a fracture line on the steep south facing slope far up the commonwealth drainage towards the kendall catwalk. Can't say when it went, because there wasn't much evidence of the debris. The crown was pretty large on the east side of a prow, but the rest was not too deep.

Thanks for the info. As always, once up there, there are numerous lines to choose from if certain aspects are in question.
everything a TR should be...thanks!
From similar aspects but slightly lower elevations yesterday (Melakwa Pass), I must say there may be some scary stiff slab atop that sucker. Just sayin', good to watch for it.
Sorry posted in wrong place. Please move or tell me how.
Thanks,
Dave

Helens. Started from Marble. Roads were covered by thin, aging ice. I did not put chains on. The snow sucks too right now, even low. Only go to MSH if you want to summit and not enjoy the skiing (avy risk and all else aside)
LeeLau~
I suppose I should have looked you up last weekend. Loom said "PM LeeL, for local beta". now I kick my self for riding lifts all day. Great tour, perhaps i can get there later in the year.

I have gotta get a GPS and learn how to do all of that, wow! That is really illustrative and was quite clear.
Thanks for sharing!

I went to Crater lake for the first time this past summer and was in awe of the natural beauty. I could not help but think about all of the slopes begging to be skied. I am glad you have done so and you have also inspired me to make sure and plan a trip there next winter.
Thanks for sharing and the pics were great!

Make sure and show those Canucks how us Washingtonians rip it! See you when you get back.

Looks like an amazing time! I am hoping to make it out to the Alps before global warming really takes over and there is no snowpack to speak of. Looks like you had great bluebird days and decent snow- hey, can't ask for more. The PNW has had a few days of sunshine as well and some areas look an awful lot like the alps ( but on a smaller scale). Have fun out there and come back home to our great snowpack.

So true ;D ... there must have been at least 6” fresh pow up in Source Lake area on Sunday. Partly sunny all afternoon, got a late start and stayed low, snow in around tree clearings on South aspects remained nice (dry pow) all day!
It was indeed nice up there. I sent the new snow sloughing on a steeper rollover but it didn't really travel far or propogate and the rest seemed reasonably stable. It looked as though what was going to slide had already on the really steep sections.
MSH = Mount St. Helens? Where did you start from & how were the roads?
Thanks ,
Next time I will plan longer trip and try to ski many hills around lake and at mount Scott.

Looks beautiful! Glad to hear it went well.
Great trip and fabulous images! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Joe. The Sarvant Gl and bowls were huge, but blew our minds when we came over the saddle and looked across to Cowlitz Divide and down into Ohanapecosh. Place goes on and on :). We're suffering from "exponentiality"; every trip leads to views of several new ones to be done.
Once again Boot that is a heck of a day of touring.
Pretty impressive haul for the amount of daylight available this time of year.
That must have been impressive to look down, from the top of that ridge down the valley.
Good job,
Joe

It looked a bit thin, but doable, that day. I ran into two guys that just had come down it and they said that it wasn't a problem for them at all.
Nice powder steez, Holly! Sorry I missed it.
There are a number of places to take avy classes. I took the Gary Brill level one and was quite pleased. Gary is very knowledgeable and is also member on TAY

There are also a number of other places to check out. It is a matter of taste for the instructor and time.

Good details. See my TR from yesterday.
I'm also interested in the Olys, esp. sking the peaks I can see from my house on Hood Canal.
I want to get in to ski Townsend but the road access is very variable (see a road access report I'll post, second-hand from a friend who went Tue. 1/15).
Anyone know of accessible snow other than Hurricane Ridge?

Nice! I've got some good video to string together as well...
Didn't take many pics, but got a couple nice ones of you. Really nice terrain back there and the snow surprised me with its quality. Of course, my expectations weren't that high, which is a nice way to go into a day like this.

Found similar conditions up near the Pass. Light East wind was streaming over our N-S ridge at ~10-15 mph at 2PM. Lapping wasn't an option for us, but I wish (from the bottom of my soul) it had been. Minimal to no instability noted, despite the antics of a number of folks in other parties.
A decidedly non-textbook Rutschblock (small, weighted more in a shearing than weighting action by the skier) failed in a Q2-3 fashion with a little pop ~6-8" at a moderate hop below Monda...

Thanks for the TR Nick. Was the bottom/exit of the Crooked Couloir filled in?
Chris,
Con't worry, there will be freshies when you return. In the meantime be careful, eh.

I didn't have a ski buddy so I just took scenic pix of the views and the ski slopes.
If you are looking for a ski buddy on Fridays--I'm often available every other . . .
PM me if you like.
If you ever want to trade secret or semi secret stashes give me a shout.
I'm in Portland and mostly ski around Hood.

If you're gonna forget your skins, Chris, you should do it in July so you can boot it like I did on Unicorn last summer. ::)
Nice TR Nick! Let me know if you want to make some turns sunday or monday
We went out one ridge west of that first cirque. We didnt like the way the normal route looked, so we opted to explore that other side. There was a little boot packing involved, but mainly to stay out of the way of some steep, quite loaded aspects.
Oh and I forgot to add that sun exposed slopes were baking like potatoes up there when we headed down around noon. Pinwheels spontaneously rolling past you, that sort of thing, so factor that in any equations you have.
Sounds awesome Scotsman. Can't wait to see some pics.
I have to admit that the reason we where unable to ski Cats due to latness of the day was I had left my skins at the house and had to go back to town to get them ( 1.5 hrs return) before we started the tour. My Canadian partners where very patient with me but soon everybody knew what a goof I was. Last night everybody I met said, " are you the American who forgot his skins?.
I will try and do better in the future and be a better TAY ambassador. :-[

We saw your tracks at the bottom - which way did you go out?
Because I lived out of state for a few years, yesterday was the first time I have been in Pineapple Basin in at least three years. Well, I had this same thought yesterday, that the bowl below the Tooth used to seem big, but yesterday felt so small. Funny how our perspectives change with time.
